I was considering using Karaoke Loop so my singers could use their mobile devices to view my songbooks including updates between printing but DARN!, the cost per month based on the shows I listed was almost going to exceed the reprinting cost of 1 book per month. Are there any options out there that won't break the bank? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I've been working with it for a few months now. Some of the people use it. Haven't seen a huge response though, most still want a book or bring in their laptop/netbook to look up the songs online. Most of these services cost like $25-40 per month.

Mickey has a nice little search that I believe is web phone capable with a killer search.

Here is another I haven't tried yet, but also supposedly free.
http://mycornerbar.net/ but i'd still look at Mickeys first.

Thanks Lon, I don't want to replace the books but with printing cost is starting to bite. I am just looking for another way to update all new added songes more often.

I use best value copy. Just send them a pdf of my songlist and they do the rest.

I was wondering the same thing Lonman...

I just sent an updated songlist to KaraokeLoop...

I have about a dozen people checking in and using the list to mark favorites. They all want the ability to actually sign up using KaraokeLoop.

I'm going to start beta testing a product that does just that - as a favor to the creator. I'm still not sure if I want people send me requests via the computer instead of having the customer interaction that I prefer.

You know, I thought about that. I still get the interaction though. Usually when I explain how to connect with their smartphone and then again when they are on the stage.

As far as the kiosk goes, there is less interaction, but the whole process is more efficient. I am not at the computer/mixer every minute of every show and when I used slips, I used to return to find them tossed onto my keyboard or randomly onto the table or set on the sub or worse yet... placed in the discard pile where I didn't notice them. That doesn't happen anymore, and... bonus - I don't have to try to decipher drunk hand-writing or deal with song requests for tracks not in my list.

You gotta watch out for those technophobes though. "Whaddya mean I gotta type my name and make a password? I don't care if 20 other people are signed up, I just can't bring myself to use a computer!" I usually tell them to find a friend to do it for them, or if they are polite about it, I'll guide them through the process. I get interaction that way and also as a result, I get feedback from people who are impressed with the system.

I have been a bit stalled on my book, as far as making it work well with smart phones, but I will soon have some time to work on it. It does fairly well on a fast network, where your phone is connected to WiFi.

I am a big believer in speed, and one of the problems with a large song book is speed loading the queries. I am working on an Ajax approach that I hope will work well even for phones in 3G mode (not connected to wireless).

I already have an emailed song request approach available.

Having the songs go directly to CompuHost or Hoster is probably more than could be done without cooperation with them. CompuHost has their own kiosk. Neither they nor MTU are cooperative about sharing information that would allow one to do that.

Rumbolt: Part of the reason that the price is high is because we only allow a certain number of shows to be "Featured" within our network (Featured shows appear at the top of all searches). If the price was too low, it would be difficult to ensure any degree of exclusivity.

We're getting ready to roll out a lower cost option for KJs who want the songbook functionality but aren't as concerned about putting their shows at the top of all queries. It will likely cary a flat yearly fee that will be affordable for nearly any KJ. I'll let ya know when it's ready.

Alright I signed up and went for the upgrade. Issue came up when loading the songbook. Only my titles came up in both the artist and title columns. Is there a bug in the system. Both the artist and the title are in the csv file. Does it matter which is first?
It also lists a little more than 500 less songs than what I have. My show computer lists 6120 songs in my collection while Karaoke Loop only lists 5624.

When you get to the upload page it will ask you which columns are for what. So for yours it looks like Title will need to be marked column 2 & Artist column 1.

I'm still a huge fan of Kjams Pro. I DO have a songbook that I update with new music but, my primary source for singers are laptops, smart phones, ipads etc. I really never have to print anything (but I do for those who demand a book) because my library is automatically updated through the system. Works great

I've started using c.staley's kiosk again. I wasn't it using due to my previous kiosk machine biting the big one and had to wait for a replacement to come in. It finally arrived last week and I finally got it up and running for my last two shows. Works great and there are definitely many benefits.
They are, so far:
-No more high book printing costs (I'll only print 1 of each book from now on, artist and title)
-No more carrying and distributing said books, which means that the search for the missing books at the end of the night are over.
-No more printing slips (Saves on toner and paper) which means no more wasted slips because the drunks can't be bothered to pick them out of the beer spilled on the table or pick them up off the floor.
-No more misplaced slips. Although I have never once missed a slip, as someone pointed out, people tend to toss filled in slips any old place and sometimes even in the discard pile, forcing you to be on the look out at all times.
-Song list is ALWAYS current
-No more slips filled out with songs I don't have because they didn't bother to check the book
-No more drunken writing to decipher
-No more having to ask the person who put in "X song" to come see me because I have more than one James or Sally. The kiosk can force the user to enter a last initial.
-No more having to argue with people that I may or may not be able to get their song in because time is running short. The Kiosk can be set to automatically give that warning.
-I have had feedback that the customers LOVE that I'm "keeping up with the times" and I've "gone techno" and I'm more advanced than any of the other shows around. It impresses them and shows them that I care about improving my business.

And last but not least (and by far in my opinion), the best benefit:

-No more arguing with the drunks who beg you just to squeeze them in for one more song. The kiosk can be set to tell people that you are out of time and not taking any more requests.

What are they going to do? Argue with the computer? Many are too drunk to figure out that I'm the one who controls it and all they would have to do is walk over and argue with me, but instead, they just don't! LOL I LOVE it!

As for the kiosk reducing my interaction with the customers, it actually improves it! I can now take the time to interact in a pleasant manner with them and it's a little more like visiting, instead of having to ask them what it is they wrote, explain to them that yes, it REALLY IS possible that there IS more than one Sally in the room ("But they aren't singing right now" - And how on earth do you know they haven't put in a song already and just haven't sung it yet? You just got here, for Pete's sake! Arrg!), arguing with them and having to explain why I need to go home and get sleep at the end of the night and that since I've already gone 20 minutes overtime on MY time (not getting paid), then no, one more song is not on the agenda (See above re: arguing).
It just makes life more pleasant all around.
I've yet to see a negative, other than one, and it's easily taken care of.
I had a customer the first night I had the kiosk back in operation who wanted to play "roulette". That's what one of each book is for, and also for those (like myself) who like to just browse.
Those who are technophobes can have a friend help them or I can come and show them how it's done. In such a case, there's more POSITIVE interaction with the custies.
It's a win - win for everyone.

I've often thought about the phone enabled thing, but I'm really not sure it would be worth it for me right now. Many of my customers do have capable phones, but I'm not really sure the phone owners are capable of grasping the concept. Some are for sure, but 2 or 3 in a night just doesn't make the expense worth it at this point. Maybe in another year or two...

Thanks diafel! (geez, I feel like I should mail you a check....)

Let us know how often you have those long lines of angry singers waiting for the slow drunk guy to finish browsing....

all you guys really have me thinking about putting out a kiosk to test the waters. i'm assuming all kiosk software is not dependent on a particular hosting program

Not all. Super Remote Tool by tricerasoft is truly a standalone kiosk software. Meaning that it does not rely solely on another program's database to generate a list. It can create it's own database from the files on your computer.
