I just put mine on a table. Thinking of buying a laptop table for places I can't use a regular table.

I don't think that submitting requests via iPhone is a good idea. Wouldn't you get a lot of spam. Four hundred song requests and an empty bar. Maybe an ad hock application but nothing internet based.

I can set mine so you need a password to send the request which means they have to set up a profile on the main kiosk to use it. and they have to get the IP address as well.

I did agree with Farmer. And I still kinda do. I'm a technology lover through and through, but I HATE what society is doing with it. The disadvantage would be that you can't keep your eyes on every smartphone in the bar, right? Does it show you a specific number to each phone or user, maybe? I'm just thinking about the situation where guy 1 gets the password and IP and whatnot, and sends it to many of his friends. They then all send in multiple ( fake ) names or something silly like that. Is there ways around that kind of thing?

The kiosk I have seen used requires people to stand in the host's veiw so the host can see if the correct name is being given or not. It's actually worked already. I had watched a group try using different names, and it didn't work. The host knew, and deleted them like the note on the kiosk had said. The group was then outside having a cigarette and complaining about it. ( I just chuckled at them ).

Unless these fake names already have profiles it would do them no good.

Oh, so you have to set up a profile per name? Okay. That sounds solid. I just worry about the hassles, you know?

I use a bunch of stuff now to keep folks in line.

-We charge for singing, so there's always the financial penalty for screwing around. $1 per "credit" now. We use RFID Keyfobs similar to these. It's $2 for the fob ($1 worth of credits, can add more later)
Image

-Singers have to take a picture of themselves via the webcam during registration. This is projected on the wall with the playlist. If we see the same face on 2 accounts, it gets deleted. Other singers love to snitch out the cheats.

-Singers also have to input a 4 digit pincode to their account. Optional, they can register their phone number to use the mobile app.

We used to sell out (no more requests) by 10:30, but since the changes this has stretched out to midnight. We're no less crowded, but the amount of cheating has gone down significantly enough where we can still entertain latecomers (I love our "restaurant" crowd that comes in late)

-The kiosk is also connected to an online store. Customers can purchase new songs on the spot with their credits. The system buys the song with the venue/kj credit card and adds it to the library automatically.

-Customers have complete control over their songs. They can change them, change the order, bribe songs up, change pitch, or delete songs.

Right now everything is just sitting on a desk, (dell gx280's and elo touch screens) but I'd like to switch over to these all in one ELO units.

I bought the compuhost kiosk add on tonight. I already have a nice looking stand on wheels that lock that I will modify and place my back up to my back up laptop on. I don't have another karaoke show for a week and a half. I will have my kiosk going before I have my cdg player going!

Once I get the stand finished, I will show pics of it. I bought it a few months ago at work as a 2nd. It cost me $1.

I just did it too -- got a touch screen off EBay and a laptop that has no screen. I will try the CH kiosk on it, but eventually I want to get mine going with touch as well as keys.

This is what I use for the Kiosk. It's an MSI All-In-One Touchscreen. Setup time is 30 seconds each.

I will eventually go touch screen but for now the only cost in my system is $1 plus the $99 for the program.

On another note, after I bought it, I tried using the server laptop to connect to my show laptop but couldn't get it to work. It worked when I used my home pc as the server. The wireless router on my home pc allows all laptops to get the 'net. Apparently they can't hook to each other that way? I know I need to get one for shows but I wanted to try it this way.

Anyone?

I made mine out of a two wheeled cart. I also have a couple "desktop" models that are simply velcroed to a desk stand and attached to a laptop.

Almost all lcd touchscreen monitors have VESA compliant mounting holes in the back. You can easily get a template.

Wish I could just use a laptop that is touchscreen! Get rid of the heavy bulky pc. THink Mcky is on the right track. Anyway, I without a doubt have the best looking stand! Should have it finished tomorrow, if not then Tuesday as I have a couple gigs this weekend. Once finished, I'll post pics.

Ripman... check out Panasonic Toughbooks (C-28 or 29 model).

I found about a half dozen on eBay for average of $75 each.

These are shock mounted HDD, magnesium cases, waterproof keyboards & touch screen!

If you look on my website in the photos galleries, you'll see several pictures of it in action.

I used to use two, but one suffices. I also print 6 spiral bound books by artist for browsing at my shows.

I should mention that I use CH and their Remote Request Server/Kiosk.

I also use a CF-29. Great little rig, and you don't even really need a case for it if you don't want to have one. It's its own case! I do use a case just to carry the wireless router and the power cable, but I really don't need one. I could carry that stuff in my main rig box. I just like to keep all the same stuff together in one place, but that's just me.
Highly recommend the Toughbook. Well spent money as far as I'm concerned.
I use c.staley's standalone kiosk. It's not dependent on any other hosting program and can even be used for a disc based host without another computer. You would just hook up a Dymo printer to the kiosk machine and have it print the slips for the singers to bring to you. Easy-peasy!

I can certainly see the advantage of a kiosks, but one that only prints slips? The way I see it, that's like buying a new car and only using the ashtray. If you're going to use technology... use it.

Not at all. It's more like buying a Maserati and never going over the posted speed limit. Not as efficient and exciting as it could be, but still a great ride nevertheless.

There are still several advantages to using a kiosk without a host machine:

- No more book printing. ($savings!)
- Song updates are a snap, practically instant. (time savings!)
- Song data base is always up to date.
- Song requests are ALWAYS legible. (No more deciphering drunkenese)
- Kiosk can give warning to the singer that they may not get their song in due to time restraints. (no more whining about not getting their song in due to time - they are told by the machine right off the top)
- Kiosk can be locked out and stop taking requests when there is no more time for singers. (no more arguing with the drunken jerk who insists that you do have more time)
Those are just a few of the advantages.
The savings in book printings alone still make it well worth it.

Wouldn't be a savings for my situation. I know customers who like to sit & peruse through the books looking for new songs - yes they do tell me they like books, the shows down the street don't have books at all, you just tell the kj. I know of no one running a kiosk around this area, so cannot make a comment on that. I am one of these people who like to sit at a table & look at the books as well. As long as it's something I personally would like to see at another kj's show, I want to offer it at my show so books will never go by the wayside at my show, however a kiosk will become a part of the system for those who want to use it.
