Charge $1 @ song, then every singer is a "paying" customer.

I don't care what a person is drinking as long as they are spending - which is the point of the bar hiring entertainment in the first place, to bring in spenders - if the bar doesn't make money, they will not continue the service for the customer. Someone drinking a couple sodas an hour is fine with me or ordering food. No one is required to drink alcohol in any manner to sing at our show. The bar should be charging for every glass (soda/coffee/WATER) as well, no free refills - this is a downfall I hear many complain about.

No I would not take 1.00 a song for my pay, that would be 50-60 bucks for a 4 hour gig, but I won't cut off the water/soda drinker either. Not my job. If the bar wants to do that I'll let them make the call and inform the person, but in 22 years I think I've only had the situation once or twice. Usually the peroson not spending money on themselves will buy for someone else, is the DD, or is at least with a group dropping money and I wouldn't think of insulting the 1 non drinker to lose the other 5 to 10. (bad business)

Okay, here's a solution that should make everyone happy: #1: Get a roll of cheap ride tickets... or several.. different colors for different nights.
#2: The servers hand a ticket to every person that buys a "qualifying" drink. Beer, mixed, pop, whatever they want to set as qualifying.
#3: You don't get a microphone handed to you without a ticket going to the KJ.
Now the KJ isn't the police anymore and either is the club. Every song sung has had a drink attached to it. Are they "transferable?"... you bet.

I'm sure the servers and bartenders will be estatic handing out tickets.

Did that at a bar I used to work at. It went bye bye after a week because the bartender kept forgetting to give the ticket and I got tired of enforcing and telling the singers to get a ticket from the bartender. Bartenders are lazy and won't do things unless you remind them.

We were at a place that tried that except for it was for a drawing. It didn't work for the bartenders with trays as the tickets would get soggy and it was awkward. One tried pretearing them and keeping them on the tray in a shot glass but still didn't have enough hands to serve the drinks, keep hold of the money and hand out tickets. If they kept them by the cash register then they would have to make a seperate trip back and they would get interrupted and forget. They were actually working their tails off and that was just one thing too many.

Agree with folks who said "not my job to police".
I'll add -- bar owners who don't offer food for the soda drinkers and bottled water at a nice markup for the water sippers in the crowd are missing out on potential profits.
I have no idea why so many owners are so short sighted as to want to cater strictly to heavy drinkers who will tear up their bars, drive women and other desirable customers away and are eventually going to be in a fatal accident while drunk from their bar and cause the bar to eventually end up being named in a big lawsuit. How's that a win for the bar?

How's that a win for the bar? Because they are not being sued everyday.... they want to make as much as they can... while they can. Ask a car manufacturer why they don't recall every little mistake they make when building a car that they know of. They will tell you that it's more expensive to recall all the cars and fix them then it is to pay off the families of a few people that get killed in accidents caused by the faulty equipment. It's all about percentages vs profits.

It's all about percentages vs profits. Yes, this is true. Dram shop lawsuits are rare. Most bars are more sensitive to pressure on their liquor license. That's about all that stops some from being openly hostile to non-drinkers.

I'll rephrase my point.
You may make more in the short run off the alcoholics, but who do you think makes more in the long run?
The bar with 10 regular drunks who drive everyone else away and tear the place up?
Or the place where guys can actually meet women or take a date?
