To each his own, I would never charge for "downtime". Like I said, I set up well in advance anyway. I want a perfect attendance record, both for showing up and showing up on time. Setting up at the last minute is just asking for disaster sooner or later. Of course, that is just my opinion.

There's a difference between arriving early enough to set up and ensure things are okay and downtime or standby. If they want me to be there for X number of hours then I will charge accordingly whether I am playing or sitting on my duff. How many of you would scream bloody murder if your employer sent you to a job at 8:00am but the actual work didn't start until 12:00pm and finished at 4:00pm. and they only paid you for 4 hours work? This is no different.

This is no different. Well first of all, my packages are for 6 hours. If during that 6 hours, they want me to stop playing for awhile (like Saturday night at a class reunion when they wanted a guy to play the grand piano for 45 minutes) it doesn't bother me. I'm paid for that time period regardless. So 6 hours is 6 hours. When do I start, when do I finish? Start at 3, finish at 10? Well that's one hour OT. Explained very well in my packages. Not downtime, OT. But call it what you want. What? You want to show an hour long video with audio right in the middle? It's your party, hours have already been established. I'm still there for only 6 hours, no charge.

I think what the original quote was he was told to be there at 6 but then told not to start till 8.
Yep I'd charge for the time I stood around either that or leave and come back at 8

Why stand around?.... You're going to set up anyway right? (right.)
So, set up, check everything out and then leave.... come back at 7:45 if you like, but go do whatever you want to do in the meantime... The client isn't forcing you to stay in case there is a "microphone emergency."
