It does read KMA files now, I just need it to read the KMH files before I can use it.

I was referring to the KMH files when I said the other hoster formats. I just didn't remember what it was called.

It doesn't have to read either one. Your software has a standard access database in it (songs.mdb). ALL the information needed to create a kiosk database is there. I'm sure the singer history is kept the same way...

Just dump the contents of the databases and read that. No need to scrounge around the disc looking for (and decoding) .kma or kmh files.

Last night was the first real test for my new Compuhost Karaoke Kiosk. Last week was mostly DJ for a class reunion.

Now let me add the drawbacks, kinda.

Not everybody is computer literate. It was a slow start and I had 3 persons in the room at the beginning. One is slightly challenged (slow) but he was able to figure it out on his own. The next was an elderly man who barely knew how to use a mouse. With a little help, he was able to do it and although he just did it to try it out, I convinced him to sing since there was hardly anyone in the room. He did a duet and started low but by the middle of the song he actually sung into the mic and had a great time and shook my hand for the experience.

That's ok, and once the room began to fill up, very little experience with the kiosk which I was able to place right in front of my booth (me on the 1 foot tall stage as well as the kiosk but them one foot below) but the slow guy actually helped some thru.

I had one guy who's been to my shows before, very outward, singing ability so so who couldn't read the letters (get some glasses, seriously!). He had to have help, by the end of the night he had 3 different alias. I talked him thru that, combined his songs, but every time he wanted to enter a song, he had to have help. Other times I would allow him to just come up and request a song.

So, multiple aliases. Just have to keep an eye on that during the show, but it will mess up the history a little bit.

Other than that, went off without a hitch, my books can take a hike! I will keep one with me for browsing.

Ripman,
Are you using a touchscreen or just a regular screen and letting them use a mouse, or are they using the keyboard?

Biggest problem I had with the touchscreen was a girl with long nails who kept touching the "key" above the one she intended to hit.

Also, I recommended to people that they use a two-letter password so they had less to type.

You guys are using keyboards? A mistake IMHO. Registered singers are either those who have given me a slip, asked me to put in their name, or are regulars. Just a suggestion.

Usually, the ones with long nails here will curl their finger and use the second joint instead of the fingertip.

I'm using a laptop with a mouse. It used to be my back up so it cost me nothing for this venture. May go touch screen, only if I can get a super deal and I don't want to haul a tower pc around.

I tell them to use a very simple password, even one character, something they will absolutely not forget.

Farmer, I don't get what you are saying?

Does your laptop have a serial port? How about an open usb port? You can use any touchscreen with your laptop.

#1. If you have a serial port open, most of the older touchscreens are serial, just get a cable and you'll connect the serial cable and the vga cable to your laptop.

#2. If you don't have any serial ports, but you do have a USB port, you can buy an adapter that will convert usb to serial and you're still in business.

You simply need the screen and to hook up 3 cables: the power cord for the screen, the vga cord and the serial/usb cable and you're ready to go. (you'll need driver software for the touchscreen, but that's abundant, free and very tiny so it won't interfere with anything.

I have 2 of them I use for tabletop models and one is an old win '98 Compaq Armada laptop with a serial port and the other is win XP with a usb port and a dead keyboard. I used a usb keyboard to load and configure the kiosk software and then leave the keyboard at home.

Unfortunately that is not an option for me.

Someday it probably will be ;)

My worry would be theft on that one.
That, and being in Canada, I have yet to find one that is that low in price.

Sounds like a great opportunity for someone to create a Droid/iPhone app. Connect to the KJ's network and everyone could pick their song from the comfort of their own bar stool. Too bad I'm not smart enough to write the software for it.

It already exists for smart phones. I use karaokeloop.com right now for my shows & one online book source. There are a couple others and one I may start beta testing shortly that will send requests from the phone to the host as well.

$40. But if the other one works well, i'll get that one for free for being the first user and will drop the other.

The Compohost Karaoke Kiosk does that. I haven't set it up yet but it does have the feature.

So does the Tricerasoft kiosk, but it is limited to android or IPhone.

I have about a half-dozen regular users of the smart-phone capability. I have had quite a few more one-time users of the system. That's because of the tourist trade in my market.

Any phone that can connect to a wi-fi network or hotspot can interact with CompuHost's kiosk as long as you can enter the IP address in a browser. That includes phones other than iPhones or Android based phones such as BlackBerry and Windows smart-phones.

I set my system up so any web address goes to the kiosk. (I tell them go to k.com). This was done with a Windows-based DHCP/DNS server called DualServer, and setting it up so it gives all .com addresses the address of the kiosk.
