Only oportunistic, profit centered, manipulative individuals seek to earn a living selling a controlled substance. They would fail miserably any standardized test for conformity to a 9 to 5 routine. I would not classify the Tavern keepers trade a mainstream societal endeavor. A hard charging, agressive, risk taking, type "A" personality is what it takes to be in the business. Most will rationalize, justify, minimize, intelectualize, all of their decision making belief system. A powerfull Ego prevents taking responsibility for any apparent shortcoming. Blame is always couched on others. A well honed, carefuly thought out argument that defys logic usually wins the day for most of them. When you enter into any kind of service for hire agreement with them, it would be wise to remember, "You knew it was a snake before you picked it up".........Cheers!:) ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; I gotta disagree to a point. Lord knows I have had my share of troubles with owners and I would agree that those particular ones fit the mold you described. However,,,,I've seen some in the past (well before I got into the business) who had one thing going for them only, and it was enough to make their business venture successful. They had people skills. Said hi to everyone, remembered their name, ALWAYS had a smile for ALL customers. Blah blah blah, yada yada!

I used a pretty broad brush to paint a picture of Bar Owners. I admit, maybe a bit too broad. Certain occupations attract certain personalities. There are some really nice, easy going, fair minded persons that own and operate drinking establishments. Nevertheless, they are not the norm. They are wise enough to recognize the power of a "Charismatic" management style and understand that reason and fairness must prevail.

I'd like to highly recommend the "Bar Rescue" show on the Spike network -- for me it's been extremely educational to watch it. Check it out and you may just have a good idea or two on how to improve business for your owners... If nothing else you'll be pretty entertained watching some of these characters and how the show experts deal with them.

I find it comical that some owners do not take their own businesses seriously enough to even be bothered with the day to day events of their bar. Some owners believe that having a karaoke night, band, magician, etc, is the cure all for success. It takes a lot of hard work. Some don't have any advertising at all and wonder why business is slow. Then they blame the entertainment or the staff for having low sales and a small body count. It's just mind boggling to say the least. I have one "boss" that fits this criteria to a fault. He has NEVER been to one of my karaoke shows. In fact we have only spoken twice,,,, the first time was our initial contact, and the other time is when he called me 3 hours in advance to tell me they are having a karaoke contest and that I should take charge,,, Well, gotta tell ya, that didn't go over well at all.
To the owners of ALL service industries...... Take some pride in ownership and get involved!!!

As a guy who has been associated with the bar business for close to 4 decades as a bartender, manager, AND an owner, I give a HUGE second to the above. Of course, it's mostly common sense mixed with decent business acumen ( think Dr. {obvious} Phil for bars), but you would be surprised how many owners simply don't have a clue.
