Got to think Chartbusters was pretty smart for locating their business in Nashville -- full of aspiring professionals and good studio musicians and when they aren't making karaoke they can rent their studio out. Surprised Sound Choice hasn't considered doing the same, if not in Nashville perhaps in NYC or Los Angeles...

Chartbuster's studios are located in Seymour, TN (Big Mama's Studios). I have been to their facilities several times. Nashville, LA and NY are all much more expensive to record in than Charlotte, NC or Seymour, TN. The ex-SC studios (Satellite Recording Studios) just landed a large 100 song production contract with one reason being that they came in about 40% less than LA producers.

Studio rental does not need to be overly expensive (<100$) hour. Yes top studios are far more than that but the extra value from going totally top of the line is probably not needed for karaoke.

The main cost of the studio is the techs who will be running all the mixing etc. It probably would cost far more for SC to have their own techs and studio than the cost of renting a studio if it is only for 1-2 disks a month.

You are correct Dr. Fred. As MtnKaraoke noted, all the basic "ingredients" (equipment, facilities, engineers, local musicians, etc. ) are still in place and available, just not the fixed overhead we used to have. With most recording these days being "direct to digital", the influence of the ambient conditions (i.e., the physical room) are much less than they used to be. So the actual cost of doing the music production with "hungry" musicians and new studio owners (who will produce for us at a discount) are actually less than when it was all staff employees. What hasn't really changed are the publishing royalty fees and hassles as was also noted by another poster. Given the excessive level of piracy (both Chartbuster and Stellar Records ARE struggling) we have elected to take a more aggressive Asset Recovery strategy than these two companies and are putting more efforts into that area than recording new music.

We are in communication with the publishers in trying to discuss more cost effective methods of delivering content (for example LEGAL downloads for commercial purposes), but for for all the pirate KJs, the delivery method is not the real issue - it's just a smokescreen. It's that any price is more expensive (on the front end) than "free". For those that steal our products on disc, what would lead us, or anyone, to believe that they would support paying for a download?

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

So can you please explain why you haven't hooked up with Invicion like CB did to be on board with their KJMP HD? There is still a lot of older music out there on SC I wish I had but I'm tired of buying those CDGs to get one or two songs that might sung and paying for all the fluff. They told me they would love to hook up with you.

CB and SC on the KJMP HD would be awesome for a new KJ or someone looking to create a 2nd rig!

I've got quite a few SC tracks but there's still a lot I want and don't have. If you were to partner with them on the KJMP HD I'd place my order as soon as it was available.

Nice to see that you are posting on the forums again. welcome back. as someone who used to download karaoke from torrents, I can give you a few reasons that I personally stopped doing it and started to buy downloads *legalities aside* from sites such as tricerasoft

1) better quality control . let's face it the majority of torrent downloads are crappy quality with extremely bad rips of the lyric swipes

2) better peace of mind - the likelyhood of being caught was slim, i'll admit but i'd rather have the reciepts to prove that at least i purchased that song in good faith

3) free to evaluate - most download sites have a 30 second clip that you can play to figure out if you like that version or not, thus saving you from buying tracks that u end up not liking

4)cheaper than custom discs, especially where your tracks are concerned.

current sounchoice custom discs are $5 per track, and the minimum order is 5 songs.

I would also like to add, for the record. That despite the fact I am not currently hosting, i too would buy the drive without hesitation or reservation whether or not soundchoice gets back to making new music.

The problem, as I see it, is how to distribute the money. Unless I am mistaken, credits are currently purchased directly from the chartbuster site *correct me if I'm wrong* with two sources of media available, how do u distinguish between the two?

Unless chartbuster and soundchoice can agree on the set price, then I guess a credit is just a credit.

Like others have stated, I'd jump on this in a heartbeat. I have almost 400 SC Discs and would love to be able to fill in certain holes in my library. With a CB & SC link up this drive would be a shoe in for any serious KJ. If they could then get Pocket Songs into the mix it would be unbeatable. With the current reasonable pricing per song, every one would win.

I would as well. I am still getting requests for songs that are only on SC. Just ordered a new custom disc this weekend.

Me three. I'd buy it instantly -- I am getting ready to pull the trigger on the MediaPro. Having SC would make it even better.

Looks like a money making opportunity to me! No musicians to deal with, no studios to haggle or hassle with. Just making money off of karaoke hosts. C'MON SOUND CHOICE, TALK TO THE HAND! THERE'S MONEY IN IT!

I wouldn't buy one new track...let alone a new disc...from SC. Anything new from SC will have a rider attached to NOT use on a Hard Drive...like their current re-released stuff.

no question i would buy it!
a legal drive loaded with the top quality tracks, what is not to love? a decent price per track to buy what my singers want is exactly what today's hosts need, and want.

Huh? Are you hip to what we are saying? If they do the KJMP thing,,, that IS a hard drive! It would be pretty stupid to hook up and sell these and then say you couldn't use them!

I know exactly what gd123 saying but that isn't the major problem. The problem is (once again) licensing. SC can NOT (repeat: CANNOT) simply copy their library to a hard drive and sell them that way.

this is true, but since CB has managed to figure out the impossible task of getting licensing for digital distribution, there is a step by step method for SC to follow.

I guess I am in serious violation with my GEM series then as I copied all 6000 songs to a hard drive.

Hmmm, play on words? Or is CB the only one to do this? I purchased my HD from there, it is even serialized!

It's good to hear they haven't given up the fight.

Now if we can get Pioneer to start doing Laser Discs again.

Since ALL of the major mfrs. have stated outright that they MAY NOT GIVE PERMISSION TO MEDIA SHIFT, then I'd say yup, you sure are- unless you received permission from the music OWNERS for each individual track.
