same here

so I guess this solution is out of the question

Depends on how it's connected. If the host can't unplug it, they can't take it to another machine and copy it. That's the key. If I remember correctly, I believe you can disable copying as a function as well.

In my case, my files are encrypted and my player does the decoding. There is no password required and the files are useless to anyone because they will only play on my player on my computer.

That's a great feature, too bad all the software manus don't do that.
What would happen if they did a hard drive clone with the software & song files?

I tried that a long time ago, all the files were there but the software wouldn't run (my license became invalid).
I would love to see other software manus take similar steps. I think it's a great anti-piracy feature.

I started another thread devoted to security over here:
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=22377&p=313308&sid=4c8cb3ed4e518313bf6c1636e07830fe#p313308

I thought it to be a topic worthy of its' own thread.

with internal drive becoming larger, this has some potential.

I've seen relatively cheap 750GB drives for laptops. My entire library - including LARGE size video files (which take up the bulk of the hard drive), only take up approx 340GB total for 12.5K songs.

Problem is, if you have to give that password to a host working for you, they can still copy your drive.

True, but I don't give the password to anyone and do not (and won't) have employees. I use Bestcrypt so that in the event someone steals my external USB drive with all my music on it, it will just be a door stop to them.

Just be aware that some of the large 1 and 2 TB drives are extremely SLOW....

What bitrate is your library of karaoke using? That's seems very small unless your compression rate is 128 or less.

Average song size is 11M or so at 256. 11,000,000 x 12,500 = 137.5 G
Sounds like 340G is enough to handle some laserdisc transfers and ripping at 320.

I am mostly ripped at 192, and my 19,000 song library only takes 185 G.

I only use Western Digital. I tried others but they crapped out within weeks.
I still have a 500GB Western Digital Mybook from 5 years ago. I've dropped it and broken the case several times (at least 4 or 5 times - Yikes!) over the years, but I just crazy glued it back together every time. It ain't pretty, but it's still going strong, just like those Timex watches of yesteryear.
I currently have a new (I've had it for almost a year now) 1TB Western Digital My Passport Essential SE. It uses USB3, but my comp uses USB2. It's lightening fast, even compared to my older USB2 drives. I've had ZERO issues with any of my WD products.
Just throwing it out there for those that want to know what drives are reliable.

My KMA files are ripped at 192 avg size around 8-9mb. The mpgs are 100mb for a 3 minute song.
