So there I was, practicing a new song, with some BIG notes (power notes) and it happened. Luckily I was at home... I opened my mouth, hit the note..... and blood sprayed out of my mouth like a Freddy Kruger movie. I mean everywhere- walls, floor, you name it. Scared the living hell out of me.... Holding a bucket in my lap, I head to the ER. Didn't know what happened- could have been anything. Well, it wasn't as serious - though it could have been, without care- as it was scary. I had somehow ( probably through incorrect singing of power notes in combination with being a gentleman of advanced middle age) developed a prolapsed vein in my throat. Here's a nice visual- an esophogal hemorrhoid.... Not to be confused with Esophogal varicese ( vericose esophogal veins) sometimes developed by shot drinking alcoholics or crack smokers). A bit of a hospital stay, but home and almost as good as new now... I think I'll stay away from the big ones for awhile though..

Good news to hear you're intact. But, wouldn't that have been one of the coolest ways to end a song in karaoke and still come back to sing again? People would be coming to your show on the chance it might happen again! A nice signature move to a signature song. Stand back! He's going to sing it again! Get out the Gallagher plastic!

Joe, you are fortunate that's ALL that happened. I've heard that in worse cases, your stomach splits open and a little demon pops out.
Hey, maybe that's what makes you so argumentative. You've got a little demon inside you. <TIC>

The full version of Impossible Dream ( as done by Robert Goulet/Jim Nabors). This was not a karaoke track ( I've never seen/heard the COMPLETE version on karaoke- on ANY label), but the original backing track. Both Nabors and Goulet make that last "star" a huge ending. I used to sing it quite well when I was younger, but hadn't even tried to do so in about 15 years. I guess now I know why.... I lost the ability to hit the last note in Elvis' Trilogy too. ( Yeah, I know. Elvis couldn't do it with strength and depended on the back up singers, but dammit, I COULD do it with strength.) What's weird is that I can still whup a$$ with Cara Mia. Go figure...

Johnny, at least you had a catcher for the mess ( I'm assuming that you weren't naked at the time, but with you, who knows...) if not the scent. Should've recorded a sound sampler of that monster....

Wow, that scares me a bit too. Being a bass who likes rock music, I often try to push the limits of my upper range just a tad higher so I can do a few of them. When I'm home and nobody, but me has to suffer with the howling I'll even try some Journey stuff, but now I'm thinking twice about that... Glad you are ok...

This condition usually kills alcoholics because a blood vessel will break low in the esophagus and begin slowly bleeding constantly into their stomach. They won't know they are bleeding and will ignore the telltale signs until they literally run out of blood and die. Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esophageal_varices

Wow, ain't that an upbeat piece of info..... Actually, the doc mentioned that, though he also added that they usually get at least one visible episode of some sort, which, as you stated- they completely ignore.. Thanks to all for the kind words and good thoughts!
