This is more for the home user and not the KJs. I have been shopping for books at local thrift stores. While shopping one day I looked at some cds on a shelf. Was surprised to find several cdg sitting on the shelf. I ended up getting 3 cdgs for $2.50.

So of course every time I head out to a thrift store I check. So far including the first 3, I've picked up about 12 cdgs. Most only cost $0.50-$1.00 per disc.

Two points when doing this:

One most are consumer brands....Party Tyme, Singing Machine, MTV, and one I've never heard of Best Karaoke.

Two CHECK DISC FOR SCRATCHES AND TO MAKE SURE THE RIGHT DISC IS IN CASE!

I've picked up some great music cheap, and my family has enjoyed the songs. Just picked up Party Tyme Girl Pop 6 for $0.50 today. Disc and case looked brand new.

I always check 2nd hand stores & pawn shops for karaoke discs. In 20 years, I only found 6 discs at a pawn shop. No luck in that regard. Have heard of others that get lucky fairly regular.

I have been very lucky in this regard with Part Tyme, Karaoke Party, and MTV. The first two brands are- though department store brands- not bad! I guess I've picked up around 20 discs this way at the Goodwill store..

I haven't tried Goodwill or Pawn shops. I guess I will have to go out tomorrow when kids are in school. Thanks

There was a club up here in the later 80's that still used the 8 track and cassette systems - big binder of printed song lyrics. Once laserdisc karaoke came out (or became more popular up here) they dropped it.

I find a lot of discs in thrift and second hand stores. Pawn shops don't seem to have anything in my area. Check dollar stores, too. Got some rare Singing Machine discs there for only a dollar each a year or so ago!

A funny thing just happened. I had to take a drive to drop off some stuff for my daughter. On the way, I decided to stop at the thrift store, looking for some clothing for my daughter. While there. I decided to check this store's CD's. Normally, I don't bother at this store, since their CD's never seem to move and they never seem to get new stuff. But because I had just posted to this thread, I decided to take my own advice and check anyway.
Good thing I checked!
I found 11 like new karaoke CD's for 50 cents each! Brands are Singer's Dream, Disney, BCI, and Party Tyme.

Well you never know when or where you might find some decent karaoke disc. I went to a second hand childrens store with the wife to look for some soccer shoes for the grandchild. While she was looking at shoes and other sports items I was checking out the toy section. I ran across a used karaoke cdg player and several Soundchoice cdg's and a few Partytyme cdg's. I scored 6 discs that I dind't have for $1.00 apiece. 4 SC and 2 PT..you just never know.

The only time I ever found a deal on anything karaoke was when I was in Reno around 2000 or so. Hit a pawn shop there & saw a brand new in the box Pioneer V880 laserdisc/CDG/VCD player marked at $200 - these things retailed around $900-1100 depending on the store. That was a no brainer! Didn't get to gamble that day, but oh well. That player is still working today.
One of the pawn shops I talked to up here said they won't even take karaoke discs anymore because they hardly ever move??? While I sit there looking at RACKS of CD's & DVD's that they are constantly having sales on just to get rid of them - thought that was kind of a weird reason.

When I was thinking about becoming a KJ I was constantly on ebay and craigslist looking for disk deals. Then one day, i happened upon an ad for 600 karaoke disks for $400.

Of course, I thought, "Too good to be true." but i called and got an older lady and made an appointment to go over her house and see what she was selling.

When I got there i found out her husband was a KJ and had died and she was selling his stuff. Piece by piece. I just looked at her told her the collection was worth a lot of money... a lot more than what she was selling it for. It had almost the entire foundation series with the bricks. Legends 1 - 212, and a bunch of other things, but those were the main two sets.

She said she didn't care, she just wanted it gone.

Needless to say, I gave her the money without hesitation and counted myself lucky... and that's the library i started my business with. :)Gibson electric guitar

94% of my music collection (both DJ & KJ) was sourced from pawn shops, eBay, CraigsList, thrift stores, and resale shops over the years.

Between that and loading up on goodies from other DJ's and KJ's either retiring or flat out giving up on it, i've gotten quite a bunch of stuff over the years.

Thrift stores are also a great place to load up on cases to lug gear to and from gigs. I've got some really nice laptop bags and top end luggage to carry my gear around in style from the Salvation Army thrift stores.. usually at less than $3 a case.

CRT & LCD monitors.. mic stands.. lighting.. inflatable instrument props.. man, i've scored quite a bit of gig related stuff from thrift stores over the years.
