I would disagree about that hookup. A good compressor is easily available for less than $200. You would want to use the insert in your mic channel to do the compression. I am not sure that the compressor even has a mic pre-amp, and if it does it isn't as good as the one on the ZED.

I've research other compressors and I'm not very impressed by the reviews. It seems you have to spend around $200 and above to get something decent.

Not sure what your intended use is, just know this is a single channel unit - can only connect to one mic. Designed more for recording and not so much live, but can be used live. If you need more than one mic, then you might look into something else. The dbx 266XL is a good 2 channel unit.

I like the compressor you suggested better and it's less expensive. I'm just going to use it for karaoke. I would like to connect the mic to the compressor and then from the compressor to the mixer so I can have even sounding recordings. All I want to do is maximize the mix so it's as professional sounding as I can make it on a budget.

Depending on your mixer, the better hookup option is to connect the compressor via the 'insert' jack on the mic channels. The only reason you'd connect the compressor inline is if the mixer didn't have that jack.
Also a compressor isn't necessarily going to make the overall 'mix' much better, it just keeps the vocals more in an even level when used properly. The overall mix is still going to depend on the input material & how it's all adjusted by the user. Once recorded, depending on the software, there usually are editing tools to normalize/eq/etc the final mix to an even sounding level.

I've done some more research and found the FMR RNC 1773 Compressor Unit ($175), which gets excellent reviews:

This is my top pick at this point. It's small and everyone says it sounds as good as expensive studio compressors.

I have 2 of these and they work great. The one thing you have to remember to do is to depress the "Super Nice" button everytime you power it up. Very easy to use and transparent. I bought mine for $125 a couple of years ago.

For that price i'd still opt for the dbx. Gives you independent control on each channel rather than one set of controls for both.
