You don't say what kind of external mixer you are using, but most are laid out the same. Check your "gain" setting (should be the top knob) it's probably set too high.

See if you haven't by accident switched on the Phantom power on your mixer.

Read the following!

Phantom power is a dc voltage (11 - 48 volts) which powers the preamplifier of a condenser microphone. Phantom power is normally supplied by the microphone mixer, but may also be supplied by a separate phantom power supply. Phantom requires a balanced circuit in which XLR pins 2 and 3 carry the same dc voltage relative to pin 1. So if a mixer supplies 48 volts of phantom, XLR pins 2 and 3 of the microphone cable each carry 48 volts dc relative to pin 1. Of course, the mic cable carries the audio signal as well as the phantom voltage.

Mixers that supply phantom power contain current limiting resistors which act as control valves. If the microphone or cable is improperly wired, these resistors limit the flow of current to the microphone and thereby prevent damage to the phantom supply circuit.

Does turning on the phantom power could do any damage to dynamic mics ?
Providing dynamic microphones are balanced types and wired with twin screened all the way through the phantom power will do no physical harm. So there should be no problem with most popular dynamics with correct balanced wiring. Modern dynamic microphones with balanced connectors are constructed so that the microphone element is completely floating so adding phantom power voltages does not affect it when you are using proper balanced cabling.

Many older dynamic mics have a center tap of the transformer in the mic grounded to the body of the mic, and to the shield of the cable. This could short the phantom voltage to ground, and could fry the transformer. It is easy to tell if this is the case with your mics. An ohmmeter or continuity checker will tell you if there is a DC circuit between either pin #2 or #3 and the cable shield (pin #1) or the mic housing. If so, don't use that mic with the phantom turned on. Good luck.

Do not try to connect microphones with unbalanced conenctor to a microphone input with phantom power on, because the current from the pahntom power supply will flow though your microphone and can damage it.

Chances are it isn't the phantom power. If that were the case it would more than likely make an undesireable noise rather than amplifying the signal.
Regular mics could be affected by the phantom power in a negative way only if there weren't any "condensor" mics hooked up to the mixer as well. Most likely the phantom power supply would burn out or possibly even the mixer power supply before damage to mics would happen.

I think AllStar might have found it! The line in should be at 0db or 60% in your case with the Creative Surround Mixer. The recording should also be at 0db in this case 50%.

If it doesn't work, why not just reset to the default Creative settings?

Good Luck!

ok What Now, if you use MS Windows as OS, then

Click on the start icon (left hand bottom of screen)
Goto Settings
Select Control Panel
Select Sounds and Multimedia

There you will find the playback and record settings!

That, unfortunately, I do not know!
