Update.............the ones I know paid $7500 to become legal.... and still in business. Like I said, these folks weren't worried, just paid the money and still in KJing....

Why then would someone want to run legal? Just payoff SC when you get caught! SC could atleast post the pirates pictures and identify them on their website!

Because it costs over twice as much to do it that way?

Not really.
Twice as much as buying the gem before you get caught? Maybe.
Twice as much as buying the discs for years and operating legally? No where near - much much less.
Twice as much as never getting caught? Not at all - much much more.

Considering these persecutions are only occuring in a very few areas that are friendly to lawsuit businesses, and most of the rest of the country is free to do whatever they like, it seems like a very safe gamble to operate as a pirate until getting caught. Twice as much as nothing is nothing.

Four thousand dollars that is not spent on music early on in a new KJ operation can go a long way toward building that business up to a point where the shell-out of eight grand in hush money later won't hurt nearly as much as wasting four grand in the onset. It's a gamble worth taking even in areas that are target focal points of these lawsuits.

If one builds a successful KJ business with free stolen music, getting named, shelling out eight grand, then being declared legit and allowed to boast his legit status to compete with those who have always been legit can actually be a boost to his business and his status in that business.

Being sued by Soundchoice is possibly the second best thing that can happen to a successful pirate.

Exactly my point! If SC was causing real damage to these pirates they would not want back in the business or atleast would carry a record that others could check such as those hiring them. SC is not punishing pirates they are just accepting settlements and it appears without repercussion. This does nothing to help KJs now or in the future! Running without SC or paying them seems to be your only choices!

Jethro Bodine math.... I love it!

It's in SC's interest to sue only "established KJ's" because suing a newbie won't be worth it, they won't have enough income to make the payments affordable. Remember, we're usually talking about the KJ that works a couple nights at week....

Absolutely. And for us "old timers" we didn't have the "Cheap, E-Z pirate financing" that these pirates are getting. We had to build our libraries slowly and carefully and always cash-up-front.

They can walk around boasting that they are "certified" and go after gigs like Rodney's.... after all; he's not certified is he? Nope.... and he's getting sued for it. I'm sure that someone like InsaneKJ is courting his gigs as fast and furious as possible.

If paying $3500 instead of $7500 is a "maybe", you might look into hiring an accountant.

It depends Bazza.... if a pirate can make more than the required $3,500 with no cash outlay.... it's always better than getting a loan (you're stuck with even if you change your mind) and having to expense it along the way...

Yep, basic accounting principles and it's in the favor of the "pirate-soon-to-be-customer" operator out there because the rest of us didn't have the "free access to music" that they have nor did we have the "E-Z financing" available either. It was about $2.20/song and cash in ADVANCE.

I don't need an accountant to explain to me the fact that niether the purchase price nor it's relationship to the settlement price has been static. There are variables in existence that tend change the final outcome. To me that's the definition of "maybe".
You might look into a dictionary.

LOL And you might look into buying a calculator. I have seen them for $3.99, $9.99 and $250.00. I am guessing the $250 model is your speed.

Better yet, just steal the calculator. If you dont get caught, you will have saved a lot more money than the guy who buys one. Sure, you may have to pay more if you get caught, but what are the chances?

You would be better served getting a calendar to go with that dictionary.

The 3500 price expired yesterday.
It's now $4480.
4480 X 2 = 8960
Seems like the numbers do change (that's what I meant when I implied they were not static - in other words, not fixed).

If 8960 is twice as much as 3500 on your calculator, perhaps you should ad a new calculator to your current shopping list.

And maybe the price will go down to 3000 on the next rounds of suits. Just maybe.

What? That ONE OLD FBI case, Dan Sterns?
Whoop-di-do!
Pretty stale, when there are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of sellers out there and many of you can easily find them, yet SC can't!
But they certainly have no trouble finding John Doe!

I guess it took some time.
