I have downloaded Audacity to change keys of certain songs but I don't know the existing key (untrained). Is there a software that detects the existing key so I know where to start from?
Currently, I am trying to raise the key up twice of Queen's Somebody to Love (DK Karaoke version). Does anyone know what key this is in?

Up one half-step, etc. This is true for Audacity as well. The makers of Pacemaker provide Soundstretch, which is a command line utility that works for Windows, Mac, or Linux. It will alter the pitch of .WAV files. But as far as I know, all you need to do is select the track in Audacity, select the pitch change effect, and enter the number of semi-tones. To change from F to D#, use -2 for the number of semitones. You don't need to know the key itself to do that if you are doing it to ear.

No, that would be 4, because you would need 4 semitones to go 2 FULL steps up. That's a lot. When we talk in karaoke about "up 2", we mean two half-steps, or two semitones.

Are you singing this to your dog? This is one of the songs DK has lowered the key from the original so most people can sing it. I believe raising it 2 full steps up is just like the original. I can sing tenor. Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll report back.

why not just get the Sound Choice or Zoom Version of the song? I believe that they recorded it in the original key. According to the Sound Choice splash screen; it is recorded in (Ab).

A nice little program used to do harmonic mixing between songs for DJing is "Mixed in Key". It will analyze your music and tell you tell you the key so you can mix it with other music of the same key. The trial version should give you an answer as to the original key. http://www.mixedinkey.com/

Queen - Somebody To Love is originally Ab (A flat). Which would coincide with DK's tendancy to drop their songs 2 notes bringing it to around an F.

The Audacity did work raising the key, however, now the background vocalists are part chipmunk. I now have the Sound Choice version which is right on. I will look into that http://www.mixedinkey.com/. Thanks again, guys.
