Personally I don't care for them. I like the more laid back & live feel of a club/bar - especially if the kj knows how to dial the sound in.
The little room/box styles I don't care for the sound & could just run the same type thing in my house for a lot cheaper.

Yup. I don't care for them, either. Might as well be at home.

I have always felt like private room karaoke was more to showcase a performance for a small group of known friends, or maybe to practice. "Regular" bar/club karaoke has more of a spontaneous, fun feel to it.

I was in LA last weekend and the karaoke boxes are HUGE in KoreaTown. Why do you suppose it works for that culture? I'm just curious as to why...I rather enjoyed it, but the English song selection was extremely limited..

I don't like them.

here is a very honest answer why..

I am an attention seeker and like showing off , i like people i do not know , clapping and shaking my hand or buying me drinks when i sing..

rooms and boxes do not massage my ego enough.

If many are honest that's why they like public shows too

If a man sings a song in an empty room, does he still make a sound?

I have friends who use them much as a home singer would use their own system. They get a few people together and go have their own little private party. The reason they do it is because they don't want to inflict themselves on others.

They originated in Japan/Asian culture. They definitely are more popular with them. Americas karaoke caught on and stuck more in clubs. You can find the 'box' rooms here, just not as common & usually in the Asian areas of town.

Nah, just get your own system and be as private as you want at home.

I like an audience, too. I'd just like a place that mixes up both styles.

Homes are not as large or as soundproof in Asia, hence the need for boxes.

Also, just like movie is the most common first date here, karaoke is the most common first date in many parts of Asia.

You have a funny concept to think about--just imagine each singer practicing away in their own little box waiting to be called up to the main stage. But then who would be around to clap for the other singers?

Imagine a packed house...and maybe 2 or 3 private rooms to rent by the hour..small rooms...the one I went to in Austin fit 8-10 people while the rest of the patrons continued with their bowling...

The "Box" style is very popular in the Asian populated areas..

One near my place has zero English songs, and no English speakers working the counter..

So, I did not sing..

On my first trip to Japan, I wanted to sing some Karaoke in the mother-land and my Japanese associate took me to a Karaoke Parlor with dozens of rooms of various sizes. Ours fit about four people MAX, had a mirror ball on the ceiling, the massive on-demand server system and a waitress with food & drink that would stop by every 30 minutes or so.

It was OK, but nothing like a western karaoke bar. When I mentioned that his response was "Oh no...most Japanese would be much too embarrassed to stand up and sing in front of strangers!". Different strokes I guess.

I did however sing "My woman from Tokyo"...in Tokyo. Which was nice.
