Last week I ordered a 1u sliding keyboard tray with a keyboard that has an integrated touchpad mouse. I also ordered a 2u rack mount PC case to replace the GIANT 4u PC case I currently have.

This will all go into my existing production system and doing a short video on the rebuild.

Anyone interested in seeing something like this?

I personally love looking at pics and videos of other people's setups. I do not judge what other people use as I feel that is a childish trait. I just like to look. :)

That would be cool... but it would be a pain if you had to fix anything since 2u products are not something you can just buy off the shelf (like the 4u pc's)

2u case this will be interesting as most video cards need at least 3U so i will be interested in what you come up with as i would like a 2U rack PC

From where I am sat I can see a few hundred 1u racks.
It is not uncommon for the video card to sit in a small riser card.

are they dual head cards? when ever i have looked for a decent video card they have a massive fan on them that with a horizontal riser they still foul on everything , but i am no expert hence why i would like to see how he does this and what components he uses

So jerry12x I could get a Short 1U rack case with everything i need to run VDJpro full with recommended requirements of

Intel processor
1440x900 resolution
Multi-channel CoreAudio compatible soundcard
2048MB (2Gb) RAM
200MB free on the hard drive
ATI™ or NVIDIA® video chipset w/256MB of Dedicated DDR3 RAM
Video must support dual-screen output ?

and i could get that to fit in a 1U short case with no heating problems?

of course i would want a rack PC with higher than this basic spec as this is only the recommended spec.

Always interested in seeing others gear and setups.

I've got a 1u supermicro that I was going to put in my rack, but after having to add a keyboard tray and external monitor I decided the weight and hassle of the 1U vs. a laptop it just wasn't for me.

Video cards? What? I am using onboard video. I am using the onboard sound as well. My exisiting system is just a motherboard, power supply and two hard drives. Super simple. I am just moving all of the guts into the new case (may swap power supplies because the current one is ancient).

As for parts supply, I am picking all of this stuff up off eBay. Also lots of contacts in the PC industry. I am re-configuring this initial system then taking the learnings to build a second.

I received the 1u Keyboard and tray yesterday. Plugged it into my desktop and the keyboad and mouse were instantly seen so I am super happy about that. With any luck I will get the 2u case this week and I can video the rebuild this weekend. Hopefully have the video edited and posted early next week.

There is a small, independent used computer supply store not far from me. I picked up 4:3 19" monitor that I removed the base. I am building a mount inside the gig case lid for it so it all stays in the case. No moving separate pieces around.

My goal is to have the entire rig in one cases except for the speakers and the monitor for singer lyrics.

The fan is not so big on the video card you want.
As for the video there are alternatives to a twin head.

I see lots of problems from people who use shared memory on MTU hoster and VDJ forums they always recommend dedicated video cards with dedicated memory. Thats why i was worried about making sure i would get a decent video card
but you guys are computer experts so you must know what your on about.

with VDJ i also want asio compatible audio for when i use a midi controller for proper DJ mixing

I use an integrated video on my laptop with Hoster just fine. On my PC I had a couple graphic lag issues.
On board audio is a no no in my book especially knowing that a good pro audio card can take the ok sound to a night & day difference.

Rob, I can get you a Lenovo T60 at a good price.
T2400 @1.83. Duel core
Been using compuhost on one for over three years.
It will have problems with the plastic, a mark on the screen. A reason to move it cheap but working.
With marks I am guessing around £60
You will not get a better offer on planet earth..
Will have 2-3gb of ram. 100gb Hd.
The Lappy will be better than any rack mount unit.
I also will not make a penny on anything I have a hand in.

I have high spec laptops the reason i was looking at rack mount was to get a computer that would cruise doing complex video mixing and karaoke and be VDJ compatible , that is why i wanted serious grunt both visually and audio wise. i have been asked a fair bit for video DJ'ing and with legal videos becoming easily available and reasonable cheap ..thats why i have been interested in a rack mount PC.

lap tops with powerful processors , lots of ram ,dedicated video cards with serious amounts of dedicated video ram ,good audio , good cooling , large storage and backlit keyboards are not cheap or easy to find..where as if i were to tailor make a rack pc to the spec I would need and like then it would be specific to the jobs i need it to do.

with video also large storage would be required and to get around carrying lots of externals i was looking at making a 3u rack mount super VJ KJ DJ console in the future.

I know you can go integrated graphics and audio in a small factor for just karaoke but i am often required to do many things in the types of gigs and functions i do.

I have been using a laptop for a few years for karaoke and running VDJ but when i am required to do video mixing with transitions and effects the cpu meter and the laptop heat starts to peak out...

Thanks for the offer jerry12x It looks a great deal and i am always on the look out for bargains but i don't need back up at this moment in time.sorry.

I never mentioned it, but another reason I chose to go rack mount was for expandability. If I were to ever handle requests like what Rob mentions, it is just a matter of adding storage (the MoBo I used has on board RAID), add a dedicated video card and if necessary, add a dedicated sound board.

Keeps the wiring to a minimum and no chance of misplacing or having external peripherals growing legs.
