Can someone fill me in with using Sunfly at gigs? I've heard mixed stories about legalities. Thanks...

Lots of possibilities here. Do you mean Sunfly discs, or downloads?

Sunfly Discs and downloads are commonly used and are the most popular brand in the UK ..I do not know the legalities in other regions unfortunately.

I know the US retailers can not legally sell them (or any UK brand produced after Jan '11 for that matter) in the US anymore. Whether or not you can use them in a club that pays their PR fees is another debate. Dj's as far as I can remember have always used imports from other countries in their shows. Don't see the difference for a kj - again as long as the club is paying their PR fees. But........?

If you are using Sunfly discs, then you are in the same boat as anyone using SGB, Music Maestro, Top Tunes, or any other disc- good to go. Since you are using the disc, all liability for any actions lies on the mfrs. shoulders.
Also, retailers and distributors can continue to sell the products until their stock is depleted. However, they can no longer buy new stock from the UK.
It is my understanding that though product from the UK can no longer be imported for resale or distribution, single direct-to-end-user sales are still allowed. However, this should be double-checked.

Forgive my ignorance on this, but why can't US based distributors buy and sell UK based CD+G's?

-Chris Because they are only licesned for worldwide sale/distribution - minus US & Canada!

-Chris Not Jan 11th, Jan 2011. Actually trying to find the actual link, but found a prior post about it and it is actually anything produced after Dec 2010. It's in here somewhere. http://www.prsformusic.com/SiteCollecti ... 7%2010.pdf

This explains the drop in price of their products...Ok, so if I buy from a UK source and use them at gig's I'm not liable?...

If you are looking for reliable legal advice, you have come to the wrong place. I don't believe there is anywhere you can turn to get reliable legal advice on karaoke hosting matters. Opinions tend to vary widely.
My opinion: If you buy tracks from an overseas supplier, you own those tracks and suffer no greater exposure to litigation by using them in your show than you would by using any tracks you purchase from a USA source. No matter the manufacturer or distributor, you are always at risk of being sued by the original song writer/publisher when using your tracks in a business environment for profit. This of course hasn't stopped any of us from going on with the show.
