I am not a prof KJ, but more of a recreational karaoke fan. We like to get the scene going in our basement from time to time and as such have an online membership to Karafun. It serves us well for the most part. I was recently asked to do Karaoke at the local legion (not for money of course), but was wondering if that is considered illegal in any way??? Can anyone help out with this.

Also, wondering if anyone know where I might be able to get a song list for the karafun online. It would be nice to have that at home.

thanks.

Or, does anyone know of any better online memberships since mine is expiring soon anyways.

Chartbuster has a new streaming karaoke service that runs about 7 or 8 dollars a month. you should check it out.

if your not profiting from it and doing it for free then it's considered personal use here in america.

when you start charging for your service then it's considered commercial use.
but if your using it at a location that charges a cover charge or sells food and drinks and they are profiting from having you there for free then you fall into the commercial category.

so i would just keep it at home.

thanks for the replies.. does anyone know if the chartbusters home use online membership works cohesively with any programs.. ie.. I prefer to not use a webpage for song selection. The karafun program links up with the online songs.

Also, with respect to legalities.. i'm from canada but i imagine the laws are fairly similar. As stated, i'm not being paid for the service but the Legion does sell alcohol. That being said, I am fairly certain Royal Cdn Legions are "non profit" organizations, meaning that their alcohol sales etc are viewed as fundraisers and no actual dividends or money is paid out to anybody at end of year... wonder if that makes a difference. Its a pretty rural town anyways and they have been doing their karaoke this way for a while so i dont think there are any problems..

I think he is referring to using personal use only programs/music in a commercial setting. For instance, Karafun has a personal use program but if you use it in a commercial venture, they ask you to license a pro program for a fee. Chartbuster charges a different streaming price for home use than commercial use.

That being said, I am not from Canada and don't know how volunteering to help a money making venue shakes out.

My bad, I should have learned before speaking out of turn.
