Honkey Cat Karaoke

The company produced 6 discs and then went out of business. All the tracks sound like they were created on a Casio keyboard.

I've bever heard of Honkey Cat, but this makes me wonder:

Years ago there was some site or disc ( I can't remember which) that had 75,000 karaoke songs for the computer for something like 10 or 20 bucks from a company called ( I think) Van Basco?. These were all midi, and also sounded like Casio music. I wonder if the HK people tried selling these tracks as actual karaoke?

Just points of interest:

Standing Ovation became Backstage- the logo even comes up on the screen.

Nutech is made by BMB/Nikkodo.... The few that I have have Nikkodo's name on the label in smaller print.

Actually, Standing Ovation just took the Backstage discs and put their name to the brand instead. When I said that Standing Ovation was so bad, it should be used as a Coaster, I was referring to when Standing O made their own CDGs.

Likewise with NuTech... They just took on Nikkodo's library and slapped their name to it... I was referring to the NuTech discs that NuTech made.

I totally forgot about Star Disc too.... I don't own any, but I have seen them in use, and they truely do SABO! If their words swipes aren't off, their music is.

Nu Tech, lol - they even dressed up their products by issuing a set of Laserdiscs. Same craptastic music accompanied by colorful videos.

Don't you just love it when someone thinks that the SGB tracks are a great buy and then the same person thinks that Idol Makers Karaoke is the worst brand out there???? LOL

The part of the DK series that have the pan flute.....I consider those unusable as well, even though the swipes and the actual music are top notch.....the pan flute lead vocal guide was a HORRIBLE idea.

Premium companies buy up lesser companies, it's not a big deal, especially in the vehicle world. Why do you think they have different sub-divisions? Different products for different people.

I actually own both complete sets. Idol makers by far is much worse than SGB. The reason being, although they are definitely the same tracks, IM are very poorly produced. The sound quality is terrible in comparison. A good analogy would be if someone took a 128kbs mp3 and redid them on 60kbs. Makes for atrocious sound quality, and SGB overall is not all that bad. Not great either, but definitely passable, except, like someone else said, that terrible applause that some idiot thought would somehow improve the song. IM is the biggest waste of money I've ever spent. I have never used any of their tracks and I seriously doubt I ever will.

The lasers came first - again if you were lucky enough to get some of the early stuff, SOME of it was pretty good as they took music tracks from other manus. Then they did cdg/vcd releases later.

Idol Makers is a repackaged SGB, but fewer songs and tracks are listed alphabetically. They changed the ID screens but otherwise the music and graphics are the same including all the wrong words and typos.

I just compared the few Idol Maker tracks I have against SGB. I don't agree. Just my opinion, but the Idol Makers are much worse. Then again, it may be that if they are SGB copies, lousy reproduction made them that much worse, making you correct....

EDIT: Whoops, I just noticed that I pretty much posted a repetition of Diafel's post. Well, make this an " I second" post.. :)

Sorry I have 3 Idol Maker discs that someone gave me and they compare exactly - no degradation to the Sweet Georgia Brown set! If you don't hear it, it's because you do not WANT to hear it!

There is alot of crap out there, we seem to agree on that. One thing I don't agree with is the statement about Sunfly. I think there stuff is Top Shelve. I have over a 100 songs of many different Genres, and all are top notch productions. Don't let the cartoon fly Logo fool you, or that their British...

You only have 100 tunes, which tells me you picked each song (download/custom?), so you most likely heard a sample before hand if you pick like most people.
Sunfly does have some great stuff, however i've been working/running shows since 90 and Sunfly was ok in the begninning (around 92-93) for about the first 7-10 discs (plus they had stuff that wasn't available in the US), then their stuff went WAY down hill - you could still find passable stuff and some really good stuff, but also ALOT of synthy/MIDI type tracks. They've only recently (within the last 5-6 years) really start to pick back up in music quality and even more so now since they now use the same tracks SBI uses now.

Pyledriver,
many have told me I should give sunfly another try and recently I have heard a few good tracks however having been in the biz for over 17 years the early stuff was REALLY bad ( I made the mistake of buying a order of sunfly's in about 99 and there was not a decent singable song in all 70+ discs was burned bad on that one) and for many years sunfly hit the "extra's bin' without a second look. I may sample some now as they do have some artists I like not available elsewhere.

Good to know guys. I'm going to order the Eagles WS001 and Doors WS066 next week and give it a go. I'll keep you posted on the quality of them. My fingers are crossed as they have great line-ups...As far as the origin of the Sunfly I have, they came with the "Bad Apple"...

NorthStar by far followed up Sunfly in distant second

If you hear some of the more recent Sunfly releases they are actually very good. It's their early stuff you have to avoid, sounds like a 5-year-old could have done better. As for their version of Johnny Nash's I can see clearly now, I would question whether they even listened to the original song before producing that track.

Music maestro is a tricky one. I've had experience with a handful of their tracks, most of them are frankly piss-poor, some cheap midi job. But there are a few songs they make that (as far as I can tell) no other manufacturer does and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of these. Given the choice of MM's version of "Ooh Child" vs Sound Choice I'd probably have to toss a coin to decide, as they are both decent tracks. Like SC and Zoom, MM seem to employ a "no fade out" rule, so far the only track of their I've heard with a faded ending is Tracy chapman's "Wedding song" (another decent MM track).

My local KJ has a lot of Kwizoke tracks (thousands of them), and many of them are the worst I've ever heard whilst others are among the best. The main drawback is the Kwizoke machine is midi based, so there are (usually) no backing vocals.

The point of this thread was to have some fun naming some folks' all time worst brands- not to pi$$ all over each other. Some folks just can't relax, adult up, and have a good time- but would rather start crap in ANY thread. Bummer...

out of all the discs I own, I would have to say the SAV+P set i own is the worse, i believe that makes them nutech.

I have a few idol maker discs, but for some reason, I find the frank sinatra stuff they did passable *just barely but still* maybe because it sounds more 'big band' style to me.

if i could find the idiot who produced the SGB weird al disc, I would personally beat them to death with a machine that played an applause sound track. :P
