@ChrisAvis quote: "I also used to keep a stop watch timer on my desktop that I would start at the end of a singers song. I set a 45 second limit to get the next singer going. If the singer didn't have a track ready by the 60 second mark I would call the next singer and bump the other down one. They would get moved to the bottom of the rotation if they let it happen twice. I have it pretty well figured out these days." I only have one or two 30 sec waits between "ending note" and "starting note" per night. Most of my singers are next to the stage waiting for the mic to be handed to them. I play 60 to 70 songs per night and even 15 secs between singers is 16+ minutes wasted every night waiting for singers. At most I might waste 3 or 4 minutes per show and some evenings not even that much. Yes, you have to be focussed to do this, but mostly it is training the singers to be ready. Believe me they love it.

I agree that such a policy CAN create wasted time in between singers, but I can pull up a sing in less than 5 seconds on Virtual DJ and I will sometimes skip right to the music portion.
When a singer waivers at all as far as what they will sing, I will talk to them offline and discuss it with them. My "regular" singers are very well trained now, I lean my ear to them before they even get on stage and in the vast majority of the cases, they tell me the moment they walk on stage.

Even new singers at my gigs don't make me wait for their song choice... maybe it's the look I give them if they don't have a song picked! Really though, if they come up and put their name in without a song, I tell them to watch the screen a have a song ready when their turn comes up. This works fine. I can put a song in cue in just a couple seconds... no delay in show. By the time they turn on their mic, the music is playing. The exception is the regulars that want me to pick their songs for them... they come say hi when they arrive so I put their name in. They like me to pick the song that I think goes well with the rotation (fast, slow etc). Karma's singer history is great for this! They even come up and say goodbye if/when they leave so I can remove their names. Great people I have!

By the way, the beautiful thing is that my "No Slip - No Trip" (to the stage) policy has freed me up tremendously. I can't tell you how many times I pre-planned a trip to the bathroom or out for a quick smoke during a 5 minute song, and I have 5 people lined up to hand me their slips or ask questions. There goes 3 minutes of the song....
Also, I was thinking about making foursquare part of my "No Slip-No Trip" policy - make people check in when they want to sing, and check out when they're done. That would work beautifully if everyone had access to it and knew how to use it.

Seems like it never fails when ya plan for a quick trip away, someone will come up and take up the time! But if I really HAVE to go... I tell 'em so on the mic and let them dance one. No one complains and I'm quick!

We all have our preferences and I too have picked up a few tips from this thread. I like a fast rotation as a singer and as a host but for my show and my venue 30-35 seconds between singers works real well. if I tried to do 15 seconds, I think the place would implode. But I may give it a go when we add the seconf (and maybe 3rd) nights to the venue. Maybe test it out as a "Speed Karaoke" night or something.
BTW.....awesome thread folks. Love to hear about how people run their shows!

Thinking about the time between singers.. I think it has a lot to do with the size of the place. My thurs gig is a huge hotel bar.. it takes them 10-15 seconds to get to the front...and more if they're not paying attention. I think I'll count how many songs are sung on a typical night.. would be interesting to know..
The smaller bars are more like 'hand the mic to the next singer' type... hardly any filler music played because the tail of one song gets faded into the next singers song.
All the singers like a quick rotation though .. and I do too... I feel bad if people don't get to sing all their chosen songs.

Not to be forced by the software to say this is the way it is now because i'm limited by the software. I don't understand this. I can place a new singer anywhere in the list I desire. I don't have any fictitious "software limitations" at all with Compuhost. Now, when I add a new singer, if I DON'T want them at the bottom, I have to click and drag them where I want them. Is that the limitation? It takes 2 seconds. yes you can but I operate on the idea that the singers are used to seeing when they are coming up and I don't want to deal with a complainer that their turn was next but I put a new singer in front of them so I adopted a place the singer before the marker position policy when I changed to Compuhost.

When I add a singer, by default it places them at the bottom but it takes about 2 seconds to place them where ever I want to in the rotation for whatever reason. To me, once the show starts, there is no start or end. Until the very end of the night of course, at that point, the last singer would be the end.

To me.... a rotation is a rotation, a circle. A new singer goes in the list just before the currently singing person (bottom of the rotation). Therefore the new singers name is not in the top four of the marque. No exceptions! .. Well, except for Rule #4... Rule #4: We will not 'bump' you up in the list just because you ask... however for a $20 tip you can be the next singer. This is allowed once per night per person. I don't get the $20 very often but when I do, I just announce "According to Rule #4 in the book, Joe will be our next singer" This encourages people to read the rules .. and I've never had someone complain about it.

When I have figured out the last singer on CompuHost, I then set the rotation choice to "delete". That makes everyone drop off the scrolling marquee until just the final singer remains... kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Not a bad idea, I will consider that. Compuhost will do some of the things Lonnie mentioned. New singers are listed in red font. Their start time in is listed, time of last performance is listed, and estimated time of next performance is listed although I would advise singers not to live by that last one, as singers are added, it will change. I keep current singer and next 3 listed on my scrolling marquee. People can't see my rotation unless they come up on stage and stand next to me facing my laptop. I've had people want to see if a few times over the few years I've been hosting but not much lately. If they question anything in the rotation, I simply explain why it is the way it is, never had any complaints. I'm sure it happens, it's in our nature to complain so Que Sera, Sera. You want to sing two in a row at my show? If it is at the very beginning of a slow night, no problem. Or if it is a celebrity (hasn't happened yet). Last night we had an amazing male singe show up. Did two songs, was the best male singer I've ever had at one of my shows. I actually had people wanting him to stay and do two in a row after his second song. He smiled and walked off the stage, I wouldn't have obliged, we had singers line up and my job is not to pizz singers off. But in this case most people wouldn't have complained. If I call someone up and I don't see them heading up within 10 seconds, I will call a second time. If they don't show up within 10 seconds, I bump them down a singer. Then after the next singer is done, I will call them once, and if I don't see them headed to the stage, I skip their turn and bump them to the bottom as the system would have had they sung. No one has complained yet so it's working for me. I'm sure we all get the bribers, I haven't given in yet. I only leave the room if I need a potty break (I no longer smoke and if I did, it's allowed at my current regular gig) and I have the singer tuned in and I'm confident I will be back before the end of the song. Yes, I have transition music but I want to ask for audience support at the end of each song sung. If you don't have a song for your next turn lined up by the time you are walking off the stage from singing your current song, I will delete you. I could leave it in but then it looks bad if your name shows up on my marquee (current singer plus 3) and then it disappears when I realize you don't have a song. Then if you bring me a slip or if you are a regular you can just come up and vocally give me your next song and I will place you back in the rotation. That hasn't been an issue either for my situation. On the subject of song slips, if you are a regular, I don't need one. If you are new or unfamiliar to me, I want a slip. Main reason is so I don't butcher your name or forget it before I need to place you in the rotation. My memory is about as long as Johnny's,,,, well never mind. Some of my regulars will approach me at the beginning of the night and ask me to que up their song history. No problem, just make sure you don't take more than 5 seconds or so to choose the song when you come up to sing. If I had long rotations like some of you, I would reconsider that to eliminate any type of delay but my rotations are usually only about 8 to 12 long at the bar I regularly host at. Only once that I can recall did I have more than a 20 singer rotation. If you don't know this about me yet, I'm not opposed to trying new things or change my mind or stance on things. So I like this forum as others have mentioned to see how other hosts handle their show and sometimes I've tweaked my approach.

With my people, I could never let someone sing two in a row. Sometimes I wish I could... we had the Broadway cast of Lord of the Rings stay at the hotel a month or so ago.. They were awesome.. not only great performers, but great audience! Was the first I ever heard Bohemian Rhapsody sung well! About 12 of them got on stage and hardly needed a mic, they projected so well..the harmonies etc were the best I've ever heard at karaoke (12-14 years anyway). But even with them, I didn't let two in a row.. just not fair. I do get long rotations.... rarely under 18, usually over 22... That night, they all signed up, so I had about 40! Sure was fun! Brooks & Dunn came to a show once also...but we couldn't get them out of their booth! They had just finished a concert though, so couldn't blame them for not wanting to put on a freebie!
