I still use books.... amazes me though, how someone will get a book then hand me a slip with a song on it that I've never heard of and don't have, only to find out that the song they wrote down was really part of the lyric of the song.... sheesh. Books are getting to be more and more useless. And that's fine.. I only have 6 now where I used to have 20! I'm very close to having my book online and only one or two printed. I don't take the time to explain anything to new singers. If they have a question, I'm there to answer.. I make myself very accessible.

Jerry, I glad to hear someone else has this problem too! I read the slip and think... 'yes, I have that song'.. type it in.. um, I don't have it. Then I think..WHAT is THAT song.. I know that song!! But, can't remember.. .so, I go back to the person and tell them... every so often we have to actually start singing the words before the title finally comes to mind!! This is one reason I ask them to put the artist on their slips! Damn if they can't remember the artist!!

We too have had people write just a portion of a lyric down so it comes in handy having internet access. I have a MiFi hot spot that we use at my show. When we get requests for something we don't have, we look it up online using KJPro or a lyrics site and then make a note to try to obtain the song.

Just this evening I got slips for:
"It's Amazing" by Alison Krauss (When You Say Nothing At All)
"Rollin' With The Flow" by Merle Haggard (Going Where The Lonely Go)
and a verbal request for:
"You know that one... Something about my shoulder" (Eddy Arnold's "Make The World Go Away")

Having a computer with WiFi is goo for that - type in the line with LYRICS in Google & it will usually bring up the song they want. I've had my books available online for years. Just recently within the last year or so it is available to search. Also have a couple of phone app books available as well & working on an in house kiosk although still debating whether I need it or not. I will however still always offer books to people like me that like to sit & go through a karaoke book while waiting my turn.

-Chris Posted my response before I saw this - BINGO! Quite helpful & makes the singer happy because we know what song to put up. I don't think i've had anyone write up Summer Nights as that, but 99% of the time it's either Tell Me More or Summer Lovin.

These use to be sung when I first started in 92. Except for When You Say Nothing At All, I have been lucky enough to not hear the other two for several years.

I have 2 simple rules at my show/s (when I do one), and I announce them over the Mic at the start of my show (and maybe one more time later in the night (when more people have arrived)).
1. Please applaud for every Singer that gets up to sing. For some, it takes a lot of courage to get up and Sing.... And at the Bar, we have (insert name/s here) serving up Liquid Courage for those that feel they need it... So make sure you take care of them too.
2. Do NOT hand me a song request slip which you wrote someone else's name on it, thinking they are going to sing. If they are not willing to get up, you are wasting my time, and the time of those who are waiting patiently for their turn to sing.
And, I have a special rule number 3 at one place (which the Bartender asked me to recite)....
3. Please keep the Women's Room clean.

And what I was talking about. I do have internet and do check the lyrics... but when they put four words there and no artist.. I have to ask which artist they mean. Too many songs with similar lyrics or even the same title but totally different songs and by different artists. Thing is.. if they would look in the book for the song.. and then if they can't remember the title or artist, they should come up and ask for help. Turning in a slip with minimal information on it, cost me time.

I don't think i've had anyone write up Summer Nights as that, but 99% of the time it's either Tell Me More or Summer Lovin. I've mentioned my customer DJ/Itunes collections, I have the lyrics for about 50% of my songs (all of my classic rock) and I just go to google and type in the name of the song and "lyrics". Usually 8 to 10 good sites will pop up although some make it difficult to copy and paste. There has been times when I didn't know a song and I knew a few of the words, just typed them in to google and the song shows up. Not in the case mentioned in the original post that I am replying to would this new method work but I have had Sound Hound for a year and a half now, great phone app that can not only name the song, artist and album but also pop up the lyrics and the lyrics will scroll in beat to the song, even if you turn the song off. My biggest beef regarding slips,,,,,, sloppy writing and those that don't look in my book before writing a song down and then walk away before I get a chance to put it in my system and discover I don't have it forcing me to go find them if I can remember what they look like. A few times I haven't been able to find them and I just wait til they come back up to complain that I haven't called them up. Then I let them know, don't pull a slip out of my book and then just write the song down without confirming it is in the book. I'm not a pirate and my library is limited.

Then there's always those that drop off a slip on my computer... while I'm not looking, for me to find... with NO NAME on it!! Then get upset at me because they haven't been called up. I will, however, usually wait until the current singer is finished.. applause quiets.. then announce, "whoever just dropped off a sign up, didn't put their name on it.. come see me please."

One says "Please don't jeer, heckle or otherwise interrupt the singer (unless it is John Doe)." The other says "Please wait to be invited to sing with someone else (unless it's Jack Doe)." I do recall John Doe and Jack Doe reading those guidelines and exclaiming happily, "Look, it says we are the only ones who are allowed to heckle and interrupt the singers!" We had actually intended the opposite. Upon further reading I was alarmed to see that we don't run our shows according to our own guidelines until I got to number 12 which says, "There are Exceptions to these rules at the KJ's discretion." Case closed.

I will, however, usually wait until the current singer is finished.. applause quiets.. then announce, "whoever just dropped off a sign up, didn't put their name on it.. come see me please." This is probably the MAIN reason I switched from sign-up slips to a kiosk. About a month before CH came out with the kiosk, I was hosting a particularly busy Saturday night show. I had all my slips entered in to CH and had discarded them into a small box right next to my computer. I hit the head during a 5+ minute song and came back to my set-up and continued on. About 15 minutes later, a guy comes up to me and asks where he and his friends are in the list. I asked him if he handed me a sign-up sheet and he simply said no and walked away. I thought that was weird. 5 minutes later, my assistant comes to me with this guy in tow and tries to tell me that this guy is upset because he signed up and I won't let him sing. Turns out that he had not signed up for a song himself, but had filled out 4 sign-up slips for his friends. He had put them in my discard pile when I was away and I hadn't seen them. I pulled them from the discard pile and immediately entered the songs/singers into the queue. The wait was already over half and hour and because of this mistake, the singers would probably have to wait a total of an hour to get their chance to sing. Fast forward ten minutes and someone comes by my setup, grabs the sign-up slips in question, tears them up, throws them at me and runs for the door. A couple of that persons group had some choice words for me as they left, saying that I don't know how to run a karaoke show... That did it for me. If it wasn't already a hassle enough to get songs requests that were illegible, incorrect, incomplete and anonymously tossed onto my setup, I don't take to well to being insulted and taunted. It was a no-brainer for me to eliminate sign up sheets.
