This is not a "favorite song" thread- it's a "best song to audition with" thread:

Here's the scenario: You're not young or old, you are simply at the prime of your singing voice, whenever that is.

You're at the pre-pre-audition for The Voice, as Bazza was. Your audition song has to be done with no mic, no effects, and a capella.

You must choose a song that best shows off your voice range, that is not built around it's music, and has enough juice to wow the judges.

You only get one shot at it.

What song do you choose to perform?

Interesting topic and a question I went over in my head many times. Some of the awesome songs you sing at the bar just sound monotonous and boring accapella. Try it. It's a different animal.

BTW I sang the Huey Lewis version of "It's alright". It just felt right for me.

I'll be doing something like this in July.

I first thought my bread and butter Journey but the time restraints doesn't allow me to hit the high part of the song I originally chose.
Likewise I am having issues with getting the cadence down to another song I chose for the competition's second verse.
I believe that the first verse minus the chorus is within the time restraint and the high part is in it so my choice is:
Shinedown's Second Chance.

Now I'm stuck with what to move into Shinedown's origional spot in my list of choices of songs.

"Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers

This one falls perfectly into my range, and is a great "singing song" with lots of dynamics and inflection, not to mention lots of soul and room for emotion!

Back in my band days, I used to sing this song as a solo playing just the bass guitar part coming back from our first break, and it was always a crowd favorite. It's really the only song I can play on bass start to finish!

So far, so good! Bazza, I quoted the above because THAT'S the biggest hurdle, I believe. Maybe balladers have a bit of an edge in terms of what they sing? If so, would they lose that edge in terms of wowing the judges?

I dunno- just thinking out loud....

....This question reminds me of last year's American Idol tryouts when Scotty McCreery used Josh Turner's "YOUR MAN" for all that it was worth and then some. Hey, it worked for him!

After going through the pre-process Bazza described, by the time I got to sing I would realize I didn't stand a chance of winning anything and would decide to have a little fun with it instead. I would switch from whatever I had planned and sing "It's Me Again Margaret". However, there's a good chance that's what I would plan to sing in the first place.

Trust me, finding good a capella songs can be tough! While musically I think "Music of the Night" showcases my voice very well, I'm not sure how well it would work without the backing. May be a bit too slow as well to find a good 90 second part.

Drift Away would probably be my best bet a capella. It's one I can get right into, and most of all, it's not one I see being used in auditions often. Judges love hearing "new" songs in the audition process. Hearing the same song 536 times during the process really gets tiring and the judges are less likely to put someone through unless they are wowed by the singer.

(and that number is not random. That's how many times "Rolling In the Deep" was sung in the Canada's Got Talent auditions. In other words, try to avoid the really popular songs)
