HA, I do have 1 guy that is very vocal about that. If it's too busy he complains he can't sing alot, if it's too slow, he complains no one is there. He wants it full bar, but few singers so they can hear him and oh yeah the crowd HAS to be responsive with applause. Funny thing is this guy cannot sing very well. Entertaining to watch, but man!

From a singer's stand point, I have no problem with a slow night, cause I get to sing more. The nights where you can only sing two songs kind of suck.

I know and I think most that like to sing feels the same way, this guy just bitches that either it's too busy to sing or too slow to be appreciated - then often whines about not being able to try out new songs because it's too busy, but won't stay on slow nights to practice new songs - what a moron!

Slow nights are the best nights to try new stuff. Those can be fun nights, as a host, too, because they can be more intimate, unless you just have a bunch of drunks sitting at the bar, not participating.

The people that are over apologetic about a bad performance, both over the mic and to me. This is not American Idol, I don't care, now can you get off the stage so the next singer can get up here?

Worse yet the ones that sang great, and act like they sang so poorly, so they get everyone saying how good they sounded...

Or the ones who sing songs like "Bodies" from Drowning Pool, and start screaming into the mic, and redlining the system even though you have them down to halfway.

Ah that's where compressors and limiter come into play! When I know those songs are coming on I automatically turn the threshold and ratio up a little and that usually does the trick.

My system is on wheels. I can't tell you how many times drunk people have tried lean on it when they come up to sing. Or were so drunk that they hit it while thrashing around. I feel like a football player protecting the quarterback when that happens. I have to stand in front with my arms up and block them.

My #1.

"Can you move my friend up next, cause we really have to leave"

Soooooo you want me to p1ss everyone else off so you can leave me alone with them? I don't think so.

I usually reply "Well if you have to go, then go!". Funny how they are usually all still there an hour later.

Worst excuse I got was, Can I go next I really have to leave, my babysitter just called and said there is emergency!!
Me - Oh really sorry to hear that, i'll hand you slip for next time since I wouldn't be able to get you up for at least 3 more songs, but you should go tend to your child.

Still there at closing time, guess the emergency took care of itself, and I don't think she realized that I had pulled her from rotation - nor did she ask me about it!

This is why I love my wireless mics.. they stay on my table. People are so ... stupid (for lack of a better word), that even when the are allowed the mic, I have to tell them EVERY time to turn the mic on!

Just love the ones that say... 'you've heard my voice, what would you recommend I sing?'
I want to tell them... "Ummmm...Well, I think you shouldn't sing!"

I could have some fun with that one. "I think you should sing this..." and give him something like LOve Hurts or Run to the Hills.

- Singers with good voices that only sing the same seven or so songs

This x100! At one of the bars I used to frequent, one person there stuck to the same three songs every night for several months (and they went to the bar twice a week). I never thought I'd grow tired of a song quicker than I did with "Picture" back in the day, but this person managed to prove me otherwise.

Although I'm just a singer, I do see so many people mistreat the equipment (grrrrr) and try to switch up their songs last minute. I'll admit that I have been known to switch my tunes, but I usually manage to do it well before my rotation. When the host is already putting in the CD for my song though, I'll stick with what was on the sheet.

From a singer's point of view though, one of the things that drives me bonkers is when a KJ won't get a disc replaced that badly needs it, even after repeated playbacks. The CD+G players i generally see here usually just start skipping ahead in the track (no lockups), but it's still (obviously) annoying. If it's the first time playing a disc and it glitches, I understand - but if it's a known problem disc....... (on that note though, is it fair for a KJ to tell a singer that the disc is faulty and they can't play the song?)

It is fair....but as soon as that KJ reprints their books they should probably take that song or disc out of the book unless they can replace it. Sometimes the song/disc is irreplaceable... and that sucks. But, as a KJ... the background work that goes with this job can be astronomical.. when I get home from a gig, I am drained and don't want to even think about karaoke! However, I do keep a list of things that need to be done... replacing songs etc. So, while yes, is it fair for the KJ to say they can't play that song... and they are sorry that the books haven't reflected the change yet. (I used to take a sharpie and blackout songs that were unusable.. and a few that the venue deemed offensive :) ) It's a bummer when a song you wanted to sing and thought was available, turns out not to be so... but it happens. Our books are written and printed by ourselves... a thankless job and most do the best they can.

I just tell them what you SHOULD sing & what you actually know is two completely different questions? Most will end up either looking through a book or just tell me - ok this song. The other few will tell me well I listen to so & so, when I mention a song from them, oh no I couldn't that one. Well then quit asking what I think you should sing.

I have never had a problem with this for the only reason if they were changing up the style or going more with the flow and not doing something really off the wall.

I hate this too and have a clipboard for my hosts to write down ANY problems with discs and/or equipment so I can at least see if it's fixable or needs replacing.

Same here... If I have a problem with one of my discs at a show, I will write myself a note about it immediately, and then inspect it on my other player at home (to see if it's a problem my my machine or the disc). So far, I haven't had a problem with my machine, so when I encounter a bad disc, I try to replace it with the same brand as before.
