The point of give and take, and making time to listen and comment as much as you sub is a good one and one worth striving for. But to me this is starting to feel all pressured and "conditional", like a vending machine or something. Where I only "get" exactly what I'm able to "give"? I think it could all work out if we just let it happen naturally.
Somedays I'm able to listen and comment and "give" a lot. But there's times I can only sub. Does that mean I get "punished" that week by not "getting" anything back? And what if I really don't like someone's song? Do I have to go over there and lie cuz they liked mine? Why can't we just let it flow and just be ourselves? I think it'll all come out evenly in the wash if we just let it. But this feels too much like keeping score and that's too strenuous and stressful for something that's supposed to be fun.

hey tigger I totally agree... I responded longwindedly (vented really) over on the thread "I just had a brainstorm" on this subject and ratings and I will avoid repeating it here... I have quit listening to subs totally because of this demand to make comments or you won't play with my toys because I won't play with your toys mentality... mom she is touching me... childish eh??? keep on singing- tig

I can understand why you've quit listening to subs...I've got enough pressure in the outside world. I want to have fun here.
Another thing I've wondered about with the completely even tit for tat thing is then how do I know who's listening to my subs because they want to and really like it, not just because they "owe" me and need to make sure I'm giving to them next time.

I guess it doesn't matter if it is honest or not but more important that you comment for some weird reason... I swear if William Hung subbed songs here he would get all 10's and raving comments on how good it is- it doesn't make sense... of course he would then be obligated to rate and make comments on everyone else so I guess it evens out in the end...-tig

I don't think anybody is obligated here.... I think it is up to each individual and what they want to do. I see quite a few regular submitters who are perfectly happy to submit a song and rarely comment... they don't get many comments ... but I'm sure they don't really care. I am guilty of commenting quite often... does that make me some kind of bad person? Or a liar? I truly enjoy the experience... if I didn't... believe me.. I wouldn't be here! The day it becomes a chore is the day it stops for me! I guess part of my reason for being here is the people... and the friendships... that is what is addicting... I believe that is the case for most people. If I just wanted to hear a great singer... I could go down and buy myself a CD... I find it a great thing to get to know the people who are singing their hearts out... and what makes them tick... and commenting is part of getting to know someone! We all share a common bond... and we learn a lot from each other! I'm not here to judge or say this sucked... or slap a number on their hard work.. If I got to know William Hung I would probably like the guy and pat him on the back for his efforts! We all have ears and know who can do what... and appreciate them for it! I have a heck of a time sleeping at night so this place gives me a place to relax and unwind ... and maybe it's a bit of loneliness too.... I sure don't comment on songs just to GET comments... but... that is the nice thing that does happen as a result... people want to return the favor... but I wouldn't be upset if they didn't... I would still comment on them! BUT.. I guess I would sort of lose interest in someone who never responded to my comments or commented back... that's just human nature. So... it's up to you what you want out of this site and the experience you have here... as it is anywhere in life!

Sheree, but HOW do you know who comments on yours and who doesn't? There's so many people who comment, and it's always changing, that how could someone notice someone who doesn't? That almost sounds like someone's keeping tabs, keeping score; and why?? (not saying you do that.) Maybe whoever doesn't comment has just missed your subs because of timing somehow. It has taken me weeks to notice some singers that somehow I just kept missing.
Where and how did this keeping track start? Maybe the person who's not listening doesn't like my singing or your singing. In that case, I don't want them to come and lie to me just so that I'll listen to them. Why should I expect them to be tormented like that? But if I like their singing, I am free to listen and comment on theirs. Why does this have to be so complicated?

it is the whole mentality that has been shown that if you sub a song and someone comments on your song that it is expected for you to listen to theirs and make a comment I know you said it doesn't bother you that sometimes people don't make comments on your subs but there are plenty on here who do take it personal if someone doesn't comment... I ask the same question you did- what the heck is the big deal??? comments are fine as long as you keep a steady supply of grains of salt as you read them ... when people sign up to this site they need to be handed two sets of rules- those required by the site and those unwritten rules that seem to cause the biggest friction... I, for one, will not sub anything further and have quit listening to any subs because of this obsession... trust me- it is my loss as I had discovered some very talented singers... oh and i am not the only one- look around- how many other people have just dropped off the radar lately but not said anything??? something to think about...-tig

I guess I have missed the obsession part.... but I miss a lot of stuff.. as for people who have left.... that's up to them I guess... new people will come and old people will go .... it's all a part of the internet! The one's who leave will find what they are looking for elsewhere I'm sure! There are plenty of sites out there... something for everyone! I just left a site because nobody seems to be very active or interested... so that is the other side of the coin. If nobody listens... why bother!

somehow i think that the common courtesy that most of us feel that we want to return to others on this site has been construed as being an obsession of some kind. if someone has been kind enough to listen and comment on one of my subs, i try to return the favor--that's all. we're all busy, we all have "real" lives, and i can't imagine that anyone here has the time to listen to subs every day. i try to do my best, not because of pressure from anyone, but because i enjoy hearing all the great talent around here and because i do want the people who take the time to listen to me to know that i appreciate it by taking the time to listen to them when i can. i've never been aware of any unwritten "rules"--only a sense of doing what i feel is the right thing to do (which is my loss that i can't do as often as i would like to.)

Here is my day (Usually)...
I spend 5-6 hours of my day in a recording studio/or rehearsing live...
1-3 hours a day in a artist management agency...
1-2 doing my OWN promotions...
Some days...Attend a 2 hour meeting on music row regarding a music purchase with another exec. from label management.
Maybe I have time when I go home to spend qulity time with My New Wife.
Then Record 1 Song to Sub if I am still up to it. and get to bed so I can function the next day...
Tell me if I have time to listen to 15 songs and comment on them..
Yeah right...
REALITY CHECK!!! I have a life too folks...

I would LOVE to be able to hear every single submission.... but they fly by too darn fast:) I don't "expect" people to comment on mine, simply because I commented on theirs, and I don't do the same for the same reason. I want people to WANT to listen to me.. and not simply because I took 5 minutes out of my day to listen and comment on theirs.
I am a stay at home mommy, and now that my husband went back to school, he gets home MUCH later, and studies allll night. My kiddo would kill me if I spent all day sitting on the couch with headphones on, trying to listen to music. I have about ONE hour everyday, at lunch time, (for Skylah) when "Caillou" comes on (her alloted show:) when I can try to listen to songs I love, and voices I adore, and trying to hear people I had never heard before..... but, there is no way I can fit everyone in that I want to, into that time... I feel guilty, being on the computer, when I should be cleaning playdoh off of the ceiling, or sewing her dolls head back on. I don't want people to feel the same way, and take time out of their day, where they should be doing something else, simply to listen to me. I can't even really RECORD anymore, so, I haven't anything new to post.... and, then, I mainly submit, because I want a chance to say hi to people, because I am lonely, with my home half way across canada.
I thank anyone who every comments on me, simply because I know how hard it is to be able to do so, and it really means alot. Lol, if you don't have time to listen, I would be happy with a "hey, how are ya", because I know that listening to me can be tiresome:)
And I agree,
This is way better than the radio, or music channel... and I don't have time for THOSE either:)

This is what I normally do when I listen to subs:
when I decide to listen (usually first thing in the morning at work or first thing after lucnh), I start at the top. I listen to about 5 or 10 subs, and comment on each of them.
Then I look for things that catch my eye....like tpeterson singing Nirvana, or if someone sings a song that I really enjoy.
Then, I look for my favorites, or people that have commented on my song, and I have not commented on theirs yet.....or people who I have not listened to in awhile.
That way, at least I get some new listens in, can hear some of my favorites, and by that time, there are a whole bunch of new songs up....to start again when I want to listen.
That way, I feel like I am at least spreading myself around...

OK Folks, time to kill AllStar!
How about this! Let's just cut all this politically correct BS! For the love of God,
If you can reply, do it! If not, then don't. If you can listen and comment, do it! If not, then don't.
If you never listen to my sub, don't expect me to listen to yours! Simple, isn't it

But I already do that to you ALLSTAR!
I agree if you don't have the time, which I fully can understand, then don't. No one is saying that you have to. It is just nice if you do.

Ok, but what if I listen to EVERY sub you put in Allstart but don't comment? You going to listen to mine? How do you know I'm listening to yours for real? Maybe I'm only saying I am and reaping the benefits of fooling you.
When I posted the first time a couple people commented. I made it a point to go and listen to their submissions and comment because they were kind enough to listen and comment with my doing so in kind. It was only after I started listening to everyone else that I realized I sucked and everyone else was great. I should be getting less than 1's and giving 11's.
What sucks is that now that I'm moved and was feeling better I now have dental problems... won't someone just shoot me?
