....Recently did some updating to libray (new rips, re-ripping old ones and some file name editing) and now am ready to print new books. Does anybody know of a good place for printing?

When I used to print books, I created a PDF file and went to Office Depot. They printed and spiral bound it for me for around $20 book. Cover and last page laminated.

Indeed... Haven't used books for almost 3 years now. So it would be more like $30 per book now. That's $300 for 10 books... time to go Kiosk IMHO.

In the past year, my books have gone from about 10 dollars and change.. to just under $12... to over $14... with the last set a little over $17 per. I supply the covers. They do the printing, laminating the covers, and spiral binding. (232 sides... 116 pages).

I just chalk it up to the cost of doing business.

I print my own....

The HP laser printer, cartridge (does 1500 pages+), and a ream of paper for under $100.

Next time only the paper and a cartridge under $30.

Last time I printed, Staples was the cheapest. I forget how much, but out of the mom&pop and chain stores, Staples was cheap.

I just printed new books for the new show I picked up. It was ~$300 for 8 books. I have color on the first 4 pages (I put copies of all of my certificates in the front pages) and those are all laminated as well as the back cover. The color and the lamination really drove the price up.

I will try to remember to take a pictire of the books at tonight's show to post up what they look like.

Sorry....feeling a little whiplash here from the lightning fast change in ethics in this thread....

Let me get this straight...

Stealing music......bad

Stealing paper, toner and office resources from the people who went out of their way to employ you (or your spouse).......not only perfectly acceptable, but a downright crafty, money-saving idea?

Priceless.

It makes me wonder how many of the people who don't pay to print their books actually report their income, since you could easily write off the printing expense as a business expense off of your taxes. You would think you'd WANT to claim that expense. Hmmmm.

I was thinking the exact same thing!
Books can be expensive. When my book got too large for the 1 1/2" binder, I just printed less books in a bigger binder. I stopped putting them on the tables too. They're on the side of the stage, only 6 of them. AND now, they don't get wrecked as much... I don't really know why, maybe because the customer had to put an effort into getting a book so he/she takes better care of it? :lol:

6 binders- $42
175 pages =/- (both sides printed) - approx. $6
Ink jet, (refilled $10 per cartridge) - $20 (going high here)
Page protectors ($.02ea x 6) - $10.56
Total= $78.56 (a tad over $13 per book)

Time spent printing and stuffing... Um.. priceless!! :lol:

I buy printer paper by the case and shop around for cheap. I buy the page protectors online by the case also. And I refill the inkjet cartridges... for every 10 I get one filled free. :) I do buy high quality binders.. doesn't make sense to buy inferior and have them fall apart in a month.

I'm with Lone Wolf- I do it myself.

In my case it's fairly costly, but The sheer quality and durability of the books actually saves money in the long run.

I discovered that my local Staples will give me a deal on their best binders if I buy by the case. Normally around $9, I pay almost half price. I think the unpopular color (Chartreuse, of course) may help.

200 page protectors at around $11 bucks ( 2 pages per, 2 sided).

I use refurb ink jet cartridges at around $10 each, getting maybe 2 1/2 books out of each in draft mode.

50 self stick vinyl pouches are around $6, 1 per book for slips.

I use a blow-up of one of my cards for a cover that slips under the vinyl binder protector.

It comes to a little over $20 bucks per book, not including the sweat equity of assembly. Maybe $30 total?

However, the physical books can last into a second year looking pretty good.

Reprints can be done using the same books AND protectors for only the cost of ink, paper, and the extra pages of protectors.

In the long run they actually save money. Reprinting a spiral bound has to be done from scratch. Cardboard covers- even laminated- don't look as good for as long- or last as long. Cheaper binders come apart at the fold, or the rings start to open with the result of pages falling out.

Joe is correct... the lamented spiral bound books may look good the first night..but one drink spilled and its ruined. I too, reuse the page protectors, until the rings pull through :) I found canvas pouches at Office Depot for the slips and pencils.. they were about $4 each with metal reinforced ring holes and real metal zippers, not cheap, but they've been in my books for almost 2 years now and not one shows signs of wear 'n tear. I got sick of replacing the vinyl ones, they were always ripping through or the zip lock stopped working.
I figure each book costs me about $30-$35 with the labor initially, but subsequent books are less expensive because I don't have to replace all the page protectors or the slip pouches. The more expensive binders last longer also.
I also, put a title page on the front of the binder.. and use packing tape to seal the top edge closed so that liquid doesn't get in there and ruin it. I sometimes will use packing tape to reinforce the edge of the binder also... takes a little more time, but if done when they're new, it seems to help the binder last longer.

....Last couple of years I've done them myself. Had to buy extra plastic page protectors, bigger binders and more ink. Already had the paper. However, it's the ink that kills me! Did find some good deals on some CD Envelopes in bulk. Just hard to find a good deal on printing services. Don't mind putting the books together.

You really might want to consider a kiosk.

Ours was put together on an old desktop computer somebody threw away. Here were the one-time costs:

Cost of touch screen monitor: $70
Cost of software: $170
Cost of computer: ZERO
Cost of cart: $35

Total cost: $275

Cost of updating: ZERO
Cost of paper: ZERO
Cost of pencils: ZERO
Cost of sheet protectors: ZERO
Cost of ink cartridges: ZERO
Cost to employer: ZERO
Time you need to spend stuffing pages into new books: ZERO
Cost of request slips: ZERO

Updates are instant.

....I've heard others mentioning kiosk and smart phones here and there. However, I don't know where to start and what I need to do in order to set it up. It's untraveled land for me. But sounds interesting. One of the guys that helps me said we could just get them to text in there requests through our phones. I said, "Cool idea, but I don't think so."

Bird.......... get ready for it......... I agree with you about the using the boss's paper, toner and electricity. My boss would probably say go ahead but why should he pay for my OTHER BUSINESS expenses.

The other big thing is it's labour intensive. I prefer to drop off the disc and pick up the printed matter.
