Question: If you want to do the last name first format, how would you do Harry Connick, Jr.? Connick, Jr., Harry? or Connick, Harry Jr.
I think the second.. but in the real name... 'Jr.' is not after 'Harry', it's after 'Connick'... ummm?

Back when people actully understood how to look up a name by last name like in a library, I would list the name like Harry Connick Jr - but it would alphabetize under Connick.
Seems younger people don't understand this concept & had to start listing them last name, first name.
I would put Jr at the end of the last name. Connick Jr., Harry

I used to list my book in order of first name... made it so much easier. The only time there was a comma in there was for "The" and "A" Beatles, The Harry Connick Jr. .. find it in the H's. I'm really sorry I switched it. Now we've got too many like "Smith, Will, w/Pitbull, T-Pain & Justin Timberlake" confusing. *and this is not a real artist listing

I would say The Beatles. Or just take "the" out.

I just take the "The" out as well now. I tried one time to list by first name - oddly enough had the most complaints about the books that I ever had. Usually do a reprint once a year, that year I did a full reprint after 5 months.

According the the MLA style of composition.. "Putting people's names in alphabetical order is done on a letter-by-letter basis. Omit titles (such as Lady, Sir, Sister), degrees (M.D., Ph.D.), etc., that precede or follow names. A suffix that is an essential part of the name — such as Jr., Sr., or a roman numeral — appears after the given name, preceded by a comma. (Ford, Henry J., III or Pepin, Theophilus, Jr.)" So that would be: Connick, Harry, Jr. Williams, Hank, Jr. I wasn't putting a comma after the given name: Connick, Harry Jr. I should just go back to my old way.. didn't take as much thinking!!

I leave in the "The" ... for things like The Charlie Daniels Band, so it reads: Charlie Daniels Band, The If I left off the "The", I think I'd have to do this: Daniels Band, Charlie ??

I have it as Connick Jr., Harry in my data base. It appears that way if I print last name first, or Harry Connick Jr. if I want to print first name first.

Your program prints it that way automatically? Connick, Jr., Harry? Makes sense.. I was pretty sure I was taught differently WAY back in high school

Only one comma, not two... Connick Jr., Harry. Otherwise if theres two and print first name first it appears Harry Connick, Jr., I like it just Harry Connick Jr.. I think when I got CB6000 I changed how they had all there Jr's...

In this case if it's a 'band' I will list it as Charlie Daniels Band and list it under Charlie - since that is the name of the band, it isn't his solo stuff technically. Steve Miller Band, Eli Young Band, etc. they all get listed as if it were listing Led Zeppelin. What makes me laugh is when kj's list Lynyrd Skynyrd as Skynyrd, Lynyrd. It's not a persons name, it is a band name. Molly Hatchet, Harvey Danger is another that I can think of right off hand.

Lonnie even though Van is a Dutch surname in some cases, Van in Ricky's case is his middle name. It should be listed Shelton, Ricky Van.

I believe that the Jr. is usually listed last, regardless of how the name is listed (ie. Williams, Hank Jr or as Hank Williams Jr). Among family and friends he would be known as Hank Jr not Williams Jr. In most cases the designation of Jr or Sr is not actually part of the name but simply a way to differentiate between the son who has the same given (first) name as his father. Otherwise, using the last name, even if you had six sons, they'd all be Jr, talk about confusing.
I just checked and the major songbooks list it as:
Williams, Hank (Sr) Williams, Hank Jr Williams, Hank III
It's the given name that's the multiplier not the family name.

Jon I stand corrected. However most Vans are part of the last name and for simplicity matter where most would look, I'll probably keep him listed under Van

I think the grey area lies in whether the name included in the band's name is the actual name of an artist or a fictitious name that identifies the group.
Judas Priest comes to mind. They took their name from a Bob Dylan song: "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest" according to Wiki.
Apparently it is a proper name, but not in this context.
Zac Brown and Dave Matthews are the actual artists' names.
Their listings appear under their last name:
Brown, Zac, Band Matthews, Dave, Band
I list them that way because it also keeps their solo work adjacent in the book. When someone asks me if I have any Tom Petty, I tell them to look under Petty because that is where they will find both Petty, Tom and Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers.
