A local KJ claims to be legal yet he's told me and others that he doesn't own a single disc. His last story to a friend of mine was the he purchased a license from, get this BMI, giving him permission to play all of his mp3+g's. What a crock...LOL.

This guy pisses me off, I know he's given at least one drive to another guy is also now hosting karaoke in our area. If I were to try and start hosting with no experience, or following etc... I may be hard pressed to compete against the more songs = better mentality of uneducated mgrs and venue owners.

I know for a fact he has SC8125 listed in his book and wanted to look for other OOP disks in his library. I'm not looking to create a complete OOP disk list, just a good list of some that I know he won't be able to run out and buy.

Yep BMI doesn't sell licenses to dj/kj's. He's stating that to make it sound like he's above the board. It's the ones that actually believe it are the idiots.
I don't know of any actual list out there of OOP discs. It varies from day to day and as to whether someone could actually still get hold of one either used or new left over in some retailers warehouse.

How about disks that are known to be rare or hard to find or those that would normally sell above their original retail price?

Again I couldn't tell you an exact list. Half of Sound Choice library - including 8125, 8148, 8195.
Alot of Chartbuster - any disc with Garth Brooks on it is supposedly OOP now.
DK
Music Maestro
Top Hits Monthly

It would be almost a full karaoke sized book to list each disc separately.

one of the bars i play in pays the BMI liscense fee, pretty much the same thing as ASCAP liscense..... just a different company that liscenses different artists, and only covers the music not the karaoke.

Thanks for the replies.

He does currently list SC8125, SC8148, SC8195, DK 1-99. Sometime back I I had approached him about possibly buying any duplicates he might have had, and he told me personally that he doesn't own any disks.

The BMI license line of BS is what he told a friend of mine when he asked him how he was able to play mp3+g's without being certified by SC or CB.

Sounds like what we have going on down here in So. Texas. I think their mind set dates back to the days of cattle rustling.

This is false.

This is false.

Both ASCAP and BMI cover karaoke.
They both clearly say so on their own websites:

ASCAP
http://www.ascap.com/~/media/Files/Pdf/ ... es/BGT.pdf
Quote:
Enhancements to Recorded Music (Line 3). This fee applies for the use of added features to recorded music such as, but not limited to, karaoke, DJs, emcees, dancing, shows, acts or games.
Notice it specifically includes karaoke as a covered activity.
http://www.ascap.com/ace/search.cfm?requesttimeout=300
Here you can type in an artist or song and find the works that are covered by ASCAP for you to play. Try searching for The Eagles and you will get a complete list of what they cover.

BMI
http://www.bmi.com/news/entry/234325
Quote:
Those organizations that represent songwriters around the world (there are three companies in the U.S.) provide license agreements to business owners where karaoke is presented. Only the businesses where music is played are licensed by BMI. There is no BMI license required for KJs. Such agreements come in the form of annual blanket licenses, granting permission for all songs represented by that organization to be performed. BMI offers licenses covering about half the music performed in the United States, a repertoire of approximately 4.5 million works from around the world

ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC do not license KJs or other performers directly. They license the venues KJs and other performers perform in, that's what covers the public performance of the music.

I guess that's what I meant... they don't issue to KJ's, the venue pays it and that covers all media entertainment. (I never really thought about a KJ getting their own ASCAP or BMI coverage... ?)

A few years back we had a two night/week gig where the owner stopped paying his ASCAP. ASCAP actually called our office and asked if we played there, because the venue had told them they no longer had entertainment of any sort. (such a lie). Well, we told ascap that yes we were playing there... but the very next week the venue called us and said they were cancelling us. The very next day, ascap called our office again and we had to tell them that, yes it was true that we'd lost the job. We weren't too happy about it either since we'd been there over 10 years. Well, guess what.. as soon as the venue was off ascap's radar... they called and hired us back! But, we no longer have that job.. the venue was so worried about money, they hired an illegal KJ who had crappy equipment... and didn't know squat about running the equipment. Fifty bucks a night! Two years ago the bar really did cancel all entertainment. They close at 10pm now.
Dang, we used to rock that place.. 4 deep at the bar and standing room only. Owner killed his business over something like $40/month. Then of course, trying to save money on the KJ.. final blow.

Ya know how dr. offices and other places, play music when they put you on hold? They are supposed to pay ascap also. Wonder how many don't.

Oh and I guess technically, they would issue to KJ's.. just not the norm. The venue is usually held responsible for the media entertainment in their establishments. Though from what I read.. the KJ or DJ could still be held liable by law. There's the grey area.. again.

Only time they would issue to kj's is if they are doing a show they are sponsoring/.

If a KJ was to do a public charity benefit for free or pay at a venue with no PRO license would they then be required to contact ASCAP & BMI?
