Montgomery Gentry is not a proper name or someones name in the band, it is a band name. It should list
Montgomery Gentry
in any listing. I see it listed as Gentry, Montgomery all the time in karaoke books.

I made that mistake long ago, LOL. Now if I have any question whether it is a band or single artist or even the proper title of a song, I will go to the official home page of the artist or if desperate, Wiki, LOL.

@ Lisah, I've done it first last since the beginning. I have removed all ", The" and ", A" and also replaced all "And" with "&". I removed all "-" dashes and "." periods from initials "A.J." becomes AJ. "Wishin' and Hopin'" becomes Wishin & Hopin. I also removed any in parenthesis.

With the duets I make all the duets full names and the same singer is always first.

This is exactly how our book was from the time when it was typed using Wordpad! LOL

Our book read as follows:

Hey Jude...................................12-A-14.........................Beatles
Wishin & Hopin...........................4-B-12.........................Dusty Springfield

What a pain that was!! But easier than a typewriter! We didn't have the 'By Artist' book back then!! I wasn't the first one to type it either. BUT I was the one that put it into Excel. Long time typin' there! At least I didn't have to alphabetize manually!

Back then most KJ's had their books made up of photocopies of the disc covers, or just odd pages with the songs/artists in order of date added. Ours was high-tech!! lol

A nice post above, but you did not mention one common problem: names that include a dash, i.e., Jay-Z. A dash in a name is construed as a field separator and you will find if you do not remove the dash, your data in the search engine will not be in the right place and will shift one data field to the right because of the dash --- i.e., Jay will be in the artist name field and Z will be in the title field! lol You can just leave a space where the dash is, or use a tilde (~).... Everybody has their own way of doing it, but you have to remember to keep it simple so your singers can find the artists in your song books!

I believe most programs use space-dash-space as the separator, so you can get away with dashes.

This thread is a perfect example of why most karaoke books can be difficult to navigate.

Lack of consistency.

Very true!! The worst ones I've ever seen though, were the ones with photocopies of the discs in them!! Geez.. talk about lazy! The guy would sharpie the disc number on the disc, scan the disc and put the pic in the book. Not ever ever taking the time to make an actual list. I think he went out of business... wonder why.. he got caught in the walk-in of one bar where he had a gig...and he had no teeth & a straggly beard , which makes me wonder how he got any work at all..was scary lookin
