Trust me, it ain't ALL old folks down here. The places I hang at range in ages from early 20's to mid 50's. Only two or three seniors, ever. Oldest guy I have seen is this guy Ralph. He was 85 and used to come out ever week. Now his health is failing so he's backed off.

Even did some choreograph dancing on stage. Let me put it this way, the oldest song that was sung the entire night was Journey's Don't Stop Believin'. Every other song landed squarely in the late 80's and forward time frame. I would have played it for him because I like the song, but I don't know how the crowd would have reacted. -Chris

If it touches one person, job well done. You would be surprised how many young people know those old songs. I never worry about what gets sung. It's all about the fun.

You cannot be afraif to let anyone do anything, that is what karaoke is about. We can go from someone doing Frank Sinatra, to someone doing Pantera the next song, then to TOny Orlando to Megadeth. That's the best thing about karaoke, people shouldn't be afraid to limit their selection to cator to anyone. Now some do do this on their own if it's a dancing crowd, they'll change their song to something danceable, if it's a ballad hell night - they may switch it up to something updbeat (or the otherway around).

Don't know if you heard, but Tony Iommi is being treated for Lymphoma. He got diagnosed a couple of months ago. Hopefully he gets through this so the reunion can go on. I know the rest of the band has gone to England to do the album. Bill Ward has decided not to go ahead with the reunion, though.

I am definitely consider myself a singer's host. I am glad he didn't sing it, because I didn't think the crowd would have liked it. I didn't think the mood was right. But it was their choice. I would have played it if they stuck with it. That denial of Rappers Delight is the first time I have ever asked anyone to choose anything else.

-Chris Well, a 14 minute song is a bit much to ask, especially towards the end of the night. But War Pigs should be welcome NO MATTER what!!! Ozzy is the FATHER of Heavy Metal and should be treated as such!! Anyone who doesn't like it can go scratch!!

I just did Hotel California tonight. It clocks at 6:48 for the SC version, however there is only 4:43 of singing time, the rest of the 2 minutes is musical outro. So would this fit in with a place that banned anything over 5 minutes? Just fade out the ending (as I do) and get the next singer up. As far as Rappers Delight, there is not a 14 minute karaoke version of that. 7:21 is the longest i've seen, and even that one has like a minute of instrumental at the end that could be faded out.

I carry it in my book for just that reason (Supercore version, not too bad). Blues Man is another example of that. The long version of Can't You See? Nope, but there is a short version by Chartbuster which I have. Neither song would survive my over-6-minute ban otherwise....

I just checked my rips of Rapper's Delight. I have the SC7586 and SC8760 versions. Both have a song time of 7:06. I guess I added them together for 14 mins in the heat of the moment. It was a crazy busy night.

What about Disco Inferno? It would be a good song to do after War Pigs.
Where's Swingcat?

The problem is.. the longest karaoke song available.. or the longest... that someone can propose in a venue?
I begin with the second point... I think that if you have a lot of people that wants to sing... it's a question of respect avoid that a turn can overcome 5-6 minutes.. with some exception... (you have to feel the people to understand if they're ready to accept to wait some more.. to hear all the song...) But the problem can be avoided, with a turn sharing. If three people together wants to sings rapper's delight... using their turn... it's ok. Other guys waiting ... will know that the alternative could be wait for 3 songs instead of a long one.
About the longest karaoke song in my archive.. and.. most of all.. not because 10 minutes instrumental, it's not a commercial one. I did it by myself starting from a good midi and converting it. It's Genesis's "Supper's Ready" about 20 minutes long

(you have to feel the people to understand if they're ready to accept to wait some more.. to hear all the song...) I wouldn't have a problem with one long song. My problem is that the people who pick long songs tend to pick *all* long songs. Which means they have double the stage time of other people. To top it off, many are poor singers, and they aren't going to improve their performance by choosing that song, either. So I have amended my computer to take away some of the go-to songs for these people. Maybe if you have been around karaoke long enough you have heard a stunning rendition of Scenes from an Italian Restaurant or American Pie, but I bet that there are a dozen truly rancid performances for every one good one. If I don't have Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in my library, it should be like any other song -- I might not have it.

sure I agree with you and.. however.. usually.. people don't want to wait a lot and allow others to take the stage for 20 minutes... it's true.. too that.. many times... people that choose those songs are bad singers too ("bad" could be not enough to define them well)

I have removed all my songs out their manu's folders and sorted them by length in win7. All songs over 5 min (taking into consideration SC 10 sec start and 6 sec end, etc) I move to a fold named "TooLong". I still have all the songs, but they are not in my song books, and they can be found in Karma under "TooLong" catagory. A few people have been upset by this, but way more have applauded my decision, and as

Exactly. The original by the Sugar Hill gang was 14 minutes, but it had a lot of instrumental breakdowns, etc as it was a 12". The song can go over very well IF you have two or three people trading lines like the original AND...they can actually rap! It gets bad fast when one person tries to pull it off and they have never rapped before. Then it's horrendous. I feel the same for Baby Got Back. People don't realize how difficult rap is to do until they try, then half way through the song they are giving you that "OMG...What have I done!" panic look.

Full length/long outros often push these songs over that time - in which you just fade out the song once the lyrics are finished - no harm no foul, don't lose a great song & it doesn't go over your alloted time limit.

Yes Lonman, I agree with you there. I have made exceptions because of that and moved them back into the "allowed" selection.
How many songs do you get through an hour on an average. I get at least 60 songs in 3 hours (my shows are 7-10 or so). I frequently run over to 11 or beyond for tip money. I can make more the last hour than I do the previous 3 hours. If I go to 11 I will get about 80 songs sung.
