Someone likes the 'certified KJ' program and someone doesn't. OH WELL! Lisah some could and probably did think the same thing about this. Lisah wrote: Mr. Harrington, I'm curious, if I sign the SC agreement and get certified but still get named in a suit ... do I have to go to NC to defend myself?
Also, if there's any part of the SC we don't agree to, is there any other way to get SC to allow us to media shift the SC discs that we own? ... A lot of the nit picking going on is dealing with certain aspects of the audit that individuals aren't comfortable with or think is unfair. I see no harm in discussing or debating their views. I'm not sure why SC decided to remove the "Forum Selection and Choice of Laws" from their CNS, but I am pretty sure it wasn't because no one took issue with it or did and didn't voice their opinion. I actually enjoy reading peoples opinion and getting their view point. Even if I don't agree with it or it's consistent. It's the drive by posts and cheap shots I see that add nothing to the conversation that get annoying.

You would be correct about that. It was brought to my attention; we reviewed it and determined it shouldn't be in there; and it was removed. I think this illustrates (part of) the reason why I'm here--to listen to the industry and, where appropriate, to modify our approach.

Ok, yes.. I see the points... I AM in the legalities forum and I do expect to see alot of what's here. I guess I just get so bogged down with all the quotes and longa$$ed posts that just get confusing. I guess if reading legal jargon was one of my interests then it wouldn't bother me... but I have a musical mind not a legal analyst's I come into the legalities forum to find out information as it pertains to me and my business.. reading the long posts about other lawsuits and differing opinions (that frequently are extremely redundant), irritates me The same thing getting re-hashed over and over and over again... I just had to b*tch I guess. Been a lil b*tchy lately.. redoing all the work related to CB's library not having all the music that I expected it to have... re-ripping 100's of cd's and redoing books AGAIN! Makes an ol' lady cranky. Sorry for that ... I'll try to behave myself I did find out here today, that Mr. H. says the contract has been changed... I'll have to call SC now and have a new one sent .. have a good day all

Maybe we should start a topic just for letting off steam.... call it the "kranky KJ" forum! Let all the rules down a bit and allow name calling, insults and just out 'n out complaining!! Might take some of the steam out of all the quotes with underlying innuendos.. let 'em go to the KK forum and have it out!

It's worse on other forums! I meant this one portion of the karaoke forum, not the whole thing! I love this forum overall, and think it is a great place. But a while back, I used a GreaseMonkey script to automatically excise posts in the Karaoke Legalities, Piracy, and more... section. I wouldn't even know they were there.

I do like it here.. like I said.. just a lil b*tchy lately.. time for a vacation!! Back on topic.. I liked the article and even the few things that I thought were not quite 'right on'.. I understood that there's only room for so much explanation. I find myself using too many words when trying to explain this stuff to laypeople.. just gets complicated very quickly.

Thank you, Lisa. I have received a lot of positive and constructive feedback from folks in the Seattle area. The editor asked me to consider submitting more articles in the future.

-Chris Chris I did read the article. I must say it was very well written, BUT, it really kills new hosts. Between looking for references, and only hiring certified hosts, then talking about 10,000 song libraries and how many discs it takes to get there a new host would have no chance. Then you talk about living wage and all. How does someone just starting out NOT charge a lower price when they have many less songs than an long time KJ? If one guy, who has been in business for 20 years and has a collection of 20,000 songs can charge $250 a night, HOW can a new guy with 2,000 songs charge the same?? I will be lucky to get $150 a night when I start, just because of my small collection. (don't bother telling me about GEM and CB 12,000, because right now I just can't afford them. I can't make the down payments, so I can't make the purchases. I have to be working first.). Right now, I have 1381 unique songs. I have ripped them from SGB, AH, Party Tyme, and my one and ONLY CB, and have removed all the dupes. I have gotten permission from all of the above, but AH. I don't know who to contact for them. So what you say that it is illegal to shift ANY karaoke track that is originally on a physical disc is wrong. You can get permission, in writing to do that. As for the singers walking away from an illegal KJ, many won't. Many don't even care, just as long as they get to sing, and they get to sing the songs they want. Is it morally wrong for a singer to stay with an illegal KJ? Who's to say? Do singers have an obligation to rat out illegals, or to even question if they are illegal? I don't think so. They are there to sing and enrich their bar of choice. Singers don't care, because they don't get sued for singing at a pirate show. It's not their problem, and they can sing anything they want. I have been to those kind of shows. As a singer, it was nice that no matter what I asked for the guy had it. It was fun. It gave me something to do while my laundry was drying at the Laundromat next door. You were a new host, not too long ago. You have let your certifications go to your head, though. You tend to come off a bit pious, at times. I am not trying to put you down, just some friendly criticism. I understand that the "Big 3" are trying to fight the good fight, they aren't the only manus out there, and your article makes it harder for those of us that choose to use the other manus instead of the "Big 3", or even along side the "Big 3". One more point, it is QUITE possible to build a very nice collection of non-U.S. made karaoke downloads.

I appreciate the feedback, Smooth. I have read back through the article a few times. I have considered some of the other feedback I have received and I will be writing an update for next month.

Just for the record Tricerasoft makes getting a receipt super easy. There is a link on the left hand side of the page called 'my songs' it will show you every single song that has ever been downloaded from you account, and there is a button to email this list as a receipt.

-James I think the same applies to most online sites that charge for downloads. Karaoke Version and Select-a-Track show a record of purchases. -Chris
