Aren't there PRO fees (ASCAP, BMI) fees associated with karaoke for venues providing karaoke?
I realize that the fees are to pay royalties to the ip owners, but why aren't/can't karaoke manus also compensated through these fees?

There are license fees with ascap, bmi, seasac for performance rights to the copyright owner(s). No such thing as "pro fees" and karaoke manufacturers don't get anything for mimicking original works, just as a cover or tribute band doesn't get a cut for mimicking others either.

Because they don't own those rights to the original music - only the original rights holder. Even someone doing a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song cannot collect royalties on their version - the original writer/composer of the song does.

Gee maybe ascap, bmi, seasac could collect for showing trademarks and then SC could get paid.
What would be the difference? Even Pirate clubs would pay then!

What would be the difference? Even Pirate clubs would pay then! That's kind of what I was thinking. Aren't there fees associated with TV broadcasts as well?

What would be the difference? Even Pirate clubs would pay then! We'd love for that to happen. Unfortunately, those organizations collect for their members--who are a very specific group of people, specifically songwriters and their assignees--and are not interested in assisting us. Of course, I suppose we could form an organization that would collect license fees just like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC...but it would have to be backed by the threat of lawsuits...which would put us right back where we started.

AND, would clubs really want to pay another fee? They would just hire more bands and drop karaoke.
