Pssst--Chip--"Earmuffs," okay?
Got 'em....
(ear muffs are for cold weather... it's not cold anymore. Did you mean "earplugs?")

MadMusicOne, you're going to get me in trouble with Chip again. But I'm used to it.
Here's the deal...there is nothing wrong with playing your original discs using the CD drive on your computer. When you do that, though, you're going to make it harder on my investigators to filter you out of the process. My investigators are well trained and good at what they do. They rarely get "made"--in fact, I've never known one to be "made," and I've done a few dozen myself and have never been "made," either. And a lot of the information they gather standing two feet from you.
That's right! They might not see you using a disc when they are "two feet from you."
HarringtonLaw wrote:
However, that's not always possible. What I'm concerned about is that they will see your computer, and see the SC logo come up, and yet not pick up that you've put a disc in. On the other hand, if they see a disc player--and they know what disc players look like--on your table, they're going to pay special attention to whether you're playing from it.
But remember that "they are very good at what they do."

There is a risk, however slight, no matter how careful we train them to be, that they will mistake your setup for playing from media-shifted copies.
And that spells; L-A-W-S-U-I-T
But don't worry, once you're sued, your audit will only cost $500.00 and then they will simply drop the suit when they get around to it and the world will be right again. (did I forget to mention that they just might sue you venue too?) These are all simple mistakes that can easily and quickly be cleared up and you'll be back in business in no time.
HarringtonLaw wrote:
So if you'd like to tamp down that risk, what I suggest--if you're going to play discs through your computer--is that you do something to tip off the investigator as to how you do it.
Because it's
your risk, and while the investigators are good, they're not THAT good.... right?

It could be a sheet in the front of your book that says "All Sound Choice tracks are played from original discs" in big letters.
Because little letters might be overlooked.
HarringtonLaw wrote:
Or you could make an effort to be more conspicuous about putting in the discs.
Might I suggest that you slowly and carefully wave it in front of you patrons each time you're about to put one in your machine?
HarringtonLaw wrote:
Or keep your discs up on the table. Or whatever other thing you might be comfortable with. What you do is up to you, and if some suggestion I have doesn't work for you, don't use it.

(Chip, you can take the earmuffs off now.)
Thanks, they were getting hot anyway.
Just as a reminder; you forgot to tell what to do in case a patron hands you an SC disc to play... Which includes a log sheet complete with that patron's contact information in the unlikely event that any member of the crack investigative squad inadvertently doesn't see a disc.... Mr. Harrington will tell you that he did have a lawsuit against a KJ who couldn't prove it was a patron's disc,
Just doing my part to be helpful because sometimes this information can get so confusing that it needs to be translated to English.
Carry on...
