I see a way. Come up with a way to have electronic transactions, like iTunes does, where the tracks are monitored and are only allowed to be moved within a certain amount of computers. iTunes allows your tunes to be on 5 computers. After that they don't allow you to move them, anymore, unless you cancel a computer. The karaoke manus can do the same thing, but only allow one computer. Meanwhile they could keep track of what you own, in case you have a hard drive go down. Then you could re-download the tracks you lost. iTunes does that, too.

Interesting thought. That might work for future customers, because they would then be purchasing ONLINE from a site that would be sending you the purchase in the form of an ONLINE file. There would also be a record of your transactions.

What about past customers (from years gone by) who have already done a media shift of discs (something that was not purchased as an ONLINE file)? People like you, Chip, Lonnie, Sevarin, KJAthena, etc... people who purchased their discs over the years, and have converted them (media-shifted) to a Hard Drive. There is no such record of a transaction (such as what you point out with ITunes).

I would say that it is too late to do anything about that. It is something that the Karaoke companies should have been working on all this time, instead of waiting until the problem went critical, and now having to do catch-up work. Suing people who shifted what they purchased if a waste of resources.

There unfortunately is no benefit to being certified, after this long (almost 18 months) i didn't even get the perks that the cert charge is supposed to be giving certified hosts let alone fewer pirates, more money or more gigs.
let there be more certified hosts, they get nothing more than i have, another day to fight against the pirates that will never be sued..

Since CB is gone, I would add my condolences to those who actually paid for their audits and certs.....

Would also like to find out what those "credits" they gave out -knowing their position- will be worth now. Will they be honored by Digitrax?

Good point.... a couple hundred dollars for a company you won't even be able to google in a few months......

Maybe they could come up with an exchange program for previous purchases. Let's say I have E1-E10 and 200 other CB disks. I submit my list to CB they prepare a download or drive or whatever specifically for me. Each new track has some sort of identifier for me and I ship them my disks. Then all previous purchases and future purchases could be tracked controlled the same way.

I realize there are some disks/songs that are OOP, but I'd think they still have the masters. Since they're just swapping out for what's already been sold I don't think licensing should be an issue.

Maybe and maybe not. I know that one of their consent settlements with a publisher included the destruction of masters for a bunch of songs.

Safest thing to do is just to hold on to your discs.... no dispute can ever arise from that.

Why do you think the general consensus around this forum is legal gospel? Show me some sources that aren't just colleague speculation.

What makes you think that what a few have posted is the general consensus of the forum? I'm one who firmly believes SC has no case for several reasons previously posted- which may explain why their case has never made it to court.. There are PLENTY of people here who disagree with Timberlea, Athena, and others who like SC's methodology for reasons completely unfathomable to me.

There are also those of us that believe piracy and theft is an issue that needs to be addressed but don't necessarily agree with the current methodologies being used to fight it.

It will be interesting to see how things go with the combined effort by SC and PR. I have always thought that having only a single manufacturer leading the charge was the wrong way. I believe there needs to be more of a united front.

ChrisAvis,

I agree wholeheartedly...a united front is necessary to eliminate piracy :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

I didn't mean to suggest that this was the actual general consensus of the forum. You see, I'm new, so I don't even know what the general belief system is around here. I'm simply rebutting her idea that I should read others' posts to get an idea of what's legal and what isn't, rather than her giving me some solid legal text that spells it out in black and white.

In fact, I'm relatively certain this forum is populated by rational, reasonable human beings who would oppose SC's litigious bullcrap.

Nope. None of them are rational or reasonable and the human aspect can even come into question.....

This is not an issue. The credits are downloaded into your local Compuhost and can be used to unlock songs forever. There is no loss of what was paid for, only a temporary loss of buying future unlock credits. Of course you now need to make sure your local HD is backed up.....

HEY! All the voices in my head say that I'm rational!

Um, on the other hand, step into my bathroom after I use it in the morning and my humanity may surely be in doubt...
