I noticed in another post that some KJs have developed their own karaoke MP3+G files using Karaoke Builder Studio. I have a lot of singers that are missing out on new Alternative Rock such as Theory of a Deadman, Seether, Cage the Elephant, etc. simply because no one makes karaoke songs for them.

I wouldn't mind putting the time and effort into creating a couple of my own MP3+G files but have some questions some of you may be able to answer...

1) Could I use the Instrumental Track I purchased and Downloaded from iTunes?
2) Will Karaoke Builder Studio allow me to use my purchased iTunes track and combine with graphics to produce an MP3+G or Zip file I can use with Sax & Dotties Show Presenter?
3) Lastly... is it legal to create these... IF not, is there a way to do this legally?

Thank you all in advance for your help!

I'm no expert, but I would think it would be illegal to do this for commercial use unless you paid all of the applicable fees to the original artist and other license holders (synch license, mechanical license, copyright, etc.).

I've read here before that even the most experienced users take about 2-3 hours to create a well synched karaoke track from scratch.

When you add it all up, I'm not sure you want your singers to get used to that kind of treatment. The value to you as the business owner just doesn't seem to be there.

Which songs are you looking for? maybe you aren't looking in the right places. I have a bunch of Seether songs, a few TOADM, only one Cage song.

I WOULD SAY YES TO THE FIRST 2 QUESTIONS. As far as the tracks being legal to use.... I'd be willing to take my chances as long as you don't add the Sound Choice logo to them.

But without the SC logo, no one will be interested to sing

Well, according to some KJ's... In my case, people honestly couldn't care about the brand or logo, has long as the track sounds good :)

And since SC will only see their, supposed, new music to certifieds and GEM lessees, anyone who doesn't care about them now, will continue not to care about them.

Thanx for the reply all!

I may try to create 1 or 2 songs with that software... possibly just something I would sing. Thanx for the feedback!

Lonman... you have a Cage song? I must be looking in the wrong place - I don't have any. What do you recommend?

Sound Choice... Still have a couple of the hard-core Karaoke singers every once in a while that would scoff if I didn't give them the Sound Choice version... But truthfully, anymore, people just want new stuff and don't care about the manufacturer.

I've yet to hear of anyone being sued for using a home made karaoke track at a show. I just can't imagine some famous singer breaking someone's balls for making a karaoke track for himself to use at his own personal karaoke show. That being said; if the same guy was making homemade tracks and he was selling them on the internet and making some big money; someone might be looking to get their piece of the pie.

Sunfly has two Cage the Elephant songs at least. Check tricerasoft or selectatrack.

SF version of Ain't No Rest For The Wicked.

I have many that would scoff if I didn't have certain brands - but many just want the songs, however with the quality brands, they realize what they've been missing. New stuff isn't what is the thing around here generally. We do get some sung, but usually not until after several months to a couple years of it being released in karaoke form. MUCH of my 'new' stuff is older back catalog type material that has either never been released before or stuff I just never had.

He asked if it was legal, not if he could get away with it. I guess ethics are optional for some...... :argue:

I had no idea Sunfly produced new karaoke! I am quite excited to see a lot of songs I was looking for, especially the Jack White Song - Love Interruption...

I see I can download mp3+G so they should work in Sax & Dotties. Awesome! SO.... Euros? Interesting.

Tell me more about this "Sunfly", I would like to hear. :)

Sunfly is a UK manufacturer. Been around since the early 90's (at least producing cdg), they had some affiliation with Legends label, Fat Cockeral (their laserdiscs) and a couple other right now. At one time were very hit or miss in quality, but the last few years have really stepped up their game. They use the same music tracks now that SBI Karaoke use for theirs. Yes they still produce new music monthly, however being a UK manu, they do tend to gear their releases toward UK hits over US hits.
I buy custom discs through selectatrack.com which carry all the major UK labels.

ETHICS????? Chartbuster just got shut down for selling songs that they had no right to sell. Sound Choice repeatedly released songs that they didn't have rights to produce. Have you deleted all of your CB and SC songs from your library? Someone who loves a song enough to purchase an instrumental track and then create a CDG file so that he or she can sing one of their favorite songs at a karaoke show is unethical in your mind????? That is RICH!

CB and SC can make millions of dollars over the years while selling tracks that they shouldn't but I'm am accused of having no morals because I don't think creating a few karaoke tracks for my oen personal use is a terrible thing to do?

Do you ever drive over the speed limit? If the answer is yes; then you are a law breaker that just hasn't been caught yet. Shame on you. If some musical artist happens to "catch" me singing one of their songs at a karaoke show; hopefully, he'll come up on stage and sing it with me. Worst case scenario is the guy would probably ask me not to use that track any more unless I pay him a license fee. Until I get asked to pay someone; I'm going to keep singing my favorite songs...as unethical as it may be.

Buy the music legally and again as long as the club is paying their PRO fees, at least the underlying music works are covered. You may in fact be in violation of 'sync' rights - could there be a loophole on that if the lyrics are not being displayed to where no one but the singer can see them? Probably not though!
