Sorry Lonnie, I am not the pillar of morality that you are. I am trying to get going in my business. I am not stealing music. I am buying it, which is proving to be slow and tedious, but I am getting there. No one here has come up with proof that this DK set is illegal. There has only been speculation, even on your part. So, until concrete proof comes out that these discs are illegal, I WILL use them, and I WILL sleep very well at night. Any questions?? I am 1:1 on everything I have.

It's true. Where is your proof, and don't tell me that it's the price of the set. Give me some link or case that has been settled, or ANYTHING concrete, not just your opinion. I have been all over the web and have found nothing to prove your claim.

That goes both ways - I don't use it nor do I want to (all ripped lower than I prefer from what I understand)! Where's your proof they are? YOU are the one that wants to use it. Have found nothing to prove they ARE legal either. Which brings me back to price & where they are sold - never in a 'real' karaoke store only on sites that often sell bootlegged materials which is suspicion to begin with - yes Amazon can have ANYONE be a seller, not just Amazon themselves. But again, it's not me using them, so I have to prove nothing.

The price of the set may well be the strongest indicator of a lack of authenticity, or at least of a lack of licensing.

For example, the current mechanical license rate is 9.1 cents per song (or more for songs longer than 5 minutes). Mechanical licenses are only one part of the license structure for karaoke tracks.

So when somebody sells a hard drive with 150,000 tracks for $300, when just the mechanical license fees would exceed $13,000 on those tracks, that's a pretty strong indicator of a lack of authenticity.

Now, when I see a DK Super CDG with 910 songs on it for $78.97 on Amazon, I think back to that mechanical royalty rate, sitting at 9.1 cents (as it was in 2008, the copyright date on that disc). That, plus any fixing fees, synch licenses, lyric reprint licenses, plus production and distribution costs, and profit to the wholesale distributor and the retailer...when the price per song is 8.6 cents...I can't speak to the authenticity of the discs, but at that price, somebody's taking a bath, be it performer, producer, publisher, or retailer. And that makes me uncomfortable.

So, are your goons going to be coming after me for using them? They aren't SC.

One could only wish they could go after those users.

Wow, you are such a bitter person. I am not hurting you by using those discs. I understand you getting bent about people using loaded hard drives, but to get bent about someone using one set of SCDGs is ridiculous. I really don't think I could be that petty.

Not bitter at all! Just wish there was a definitive answer on the SCDG discs. Again if someone showed proof they were made 'legally', i'd apologize & NEVER state another thing about them, but until then common sense tells ME (price and where they are sold) they are not made legally and are no different than a common pre-loaded hard drive only difference being those files reside on a disc.
But it just seems people want to use them without proof or trying to get answers - if anything to shut everyone up about it!

I am not looking to "shut anyone up". I am just looking for affordable music so I can get started reasonably soon, with a reasonable collection, and since there is no definitive answers either way, I see no reason why I shouldn't use these discs, at least until proof of them being illegal surfaces. I am still hoping that KJMPHD will be a viable option in the future to build my collection further.

DK is one of those brands you want to have. I do have one of these SCDG sets, but if new disk sets were readily available, for a reasonable price, I may have looked the other way.

I have been singing Karaoke since 1994, and I am quite familiar with DK. I agree, if I could find a reasonably priced set I would have bought it, but I certainly can't afford what people are charging for USED sets.

Not everyone is meant to be able to start a karaoke business. It's not like it's tens of thousands like some businesses. Even "legally" it's still fairly cheap. Nobody should be able to start doing shows with $500. It's part of the problem we face when trying to make money later.

I WISH it was only $500 that I have spent.

Really....

What do you think the entry point into this business should be, with a decent library and sound system?

Are you saying that you could do it all for $500 or less?

Just to start out, I would say you need to spend at least $1,500 (maybe a little less) for a decent sound system (that's just for your Speakers and your Amp/Mixer). Then you have to invest in the other accessories... a Player Unit or PC setup that can play Karaoke tracks, Microphones (that can go for as little as $50 each), a video monitor, all your wires and cables to connect everything..... you're probably looking at another $500 minimum to the above mentioned $1,500.

Then there's the library. You probably can get some real cheapie core library built up with about $400 or $500.

** Edit ** Just as a footnote: When I started out, I took out a $25,000 loan to buy a new car (my 1st). That was in July of 2000. I spent 21K on the car, and took the other 4K and invested in my Karaoke system. I already had a good core library of about 400 discs by that time (I had been colecting CDGs for 4 years prior as a hobby, and already had a better library than most KJs did in my area). 12 years later, I am up to a bit over 1000 CDGs.

I think what karaokegod meant (at least I read it that way) was the start up is a lot more than $500.00. I'd say add another 0 just to have a basic, decent sound system and library, not including a vehicle to haul the stuff.

I've got almost $500 + another zero tied up in my equipment, and more than least 1/2 that tied up in music, and that's buying music 2nd hand off of CL, ebay and other sources.
