If they tell me they have to go, I bump them up, and they don't leave? I will not let them sing the rest of the night or the following week.

1) Why is it that PBTDL is always yowled by 6 or 8 people on their 6th or 8th shot of bar tequila?
2) Why does the softest voiced person for whoom you have just set the sound take the wireless mic and somehow find the loudest screamer in the bar to "help" him sing?
3) Hey buddy, if you're too drunk to write out the slip, you're probably too drunk to use my equipment...
Which of course leads to "Gee- I left my glasses at home.."
4) The official Obscure Song Singer- Example: I ONLY sing "The Moon Smells Like Cheese But Tastes Like Chicken" by Earthworm Dung- How come you don't have it?!?!? It's HUGE in Guam!
BTW- Don't you love it when they try to put their drinks on your table or equipment? I have to admit that I'm not real pleasant to those folks. I see that as nothing but inconsiderate.

This happened last Saturday: Singer: Hey, I can’t find that song “When She Was Just 17” Me: I don’t think I have that one. Singer: Bobby sang that song last night. It goes like this – (singing) “When she was just 17, you know what I mean, and the way she looked…… Me: Oh lady, I stand corrected. I do have that song, listed as “I Saw Her Standing There!” by the Beatles Singer: Yes, that’s the one. I knew you had it! Called the singer on her turn. Singer: On stage before I can play the music, she said “Sorry, Bobby I’m singing your song”. Bobby: What song is it? Singer: It's "When She Was Just 17". =============================================== Middle part of a 32 singer rotation Singer: (Late 20’s good looking, a little inebriated): Oh please, please, let me sing next. If you let me sing next I’ll show you my t*ts Me: (I probably didn't put the words in the correct order) Lady, it’s a long list, but let me see (let me see as in - let me check & see if I can insert you within the rotation. Her presumption - ok, let me see 'em, as in let me see your t*ts now!). Singer: Lifted her blouse/bra up to her neck & exposed a nice pair. Audience were stunned, guys whistling, yelling turn around, all they saw was her back, her front towards me, they definitely know what just happened. Singer: Now, can I sing next? Me: Sorry, but my answer is still NO. Singer: Stormed out “You’re such an a$**h*l*e"

I am not going to bump someone up just so they can leave and p1ss off the people who are still around waiting their turn like adults.

Nope, did that when I first started hosting. Often times they only wanted to sing once more. I bought into their SOB stories only to find out it was all BS. So NO ONE gets moved for anything. OK, no one gets moved UP for anything, I will move you further DOWN the list by request.

So Drunk they have to use the back of my chair to hold theirselfs up. Then get pissed when I tell them "your too drunk, go sit down".
One singer starts a song, then about 15 seconds into it, here comes 6 of their friends wanting to sing with them. "If they wanted a duet, they would have asked for it to start with".
They get pissed when I say "stop beating up my mics!" while they are asking "is this on?" Almost got throwed in jail over that one, but that is another story.
"Do you have this song?" I don't even look at my book and answer "No" "Well, why don't you check?" "Because it's my gear and I know what I have!". "Are you sure?"

As KJ's, we have 3 primary objectives. 1) Attract customers. 2) Entertain the customers (keep all customers in the bar for as long as possible) 3) Foster repeat business. Moving someone up in the rotation is counterproductive to #2 & #3. For instance: If someone is leaving, they no longer represent revenue to the bar. I'd rather them not sing, to be honest - and give their spot to someone who is spending money. I'd especially like to give it to a first-time singer or first time customer to facilitate exposure to my brand of karaoke. Also, getting a first time singer or first time customer involved in the karaoke show increases the liklihood that you will keep them in the bar for as long as possible - or #2 above. Next, there are always customers chomping at the bit, waiting to sing (some patiently, some impatiently). Moving someone up will upset every singer in between the newly allocated spot in the rotation and the singer's regular spot. Those are the ones that come up and say - "Hey, he got to sing twice since I sang my last song!!!". You'll also upset new singers that haven't gotten up yet. This is contrary to #3 above - fostering repeat business. And, if you are honest and say "He was leaving, so I bumped him up", then you'll get that from every singer every week because now they know how to beat the system. And those are the ones that I have learned, like Lon, don't really leave. Keep an honest, fair & consistent rotation - that's a very important factor in succeeding in this biz.

At my show last Saturday. Singer: If I can sing next I will buy you any drink you want. Me: I get my drinks for free besides I don't have a beer until after the show is over. Singer: damm. I also had a lady turn in 2 slips so I put her up for the song that was on the top. She sings her song then comes back up right away and gives me heck because she has to leave and she wanted to sing the other song first. She tells me I have to put her up next it was my fault she did not get to sing the other song first. I just held my ground and told her sorry there are a lot of other singers. She calls me an a**hole and leaves.

My new reply to "How much will it cost to move up" is....
"The going rate is $100 and you sing next. For $200 I will cut off the current singer and put you up immediately. For an additional $100 I will even let you pick what song you get to sing, otherwise, it is dealers choice."

I started my show at 9pm. An hour later, a guy said “I signed up 2 hours ago & you haven’t called me up yet”. ======================================= “There are 8 of us here. We all want to sing Love Shack, Achy Breaky Heart & Friends In Low Places - in that order". My private thoughts - Why don't I just give you guys a mini-concert! OR why don't I just play all 3 songs simultaneously. Let me turn on my other karaoke players. Yeah, right!

My personal pet peeve du jour....
The girl who comes in with a group of friends and insists on coming up to sing with each one of them...AND putting in her own song. It's not a duet situation -- she just shows up every time one of her friends comes up and says, "They want me to sing with them." Her friends don't care, but the rest of the bar is ready to string me up, because they have to wait an hour or more to sing. Then, of course, the trick is trying to get this girl to understand why (1) she can't sing with every one of her friends; and (2) she doesn't get to sing her solo song.
This happens every time I work, and it's never the same girl (or guy), so there is no "learning situation" here.
Fun times.

Not every KJ is perfect, either. The couple I replace, back in 2004, consisted of a guy and his wife. They kind of ran it jointly. Well, every time some bad singer would come up the wife would jump on the other mic and start singing with the customer. Everyone used to hate that.

My absolute biggest pet peeve is a new one that just started with this new venue.
I have to set up my DJ stand on a pool table that I place a ping pong tabletop on. When I go to do list maintenance, look up a song, or search for music between singers, my back is somewhat turned to the audience and the singer. The DJ station is fairly exposed and I have to keep a close eye on the mics.
Perhaps a 1/2 dozen times now, I get a singer going, turn to my laptop, and a few seconds later I hear two people singing. I turn around to find my DJ mic in the hands of someone that joined the original singer.
I have started licking and coughing on and doing other things to the mic before every show.....
