The primary reason I buy karaoke discs in bulk is because of the per song/per disc pricing I can usually get. There really isn't any way to fill out an exisitng library, or build a new one for a new rig without just stealing it.

But there is also the excitment of running across a rare disc, or better yet, set of discs.

I have picked up 2 SC8125's this way, my first DK 1-99 Set was picked up this way, and a large number of Legends discs. I even received a near complete Pioneer Laserdisc set when the guy through them in for free with the shipment to clear space in his garage.

This last purchase I made was supposed to be my last for a while, but when I find things like what I found in this one, it makes me want to keep looking -

The complete Sound Choice Surco Hispanico Series SC7101 - SC7112
13 other Sound Choice discs in Spanish 1522, 2049, 2211, 2223, 2226,2230, 2239, 2243, 2253, 2257, 2261, 2278, 2294,
26 Assorted Spanish Language discs from Karaokanta, Karaoke Box, MultiMusic and others

Why is a bunch of spanish karaoke that I can't understand cool to me? This new 5 night a week gig I have appearently has a group of regulars that wanted spanish karaoke. Nice coincedence for me.

But the cooler part was a case of Sound Choice discs starting at SC3015 running to SC3463 - Of the 448 possible discs in that run, 331 of them were present. Pretty phenominal even if it does duplicate a fair amount of the tracks I already have in my collection.

Now...where is that neighborhood kid at.....he has some ripping to do.

It actually doesn't cost as much as you may think. This was an amazing find even by my standards. ~900 discs (more than 1/2 were Sound Choice) + a rack mount disc player (which just so happened to have VGA out and so it also went into the new show)

$576 including shipping. (64 cents per disc)

It took me almost two months to finalize this deal though.

Chris that is a great deal! I wish I could find some Spanish Karaoke for that price. We just got offered a spot, a great club actually with 2 huge dance floors etc. They wanted us to do karaoke, a HUGE Latino crowd. But 99% of our stuff is in english. Shoot me a msg if you find anymore deals like that :D

I'm curious as to what you ended up paying for the 2 SC8125's that you had obtained in other Bulk Buys.

The same can be said of any purchase..

A wise man sets aside a little "Walkin' Around Money" just for those deals..

This am, I found a Dell Latitude, E6400, Core 2 Duo, Win 7, 160 gig HD, $200.00 and still in warranty..

Just had to grab it.. Dell wanted $600.00...

The majority of my disc purchases have been in bulk as well. My set of discs about 60 that I acquired was in trade for doing some web work. I then purchased 75 disc off CL for $75, then I picked up about 200 for $250 and so on. The best deal was trading a 5x8 utility trailer for about 400 disks mostly CB.

My dup count is a little higher than I'd like but it's mostly across different manus. I've managed to put together a decent library 10,000+ tracks for about 2 grand (that's $.20 ea) I sold the dup disks to a local KJ.

I picked up two SC8125's in bulk buys and one in auction for a total of three. One of those is pretty beat up, the other in very good condition, and the auction disc was unopened (I opened it and it now has Kurt Slep's signature on it).

I was actually fine with the two I picked up in bulk buys, but the auction one was priced too well to pass up.

I highly discourage anyone from purchasing bulk karaoke music unless you can get it at a pennies on the dollar deal like this one. Even so, you may just be wasting your money. I see the future of karaoke music going to some kind of combination of subscription/streaming/cloud very soon - in fact, I bet that within 5 years (if that), karaoke hosts that own their own disks/music will be the minority among "legal KJs".

In spite of what I am doing now, I agree 100%. The only reason I am even doing this is because I am trying to build my business TODAY. If I wanted to build my business much more slowly, I would buy a very minimal set of music and then......wait.

Physical media is a dead format. I hate that I have to buy it at all.

There is at least one upside to it though.....

There will always be tracks that even with new cloud/streaming technologies, may never be re-licensed and the only place they will exist will be on disc. Buying discs, whether it be in bulk or otherwise, is the only way to get those tracks. Ultimately, this could provide a bit of a competitive advantage over those that are limited to only whatever is licensed under the new distribution technologies.

Troy...the future of Karaoke isn't in the cloud. The future of Karaoke is in the ground.

It may not be a cloud - so to speak - but I see where the future is going.

Sound Choice was the first to basically take a poison pill and offer their entire library at a hugely discounted price. Then, of course, Chartbuster did so recently. Is it because they are or were basically "going out of business" - or maybe even - "going out of the new music business"? Well, in at least the case of Chartbuster, maybe they knew they were going to take the next logical step to regain their profits in the marketplace.

Put yourself in the shoes of Chartbuster. Making karaoke music under the same business model, given the constantly evolving dynamics of technology in the marketplace, is a path that they know will lead to nowhere.

A company will adapt to the changing marketplace, if they intend to remain a going concern. In this case, we have changing technologies, piracy, distribution & delivery methods that have changed the karaoke industry dramatically over the last five years of so. Often times, a firm's adaptation is in direct response to a competitor's move. A move is most effective when it essentially "one-ups" the competition.

From the perspective of the karaoke music manufacturer, they seek a return on their investment - investments they made yesterday, that they are probably making today, and will continue to make tomorrow. Thanks to piracy and the instant death of anti-piracy legislation, and evolving technology, there is no way that they can continue down their well-beaten path.

One of the manufacturers will make a major move soon. I have already wagered that it will be Chartbuster. Creating a streaming/cloud delivery method, also for commercial purposes, creates a new trough of customers. For those customers who cannot subscribe due to internet connectivity issues will still be there, buying music.

But this is nothing new - right? Chartbuster already did this. Yes, they did. But, it was a half-backside attempt at it, perhaps because they knew they were on the threshold of transfer of assets, bankruptcy, or the like. I believe that their product was somewhat limited in that it required Mac, or at least a certain program to use it. That was a big turn off for me (and others I'm sure) because we all feel that our current KJ/DJ programs are the best and most of us resist the task of learning yet another one.

We all know that folks behind Chartbuster are basically alive and well and probably behind the scenes in some fashion under the new Digitrax "concept". I have a hard time believing that Norbert didn't think this through and I'm willing to bet that when they hinted that they would be changing the way we think about karaoke, they are referring to their anticipation of becoming the leader in a new delivery method. And my guess is that, when someone here said that Sound Choice had become upset with Chartbuster, as per a telephone conversation, they know that Chartbuster, or their successors, will be poisoning the CD+G marketplace and very few customers will remain as we, the KJs, will adapt. We WILL adapt because the cost of two disks per month is roughly equal to the subscription price. Even the pirates will become customers, if for no other reason than to have access to new music. The smart ones will do so to keep the karaoke cops off their backs.

Enough of this book. If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

the future of karaoke may or may not be in the cloud however, I refuse to believe it will be in the ground...as my siggy says...change is inevitable except from a vending machine.

It is unlikely that the future of all karaoke music will be in a cloud. Many of us have 50+ gigs of music. That amount of space "for rent" is probably out of the question.

Streaming technology is the likely future. But some part of the "cloud" technology/concept could be part of it. For instance, if I went with a CB streaming package, maybe I could also upload some of the songs purchased elsewhere that are not available through Chartbuster. Remote data storage is big business right now, why not get a piece of that pie?

...Troy, like you, in your other longer post (a couple up), I do believe that Digitrax is the old Chartbuster Gang. It probably will change the way WE (the KJ) views Commercially Run Karaoke Shows. Although nothing new about a Venue purchasing their own cdg (or Karaoke Music), sound equipment and hiring a KJ to Host Shows or Hosting the shows themselves, I do believe it will be more affordable for them to do so. One time purchase of equipment, Streaming Karaoke, Pay someone to host (perhaps $10.00 per hour) and no worries about being named in a lawsuit or very little concern. Saving more money in the long run by taking out the middleman or middle-woman (the KJ).

Vinyl is supposedly a dead medium too, but there are still people who will buy it. In fact some fanatics will say that it sounds better than a CD..

There will always be people who are tactile by nature. They like something they can see and touch. That is why some of us still use books.

Not to mention basing your entire karaoke show on a cloud server could be risky. Not all bars have internet access, and even if they do, what happens if the internet goes down.. if you don't have your discs or at least something on a hard drive, you're screwed.
