Hi, ALL! I've been singing for about 4 1/2 years and since we go pretty often I'm always looking for new songs to sing. I've gotten to the point where I'll take my local KJ's list, randomly choose a page, and challenge myself to sing whatever I can within the area I see. It doesn't usually work, but sometimes it does. Where do you find inspiration? Do you ever get tired of singing the same songs? I'd love to hear how other people branch out of their comfort zone.

I just sing songs that I like, and that fit my voice. I also try and pick songs that are not sung all that frequently.

I always sing the song that the person before me sang because I'm a better singer then they are Over the years I've listened to a lot of different music from all genres. I love music and like mkcyj57, I sing what I like and usually isn't sung by anyone else.

I follow a simple and effective rule "FFF" Fun, Fast, Familiar. If you fill all 3 requirements it will be a hit the with audience. The "Familiar" part of the rule is very important, unless you don't care if the audience listens or not. IF you want to leave the stage feeling appreciated you have to read your audience and figure out what they might want to hear.

I've reset my compuhost 3 times since getting my show computer last April. My history still shows I've sung over 100 different songs since my last reset in February. I'd guess I'm somewhere in the 400 or so different songs I've sang. I hear a song on the radio and want to try it, I will note it and see if it fits my voice.
I spend a lot of time on iTunes with my music collection, sometime when working on that a song will catch my attention that I'd like to try.
Problem with singing that many different songs, I know exact words to few of them and still need a monitor.

I keep a small notebook in my car, and write down all the songs that I find myself singing along with on the radio where I can hit all the notes without straining.
I then try then out on the slow karaoke nights!

I get my inspiration from the people around me and the prevailing mood, then pick on the fly. I never plan in advance.
Sometimes I do well, sometimes I crash Like Halley's Comet. Fun either way.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention some of my inspiration comes from liquid courage and peer pressure from friends/family at the table thinking how great it would be for me to sing songs like Super Freak

mrmarog wrote: The "Familiar" part of the rule is very important, unless you don't care if the audience listens or not. Not necessarily always true. I think some of my better applause nights have been when I've sang a bluegrass song that I KNOW the audience is not even remotely familiar with. For inspiration, I sing what feels right at that given moment. I do stay away from slow songs at karaoke venues; I don't sing many of them anyhow, but they bore people in a live setting. I, as well, try not to sing what everybody else is singing. I tend to sing old favorites people forgot about, or just some of my favorite obscure stuff. But my mood can sway my song choices. (Miranda Lambert has some great songs for nights when you're fed up with the ex!) lol

For me, it usually comes down to spur-of-the-moment decisions. I'll go to karaoke shows and have no clue what i want to sing, but as I'm browsing through the book something jumps out at me.
Other times, someone will give me a challenge, and my motto for that is "I'll usually try anything once." Quite often I'll think "man, this is going to be horrible" but I've often been surprised myself. Lately, I've been trying different genres as well and have been having a blast.

I'll sing anything, anywhere.. My favorite KJ does "Bender Gender" night every so often.. Sadly, my voice refuses to go that high, yet, I still have a ball.. (Pun Intended)

Last night I sang Love Me Tender. First time I did an Elvis song publicly. Wasn't too bad. Got a good response. I typically don't do slow songs, occasionally if I think the song will go over, be danced to than yes but more than not, upbeat songs to keep the night spirited.

I like to ask people to submit "themes" on our Facebook pages and use them for inspiration.

along those lines, as we are at one bar 4 nights, we use saturdays and make a theme for the night. Gender Bender of course, but music from the movies, the elements (earth wind fire water, Rare Earth), transportation, animals, anatomy (i wanna hold your hand, dont it make my brown eyes blue), places (mississippi queen, Kansas), colors (Ballad of the Green Berets, Blue October), seasons (hazy shade of winter, Edgar Winter Group), and it is not for songs that MENTION these things, but have them in the title or artist name. and it is amazing how people get into it and look for somethign they may not have normally tried just to keep with the theme. and the inventiveness, for colors someone will do Amarillo by Morning (spanish for yellow). it is not mandatory to play along, but everyone has fun.
also thursdays we will do kamikaze rounds. two buckets one pink, one blue. everyone who wants to play puts in two songs, one male one female. when its your turn to sing, just come grab and go. the stuff that gets done and surprises of who does whay surprisingly well, and horribly bad, gets everyone rolling and having a great time. again, not mandatory, the rotation does not change, just when its your turn if you want in to kamikaze, you can play. we have yet to hae any slips left over at the end of the night they have so much fun.
