To all the KJ's that have thousands of songs and have to rename the files lol. Maybe there's a program out there but when you get a hard drive of songs and it's first name first or titled wrong and have to go through each one it's insane. Much respect to all !

...and just where does one get one of these hard drives containing thousands off mis-titled songs?

What's the big deal? I name my stuff first name first. I don't call him Joel, Billy. I call him Billy Joel. Seems to make more sense to me.

Because a filing system should have, and always has had, last name first. Libraries, any offices, etc. it is last name first.

Really???? It's my filing system and nobody else touches it. It is set up for my satisfaction and no one else. So I can name it how ever I want, which by the way is first name first, there are a lot of singers that only know songs by the first name of the artist....

Do you know Madonna's last name? how about Fergie? how about Paul David Hewson do you even know who he is without looking it up?

A persons filing system is tailored to fit their individual need not some system that some school somewhere taught you!

Exactly it's however you are comfortable with your filing.
Now from a singer perspective, I choose last name, first name nowdays. I went with first name last name - and singers got confused looking for an artist like Billy Joel - under Joel as they were taught how to look it up in a library or a record store. I had more people asking me for help finding an artist listing first name last name because they were looking for last name, it lasted less than a year then went back to a more standardized system of last name, first name that most educated people understand. In even a simple filing system, you alphabetize by last name - most people do get this.

That statement alone speaks directly to the intellectual level you're dealing with. Heaven forbid you'd actually 'learn' something from a school. Ever look in a phone book? How many singers names start with Billy? How many start with Joel? Simple reasoning alone would dictate that an artist is easier to find when broken down in smaller groups. But then, simple reasoning is, obviously, beyond the reach of some.

Broken down in smaller groups is the key reason to go last name first. Spend some hours looking in a phone book and you will understand that. Easier to find by last name than it would be first name. Take the name John Smith. I would bet there are many more Johns in the world than Smiths. Less last names in the states than first names. If you had to look up 1000 names in a phone book sorted by last name vs 1000 names sorted by first name, you would finish faster with the last names every time. It is personal preference but I always go with what I believe to be the easiest. I spend many, many, MANY hours with both my karaoke and DJ files renaming the files so the spellings are correct and the formatting is the same. I rename nearly every DJ file as usually when I download it, it is named 04 - Poker Face. When I am done it is Lady Gaga - Poker Face. So easy to find when you only have a couple seconds during a show.

As far as how to look for Madonna's name or Cher's name in a "last name first, first name last" format, it's really pretty simple. It's just "Madonna" or "Cher". Not rocket science. Just because your format uses last name first, doesn't mean you HAVE to give them a last name.

In the end, it's your own personal preference, mine is to make it the easiest for the customers, doesn't mean there won't be a few confused folks, some people will always have questions, usually they just missed seeing the name or they are looking in my "titles" book (which is clearly marked on the cover) or they just don't know how to spell.

What still cracks me up are these people that list their books with band names as first last
Molly Hatchet - name of a band, not a person, but kjs list it as Hatchet, Molly
Lynyrd Skynyrd i've seen as Skynrd, Lynyrd - or worse yet, Skynyrd, Leonard
Montgomery Gentry (band name) always see listed as Gentry, Montgomery.

There are SEVERAL more examples. Take a little time to research your artists.

Yeah... just spent about 30+ hours reconfiguring my book, so I feel everyone's pain.

Always, always, always last name first.

Except for bands. Furthest I'll go is Beatles, The.

Listing the duet under both artists I actually can see and have thought about it myself - still debating if it would be worth the extra space in an already large book. As many do come up to me asking for that Sheryl Crow song Picture - when it is actually a Kid Rock song ftg Sheryl Crow.

I won't even put the 'The' in, it's just listed
Beatles
in my books.

I usually list the Duet under the first Artist's name and add the other name/s to that. So, I will have one set of songs under the single artist, and then it's followed by the duets for that artist with the other name/s...
Example:
Newton-John, Olivia --- Physical
Newton-John, Olivia --- Xanadu
Newton-John, Olivia and John Travolta ---- Summer Nights

I also have a separate section in my books that list all of my Duet songs (alphabetized by Titles, not Artists).

Right. This is how I do it now, but many often think the song was by the other, which is why i'm debating whether listing it under both artists.
Newton-John, Olivia & John Travolta - Summer Nights (listed under Newton - technically correct listed here)
Travolta, John & Olivia Newton-John - Summer Nights (listed under Travolta)

So no matter which artist they want to look up, they'll find it.

I figure, alphabetizing just one of Artist's name for a Duet is enough... ONLY because I list all Duets in a separate section as well. If someone were looking up "Summer Nights" in my books, they would find it right away in my books (regardless of which name it was listed under).

Exactly. I guess it depends on if you are anal about such things and what software you use. If someone asks for a Billy Joel song, I just search for "Joel" and I get anything that has "Joel" in it no matter how the file is named. Half my songs are one way, half the other.

And it really doesn't matter.

Actually it does matter in the songbooks. Has nothing to do with the software. Talking about making it easy for the customer.

Well in my title book, yes someone would find Summer Nights with no problems. I'm talking the artist listings only. These are what are more used than anything.
My online books - they are nice, you just type in either persons name and all songs by that artist (duets included no matter how listed) come up in the results.
