Well, I open my email inbox 9:30 pm, Jun 21 & there was an invite to the karaoke cloud summit (quote): “The event will be held Friday, June 22, at the Hilton Nashville Downtown, from 10 am to 3 pm Central Daylight Time. You can attend the event virtually, by clicking this link to access our livestream. We'll also be transmitting regular updates through our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/karaoke-c ... ummit-2012

5 hrs of coverage - It will be 12-5 pm my time. I have to check my supplies of peanuts, pretzels & beer. :)

Got an invite too. I will have to read into it a bit more. Would love to see what is discussed.

First, to Brian: If you would be kind enough to post a bit about it here afterwards for us non-streaming Luddites, I for one, would greatly appreciate it!

As for hotspots, you can get unlimited data for something like $50 a month from some companies, using their mobile hotspot attachments.

Even better, if the place is in an Optimum Wi-Fi hotspot- and many commercial areas are covered- you can get it for free. Two ways:

If you are and Optimum Online use

OR

Do what I did to use my Android tablet (No, not for shows). Ask a friend who has Optimum Online to add another e-mail account for your use.

I don't use the e-mail itself, but it gives me access to all the hotspots, most of which are in commercial areas. For me, the use is limited to vacation spots and other out of town access.

The tech industry *and* consumers have been sending the signals for over a decade now... Physical Media is dead. Content won't even be distributed on physical media. Get used to it. It is just the way it is going to be.

The new terms will be....

OSB Host - Original Stream Based Host
PSB Host - Pirate Stream Based Host

Well i missed most of it because I didn't read about this until after the fact, plus the stream happened to fall on a day where I have to work.

But from what I did see, it sounded promising. The most exciting thing that I did catch was PCDJ's solution. Commercial cloud use, where all the songs are online, and pay a registration fee to use everything legally.. The difference is that you can 'tether' a song so that you will be able to use it offline if no internet access is available. Once a song is tethered, all that is required to keep using that song is to log in to your account once a month *and keep paying the subscription fee of course*

now I just hope they can get some other content providers besides Digitrax on board. If i was doing shows, and someone like Zoom or SBI was involved, i'd sign up in a heartbeat

James...so far SC, DT and Sunfly have been confirmed per the chat during the summit, Zoom was not present so info about them is silent.

Well that's good news because Sunfly gets most of their tracks from SBI now anyway *lol*

SC is actually getting involved this time? All I can say is, it's about time..

good to hear, my comment was based on the conference a few months back where Kurt said it is not possible to make digitally distributed karaoke legally in the U.S.
laws have not changed, i guess that was not a true statement then?

Anything is possible, for the right amount of money. What the real problem is is the licenses to get the permission to do it legally cost too much

guess they are working on a solution that everyone can at least live with

course I'll believe it when it actually happens, cause I have heard promises like this before.

I don't know why the music companies are dragging there heels so much in the first place. They certainly get paid from enough sources. More than regular music.

I mean I don't understand the whole thing but if you look at the chain from producer to digital download.

First you have to pay mechanical
Then you have to pay for the lyric
then you have to pay for SYNC
then you have to pay to attach that track to a format *digital, cd whatever*

So after someone has made that track.. Someone else wants to sell it digtally. they have to pay for that right *and pay the karaoke producer a cut as well but we'll leave them out of it for now*

By my count that's FIVE sources of income for the music companies vs 2 or 3 *dj's in canada have to pay for a license to format shift their music* for regular music. And the downloads would be a RESIDUAL stream of income to boot.

In terms of money.. Its a no brainer. Why they are being so dense is a real brain scratcher to me.

Whoops i forgot about the performance fees. so that makes six sources of money for one freaking karaoke track.

Geez how many times do they need to get paid..

I got the impression something has or is changing in the whole sync / audio / visual work licenses because of internet streaming making everything some kind of digital av work already and they (manus) are trying to take advantage of these changes to make their licensing easier. It was kind of a read between the lines inference but a couple speakers (didn't) talk about it, a little, sort of.

All I can say is I am glad I have my disk for back-up  . Cause I got a feeling this is gonna fall on it's face sooner or later. The more complicated you make something, the more things can go wrong.

Athena - On WiFi hotspots, I know you can get something cheaper than what you quoted and I am almost 100% positive that I could line something up for you for $80/month or less and it would not be throttled. If you are interested, send me a PM.
