Sorry if this is a dumb question. I know Chartbuster has closed down, but everything that has gone on lately has my head spinning. I am interested in building a decent collection and the 12,000 song hard drive seems like a good way to start. I did an internet search and one link went to ebay where the auction had ended at $560. That seems really low and I was puzzled when I saw it. So, how can I get one?
Anyways, what I would like to do is build a decent, legal library so I can begin hosting-doing something that I think is a worthy and positive endeavor-Karaoke changed my life. I would also be interested in buying discs from someone who is getting out of the Karaoke business. Looking for collections of Music Maestro, Monster Hits, Top Tunes and other good name brand disc collections. I'm not looking to pay $10 per disc, I have limited funds and need some good deals.

Thanks wiz.
I know this probably isn't the best time to be getting into hosting Karaoke, but I really feel like I have a calling for it and it's something I have wanted to do for a long time. I'm sorry I didn't make the decision a long ago to jump in.
I've seen quite a few Karaoke hosts and most have not been very good or very nice. I did meet a VERY nice host Friday night though. He didn't do everything 100% perfect(who does or who can?), but he was so polite and personable I was pleasantly surprised. He seemed like a genuinely nice and good person. Nowadays this is rare IMO.

Wow, $560 for CB 12k. Can you say “bootleg”? There’s an ebay listing of 3,000 songs for $999 which is just about right. I paid $4000/12k songs on mine, a week prior to their closing. I would imagine the price will stay at that range (or more) due to high demand. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=cha ... &_osacat=0Note: My CB drive has a front label with gold aluminum foil hard to remove CB logo that sez “Licensed to (my full name), Registration # 000000. The back label “Registered with Chartbuster #000000. Protect yourself. It would be advisable to ask the seller if you can get something in writing that the drive is being transferred to you, signed & notarized if possible.

Thanks Brian, do you know if they or whoever has taken over etc. is currently offering it or will be offering this again?
Seems like a better deal than the GEM series and you own it, no ongoing licensing fees etc.
I'm not that concerned about buying the most current tracks, I'd rather start with a good core of the most popular songs and then once I'm hosting and making some money I can start buying more based on what people request and based on any good deals I can find as I go along.
I'd like to get a decent Sound Choice set too, but only if I can own the discs. I think it's going to be hard to find a decent sized SC disc library for a reasonable amount of money. This might prevent me from being able to start out with Sound Choice or possibly ever owning a Sound Choice set. I have nothing against Sound Choice and would like to have their tracks, but not with all the rules, regulations and stipulations that come along with the GEM series.
Who knows, I may someday come across a decent sized SC disc collection for a reasonable price. Hopefully I'll have the money available when or if the time comes.

I am going to borrow $5,000 and try to sell some sound gear to raise another $2,000. I hope that's enough to at least get started.

I'm not interested in any rentals, I strictly want to own. I'll buy what I can buy and own it. I can't see any scenario where paying monthly rental fees can allow me to make a living doing this. In this area pay for Karaoke hosting is very low as it is. Most places pay between $100 and $150. Very few pay more than that. I'm sure some do, but not many. Some even want to find someone who will work for $75.
Bars and restaurants are getting squeezed too. Food costs are high and going up, rent, insurance, utilities, employee costs-not just labor cost and everything else has many bars and restaurants squeaking by or going out of business. So I can understand them wanting to try to keep costs down.

Stogie, You could TRY and call Greg Taylor (formerly of Chartbuster) at 865-312-7772 and see if he's got a few leftover drives...who knows? May be worth a shot.

Thanks Johnny, that's actually some good "thinking outside of the box" thinking. I'm waiting for my money to come through which should be within the next few days to a week and then we will see.
I'm toying with the idea of getting the SC Foundations and 5 bricks just so I can start out with some SC, but it's a chunk of change for not that many songs-around $1,200. I'm going to continue to watch craig's list and ebay to see what comes up. I just missed an ebay auction with over 500 discs for a little over a dollar a disc and it looked like a nice collection, but I hadn't made the decision to do this at the time so I didn't bid. Too bad.
