As a budding KJ, I'm not yet entirely jaded by the repeated listenings of Picture, Love Shack, Bohemian Rhapsody, Don't Stop Believing, Crazy, You Never Even Called Me By My Name, Brandy, Summer Nights, Friends In Low Places, etc., etc., etc........ Ultimately, as long as the patrons are having a good time; I am happy to be of service. With that said- I imagine we all have titles in our respective collections we wish would be more widely embraced. I am referring specifically to selections, while not necessarily huge hits, are well known enough to be enjoyed by the mass populous. (Hell, even the Roberta Flack version of Killing Me Softly, or ANY Neil Diamond beyond Sweet Caroline would be a welcome change from time-to-time.) So, just for fun- what are some of you guys' personal favorites/suggestions?

I want to hear more Alice In Chains! Soundgarden! Pearl Jam! Stone Temple Pilots! Funny out of the songs you mentioned as repeated, at our shows, Bohemian Rhapsody is the only real regular song that gets done often.

had a good one sang tonight....Pat Boone's "Speedy Gonzales"...last week "dead skunk in the middle of the road" and "Pink Shoelaces" were sung....but then again we do get many singers who challenge each other with off the wall songs...they hit me with "wildwood weed" about a month ago.

I am the only one in my area that does Alice in Chains.

I really got a kick at the last kid's show when amongst all the Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez a little boy kept putting in Green Day.

They need to make a karaoke version of "Heaven Beside You" (Alice in Chains). Other than that, I try to do some weird stuff, for fun... some Kate Bush or "Zombie" by The Cranberries. "Here's Where the Story Ends" by The Sundays. "Cosmic Love" by Florence & the Machine. Fun songs to sing (challenging) except people don't really want to hear them! I like the Neil Diamond challenge - cool what can happen when you discourage/encourage!

@Roxymusic: Quote Roxy "Fun songs to sing (challenging) except people don't really want to hear them!
When I sing, my main object is to entertain.....the audience! That way they keep coming back. I'd much rather sing to a room FULL of listeners than sing to a room with a few apathetics.

Karaoke Version has it as an accompaniment track and you can vote on it to be produced as a regular karaoke track. They have a number of Alice in Chains songs to vote for. http://www.karaoke-version.com/karaoke/ ... ins&page=1

Lonman- I'm with you on thinking it would be nice to hear more 90's rock. Interesting that Bohemian Rhapsody is the only tune from that list that gets sung with regularity at your shows. I am surprised at how geography and demographics really do play a big role in song preference.
I am based in Central North Carolina, and KJ at four different establishments that happen to draw a wide variety of folks. It does tend to keep things fun and interesting.

I want certain songs BANNED from karaoke, like American Pie, Hotel California, [Whatever] on the Dashboard and any man with a combover singing "My Way!"
I personally do a lot of really old Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, like "Three cigarettes in the ashtray," and "Johnny One time." Most people love them because either they've never heard them before or they're old enough to tell me they "haven't heard that song in decades!" I used to do Roberta's "Killing Me Softly," don't know why I stopped.

Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes.
I had never heard either done in karaoke before so I added them to my list.
I always get a good response from the crowd and one bartender always requests I do Chasing Cars when I'm at her bar.

I'm not a KJ,butthis is an interesting thread. I've done the Roberta Flack version before, but honestly, in public karaoke I try to do upbeat or fast songs because slow songs are boring to the audience. But for some reason, the folks who sing the other version- which is even MORE slow and boring, don't seem to get that. The occasional slow song, if done by a good singer, is OK, but unfortunately, most karaoke singers favor the long, slow ballads.

I'm a KJ and I don't care who sings what. I just like having 8-10 singers in my rotation. The only thing that annoys me is when somebody wants to sing an eight-minute song in the last 20 minutes. It takes away another customer's chance to sing. When I sing, I sing for my own enjoyment, not to entertain the "audience". When I have more than a couple singers, I don't sing unless I'm requested to. They're the ones paying me. I know a lot of KJs think it's all about them. I went into a bar/restaurant two months ago and the KJ sang a song and proceeded to keep singing songs. I finished my dinner and left. I won't be going back to that bar.

I just spent that last 6 weeks cleaning up my songs lists and books. With the deep inspection into what i have, I started making lists of songs I have never heard or rarely hear. I am either going to sing them myself or challenge others to do so with some sort of challenge contest. Maybe just post a lit of tracks and buy a beer for anyone that sings off that list.
