I don't bend at all on this because it's my job to make sure that EVERYONE has an enjoyable time... not just the singer. CHIP's BACK!!!!! Made my day and that ain't easy living in paradise! On topic....i have recently removed nearly ALL Eminem and Lil Wayne songs due to management requests at both venues. It seems the KIDS 21-30 year olds) have been belting them out recently for the sheer SHOCK VALUE of it and it's getting ridiculous! Everything else is fair game at both venues, as they are late shows and over 21 and in semi-dive bars anyways, .

I've seen a KJ get banned from working a particular bar in Florida for allowing someone to sing "Short Dick Man". At least a dozen people walked out before the song was over. The girl singing it and her husband were also told to not come back to the venue. This particular venue was a hotel outdoor Tiki Bar. Children were swimming in the pool less than 20 feet away and senior citizens were trying to enjoy their dinners.
YES!!!! I think it was VERY IMMATURE; JUVENILE EVEN, for someone to choose that song at that particular location. People should know the difference between class and classless.
If you think that is the behavior of a mature adult; then I'm sorry but it's too late to help you. Horns in, Bruce. Geez. If I was doing a show at a hotel with children, it wouldn't be an issue, because I wouldn't allow it to be played. But honestly, I don't give a rat's patootie in an adult bar if someone wants to sing it, and I wouldn't condemn them for it. I guess I'm just not as judgmental that way. Like you said, to each their own. Exactly!

I play anything and everything.
If your are white and drop an N Bomb that's not cool. The suggested substitution is brother.
Some shows we do ban songs my one show has no Picture, Before He Cheats or Killing Me Softly. Most other shows its just Picture.

I could see songs like Closer, or My Dick, but Picture?? What's wrong with Picture? What's wrong with Before He Cheats??

One of the places we go on Friday this one couple bought the stuff to run since the normal KJ had some "problems" that come up 5 weeks in a row and had no idea when he might be back. Did they buy all his stuff? No they bought all the stuff from "other" places. Onto topic thou - they sing several "remade" versions of songs including the x-rated version of Summer Lovin from Grease. They think it's funny and so do almost all the other patrons and the owners of the bar. There is also usually a girl that is under 18 that is the bar/resturant since her parents bring her so she can sing. I am the exception I think in that respect I do not find it amusing after the first time I heard it. They will also do that one or others sometimes at a different venue on Saturday and most people like it there too.

I don't care what "color", nationality, or ethnic origin anyone is. "Sing" it as written.

As a karaoke singer, there have definitely been times where I wouldn't have minded a show where "Picture" was banned. For a while, it was that song, every night, every show. Our little karaoke club, as it were, instituted a rule that if someone asks you to sing it with him or her, and you do, it better be in pursuit of, er... a goal. The repercussions of not... achieving said goal... is another night of karaoke where all your songs for the night are picked for you by the rest of the group. It's been done three times, all finishing pretty much the same way: "Hey, ___, how'd it go last night?" "Here are the slips. All I ask is you don't make me sing _____ again."

I have a regular female singer who can sing most anything from classic country, to sixties R&B, to new pop/rock ... and sing it very well, but every once in a while she wants to sing Connie Vanet's "Pussycat Song"... The first couple of times it was amusing... but now it's getting on my nerves... I'm about to drop it from the library.

I don’t ban songs; I’m not the karaoke police. That said R rated songs don’t get played until after 10pm. The place where I kj is a full bar family restaurant. Can’t let anyone sing Gold Digger, Kanye West “she ain’t messin’ with no broke n#####s I had to pay if you’re f###### with this girl”. That's exactly how it appeared on screen. That song slipped by me one time & the parents with 3 kids were looking at me like saying WTF. My regulars knows its fair game after 10pm. After 10, the restaurant is closed & the bar is in full swing. Kids or no kids they can sing any R rated songs they want. Reminds of one singer requested NiNails’ Closer. He was holding a fart machine. All the f*** words were substituted with a variety of fart sounds, went over great it was hilarious!

I'm also curious about the reasons behind these choices. Doing old school hip hop is pretty much what turned me into a karaoke regular.
Admittedly, the shows I tend to frequent are 21-49 demos, towards the rowdy side, and filled with people who would be dancing to that kind of stuff on a dj night. There are relatively few bars around, so the two of the larger bars tend to get everyone who wants to stay local for the night.

I do not censor my singers. If it's ok with the venue no children are present sing away. I don't have much rap in my books so it's not like I have very much downright vulgar songs anyway. But if someone wants to sing Creep or even Heartbreak warfare I am not going to stop them.

And pipes too! ! My dad smoked a pipe for years! Velvet. Tomorrow night I'm playing at the only bar in Iowa that allows smoking. Glad I don't take my PAs or sub anymore! Now my trailer doesn't smell like smoke. Anyway, back on track. In January of 2010, my wife and I were in a little irish pub just outside the entrance to Disney World. It was almost like me and this guy was battling, he'd do a rap song, I would do an old classic. He was black, short, wore a tight little stocking cap. He must have done 5 Eminem songs. Finally for shock value I got up and did (@$%!) Control. I didn't flinch an inch when singing every word, word for word. Even though there was 8 or 10 black people in the audience, they didn't let their panties get in a bunch cuz I dropped the N word! I read the crowd as it being ok and I was right. Sometimes as host a song comes up and the situation calls for us to ask the singer to bring the song rating down a notch. We count on them. I've never been let down yet but I'm sure some have. I'm talking about,,,, ok a kid party. Song comes up that has the s word in it, they know it, I know it, I don't know if the parents know it and I'm not ready to find out so I let the kid know to substitute for the bad words.
