thanks for the support everyone. I was mostly just trying to vent because I'm a little bitter about having to sell my equipment when someone less qaulified *in my opinion* is doing so well.

I will say this for him tho, he does have better equipment than I do. His laptop is connected to some kind of sound/dj interface and the subwoofer and speakers he uses sounds pretty darn decent to my ears, altho he runs a bit more bass than is to my personal tastes. Is JBL a good brand in general?

Someone asked me what everyone else was doing, and It was strictly karaoke.. I think PART of the reason he has success is he seems to attract the people who like the trivia and bar games. Hell even I got up to participate in the spoon toss. You take to spoons so that when you bang the round part it will flip the other spoon in the air.. The object of the game was to try and get the spoon in a plastic cup.

Btw just a slight clairification when I said several people have tried karaoke and failed I meant in the entire town at SERVERAL different locations.

The only show that has been successful is at this one bar located just outside the town limits. The host there is super personable, razor sharp efficient and he's been there for over 10 years. I have no doubts as to why his show is still successful.

I wouldn't sell the equipment. I would keep collecting music, and when i could, up grade the equipment, and keep trying to get into places. I wouldn't throw in the towel. Worse comes to worse you could do parties to get yourself out there and known. If Mr. Competition does parties, undercut the crap out of him, just to get exposure. See if you could find some local outdoor events, and DONATE time, once again, to get exposure. If you are good enough, and I am sure you are, you will get noticed.

That's not what you said in your rant.

the host would have 3 or 4 minutes of dead air while he was looking for a song. Sometimes he would be trying to cue a song, and then he would get distracted by another person handing in a slip and he would get into a conversation and forget about the person waiting to sing their song.

That doesn't sound very efficient to me.

no I'm talking about two separate people. Lyle works at a place called the Roadhouse in High River, AB. He is the super efficient one. He will take your slips and have your songs qued and in the system before you can sit down back in your chair.

Kj B whom I shall not name works at a different place and was the orginal host I was reffering to in my first post

Yes JBL is a good brand in general, however they also have entry level equipment & as with any equipment (good or bad) it can sound bad if a host doesn't know how to tune it in or the worst equipment sound decent if the host knows what they are doing.
Sometimes a club has to survive on stuff other than karaoke, as long as it's billed that way (my biggest peave as a singer), I can see a mediocore host surviving if the crowd is into it.
