Songs I will play but hate and try to discourage if possible..
Picture (most sane people are sick of this tune), Summer Nights (same as picture), Before he cheats (same as picture), Paradise by the dashboard light, Pretty much anything from Grease, Wannabe, Some Adele songs are quickly getting annoying (and seem to inspire sing offs between very drunk very delusional women). Anything over 7mins when there's a large rotation.
Songs I have flat out refused.. whether it be due to length, language and appropriateness for the venue or a combination..
At a medium pace, F*** you (because I was pretty sure the person wasn't going to use forget), Closer, War Pigs, Bat out of hell, Stairway to heaven (One of the worst karaoke choices ever imo).
Nicki Minaj - Stupid Hoe, Tyga - Rack City (not sure if either of these are out for karaoke yet but the will NEVER be played by me, original track included)

Wow, so many omissions. You really want to control your show and what people sing at it. You're kind of like a Karaoke dictator.

Those were all spread out, but at the same venue (all ages, and has an insane rotation on average) Had some issues with "adults" coming in the place and intentionally trying to find the worst possible songs (as far as profanity etc) when there were kids in the place. As far as the discouraging I wouldn't say anything unless asked for suggestions.. just a personal preference.

EH EH! Wrong answer. There are PLENTY of bars that will tell a band not to use any cursing. Our band played at several!! ESPECIALLY casino gigs, but there are plenty more that have the same requirement. Some bars don't even let their performers drink or smoke on stage.
Ok for the customers - sure, however I know several bars that also have 'cuss' jars, if you are caught cussing loud enough, you have to pay the jar.
If you are supposed to be a business, set a higher standard than the rest is the way I see it! Meaning if a bar or someone who hires you don't want it, you don't do it - bottom line. They pay you.

Yep. If a show NEEDS to have cussing to make it viable, have at it!

Washington must be quite the snobbish place. Around here, nobody cares, but this area is a bit Redneckish. People are more laid back.

My bar doesn't "ban" any songs. But I have a personal issue with songs that are nothing but curse words and don't get them. It's one thing to do a song that happens to have a word in it. It's quite another if the entire song is completely about F You.

Some people don't have a problem at all screaming out the "f-word" over a microphone.... but watch what happens when they get to the "n-word" if they are not of color.... they suddenly become their own censors....

i let the kids sing songs with bad words but i tell them they must self edit the music or they won't be able to sing again.

kids "teens" are really good about this. adults on the other hand especially when drinking are a different story......

thats when the "won't play that song" comes in. but i know my singers and they know me and they want to keep singing so they are pretty good about the self editing of songs.

and since i'm in an animal lodge right now, they pretty much know that foul language is a no no anyways.

I never allow "Jet Airliner"! Even the radio edit single is over the edge.

Just because you personally haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist in your area too. Most of the places around here probably don't care either way, I said we played at several bars - maybe 7 that had a restriction for bands that was in a 10 year span. And most ALL of the casino bars that hire bands have that restriction. The no drinking rule is actually a WA state liquor law for all establishments for anyone working which includes ALL performers (bands, karaoke, dj, etc), the casinos tend to enforce that more strict but there are some bars that do as well.

So now you're a SNOB if you want to go out and hear people sing songs without having to hear profanity thrown about like confetti? Just because a couple of people think it's just fine to make others feel uneasy, doesn't make it right or courteous. If you can't enjoy karaoke without using foul language; then maybe you are the one with the problem.

It's like hiring someone to paint your house white and you come home and it's BLUE.....and the painter says...."I'M THE PAINTER HERE AND I KNOW WHAT LOOKS BEST" DEAL WITH IT!

Glad I don't live out there. A law like that would piss me off. I don't get drunk when I work, but I do contribute to the bar and have a few drinks.

Yes, you ARE a snob if you can't handle some profanity. Personally, I don't trust anyone who doesn't curse, unless they are old folks. They were RAISED not to use profanity. In this day and age, if you DON'T use profanity there is something wrong with you. At my buddy's show, if and ONLY if the owner is there we stop all profanity. The owner happens to be a 75 year old lady from Germany. She's usually only there during the day, so it's not a problem. The manager doesn't care at night. It's not like everyone comes up to the mic to swear their faces off. As a matter of fact, the DJ music has MANY more swear words than the karaoke.

I contribute to the bar by buying food, and maybe on occasion some of our singers a couple drinks to show appreciation for their patronage.
Have you ever read the FL liquor laws thoroughly? It may be on the books, but most places don't think anything of it.

There is something wrong with that statement. If someone chooses not to use profanity/swear, there is absolutely nothing 'wrong' with them. That's pretty messed up to even say.

Our place doesn't serve food. I wish they did, though. Then the smoking would have to be done outside. Personally, I don't see a problem with having a couple of beers while running a show. It hurts no one, and it loosens the host up, a bit. I think getting trashed is wrong, and I have seen too many hosts do that. I am not worried about Florida liquor laws, and I don't think anyone else is. The only laws that I see being followed or enforced by the bars, are no underage drinking, and all drinking must cease at 2:30 am. I miss the 4:00 am days of NY.

Hosting is my job. No other job allows you to drink, why would being a kj be any different just because you work in a place that sells alcohol?

Really I can think of a job that allow you to drink on the job, if fact they require you to drink on the job.

A job in any brewery or winery where you are a test taster for liquor.

You do things your way, I will do them mine. You don't want to drink, don't drink. You don't want to use profanity, don't use profanity. Everyone is different. That's life.

SHOOT!!!!!!!!!! They created that language (or their ancestors did.. or their ancestor's ancestors did... or their ancestor's ancestor's ancestors did... or their ancestor's ancestor's ancestor's ancestors... etc...)

I think every child is/was raised NOT TO use profanity. I know that I was. But, that doesn't mean that I/we/they don't/didn't use it.

HUH???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Why?
Who says "You HAVE TO use profanity"?

I know that I occasionally like to sing a song that is either double-entente (like "The Pussycat Song") or has explicit language in it (like "Ode to my Car"), but they are both humorous songs. When I am in the mood to sing something like that, I will first screen out the audience, and then make my own judgement call on whether I feel I should 86 it or not. Sometimes I'll even sing "You Oughta Know," which drops the "F-Bomb" once, but that goes by so fast, most don't even notice. The most vulgar song that I will sing (on rare occasion) is "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" (not the Louis Prima/Kele Smith version)), AND, I will only do it when I KNOW the audience personally (and that I know they can handle it).

Side story to "The Pussycat Song"... I was at a place once where there was a table of 75+ year-olds there. It was the first time I had been to this place. One of the ladies came up to me, and asked if I would sing that song. I was shocked. I never would have thought to sing that song in front of an elderly crowd. Anyway, the woman who asked me, said that she remembered seeing/hearing me sing that song several years earlier at some other place I used to go to, and she said she couldn't stop laughing.
