Be careful. If the monitor was designed to be used with a serial port, the manufacturer may try to file a law suit against you for "cable shifting". Just because you buy something doesn't mean you can use it any way you want to these days.

I heard about that.... Serial Monitor LLC is investigating.

I didn't have the money to pick up on this steal. But i have found another used touchscreen monitor that I could afford, but it has a serial interface. Do desktops even come with serial ports anymore?

The don't have to.. You can get a USB to Serial adaptor. Just install a driver and you're all set. I have this on one of my kiosks that has no serial port.

so do i need to install the serial drivers or the usb drivers for the monitor after i install the driver for the cable?

If you have no physical serial port and you are using a touchscreen that is serial, then you will install the driver for the cable (which will create a serial port) and then the driver for the touchscreen (that will use that newly created port).

The driver is designed to emulate (look like) a serial port to your touchscreen and when you install the serial driver for it, you'll see that you will have a serial port (COM1) to use -- which is really the USB adapter cable.

I am considering getting a Touchscreen monitor for a Karaoke Kiost. My question is If I am running a wireless network How would this screen work in conjuction? I don't want to have to run a long Usb wire from my Laptop to the screen.

It's very simple. You get a wireless router. Set it by the rest of your equipment. You don't need an internet connection. Put the kiosk where ever you want. Nothing gets pluged into the router. I use a ELO touch screen and this little wireless PC (ASUS Eee Box EB1012P-B022E Nettop PC) both mounted on a stand about 60 feet from the router and all is well. No wires involved.

I use Compuhost & their Kiosk program needs to install the program on the veiwing computer or screen. The ELO doesn't have a hardrive. Also what connects the ELO screen to the router, if its not WiFi?
Thanks

The ELO Touchscreen is just a monitor, it's not a computer. As with any monitor, it must be connected to a computer which in turn provides the networking capabilities.
