If in sight, I watch the compuhost screen, a small yellow oval lets me know there is less than a minute left, red means 30 secs.

If I need to use the washroom or whatever, once I start a song and am confident of the mix, I will leave and note when my return needs to be back by.

That's a good idea (Color change somewhere on the graphics screen). I may add it to mine.

If I know the song (which is most of the time), I know when to start heading back up. If I don't know it well, I look at the length of the song. I will only step away for a moment. Bathroom songs are always over 4 1/2 minutes. I've never missed the ending. If the bathroom is taken, I'll try again on the next longer song.

Like Julie, most of the time I know the song, or most of the time can guage by how the music changes from singing to going to instrumental or repeating chorus's often - like many songs do at the end.

While I've only had to use it once, Compuhost also has an adjustable auto play feature. I told the next two singers (regulars) that I might be busy (potty break). If I wasn't back when the song in front of them ended, they had 10 seconds before their song started, so they'd better be ready to go. Let them know ahead of time and apologized for doing it, and everything went smooth (only needed one). Don't like using the feature but it can be a life saver if and when needed.

ROFL jr - I don’t know which one it refers to: depends as in depending on the situation, or depends as in the brand product for incontinence? (sorry, can’t resist)

My host software (WinAmp) has a bright, clear digital clock to show either time remaining or time elapsed for each & every song. I set it @ time remaining so I can determine how much time I have for bathroom breaks. Over 3min is good; no go on less than 2.5min remaining. Wait for the next over 3min song. :)

You actually use WinAmp?? It doesn't have any features but showing the lyrics. Is there a better karaoke plugin besides the standard one??

This.

A very handy feature of Compuhost.

I simply use the remaining time counter when the song is loaded. You have a pretty good idea of how long you're going to need, and you know exactly how much time you have based on the counter.

Of course, if you are standing at your computer.

But how do you know the time remaining from across the room? Does your program put the time remaining on the lyric/crowd monitors? (that's where the Compuhost "timing spot" is)

I don't use it for bathroom breaks, I wait till a song comes on that has enough time on it after I tweak the mix to go.

However, when mingling, easy to get sidetracked but always know I can look at the screen and find my oval visual that tells me to get back up. I've educated some of the singers that know to look for that so they can know when to come up without being paged.

no special tricks or anything.....

Sorry, Smooth, I should've said Winamp as a plug-in to my Sax&Dot Show Presenter. :)

I too like the rest of you pretty well go by the length of the song. However I usually tell people the only reason I leave the stage is because one, I know the singer and trust their mic technique or two, I can push and twist knobs all night long and it ain't gonna help!

Bazza.... I don't stand there staring at the counter... watching it count down.... Do you start a song on Compuhost from across the room?

(due to our common previous employment... I believe you and I have a better handle on "how long 1 minute is" without looking than the average bear.)
