Everybody has their own rules, beliefs, guidelines. I'm not opposed to cussing. As long as no kids are around and the crowd/ bar is the type that it isn't an issue. By the way I sang P*ssy Control Friday night and brought the house down (not applause, laughter). I held nothing back, one of my best friends who is black doesn't get offended. Again, know the crowd/venue.

OK I've scoured the internet looking for Lyrics for this song and I can not find one where they say the S word in it. Please tell me who's version you are referring to and in what stanza it is. The single edit of Miller's recording features a truncated version of the guitar intro. In addition, one line of the song's lyric was altered for radio play: instead of "'Cause I don't want to get caught up in any of that funky (@$%&#!) goin' down in the city", it was changed to "funky kicks goin' down in the city". The single edit was included on the original release of Greatest Hits 1974–78, although the full album version has been used for later reissues of the compilation. The radio version is the ones I have for karaoke (SC & Backstage) anyway with the 'funky kicks' line. Not that it matters, the song has NEVER been sung as long as I can remember. The BS and other versions may use the album lyrics, I don't know. Exactly right. The radio edit song is 3:36. Album version is 4:32. Many rock stations in the late seventies and beyond had no problem playing the "unrated" version. Book of Dreams is one of my fave albums of all time! But i'm still unclear as to why you have a problem with this song for karaoke, I have three versions, none of them say s**t. Is it because it's shorter?

I used to be a free speech absolutist. I've been thinking a lot about what Lonnie has told us about his experiences and it's starting to make a lot of sense to me due to some other information I've been getting.
I enjoy watching the Bar Rescue show on Spike and it seems like the bar business is all about getting women into the bar. So if something might offend women or make them feel anything less than comfortable, isn't it kind of cutting our own throats to play a potentially offensive song it if we want the bar to be profitable and thus ensure that the bar wants to keep us there playing?
Just something I've been thinking about-- you guys all know a lot more than I do at this point, so I'm interested in hearing what you all think about this approach...
Of course then I also have questions about songs like say Meredith Brook's "(@$%!)" -- a lot of women like to sing it, so maybe it's ok if a woman uses the word, but maybe not ok if Eminem or some other rapper sings a song that refers to a woman as "(@$%!)"? What if "(@$%!)" has some sort of gay anthem implication such as Elton John's "The (@$%!) Is Back"? Then would it be ok in that setting?
And what about songs such as Alanis Morissette's "You Oughtta Know"? Has the "F Bomb" but is this song offensive to women? I'm still trying to figure it all out...

Um....yeah, that's kind of a gimme for a Karaoke Host, bartender, whatever.. Get guys in and that's all you get. Get females in, and the guys follow.... Kind of a priority rule since the invention of the very first co-ed public house.....

Are there only certain profanities you allow or is it anything goes after 11 PM? Do you distinguish between whether a woman or man is using a word e.g. the "B" word? Or is it all the same?

I'll refuse to play songs that I know have foul language if I'm at a kid's show, but otherwise, anything is fair game. Though, I will sometimes try to talk someone out of a song if I feel it's a real mood killer or just generally inappropriate for the crowd. But, if it ain't a kid's show, ultimately, the customer sings whatever they want.

I let them sing whatever they want. 21-50 year olds. All grown people. If they want to make a fool of themselves and curse, let 'em! They're just trying to have fun and/or get attention! disclaimer- my shows are late night and no children are ever allowed. IF they were early evening shows, it'd be different, or IF the owner cared, but she doesn't. SHE even curses while singing sometimes, but nothing over-the-top.

The one thing that I refuse to play is...... the game where a singer brings his friends that don't want to sing but they are in the rotation all night long so their friend gets an extra turn by singing a duet with them. Singer A, and we all know what the "A" stands for, always sings first and it is ALWAYS a solo. Singer B NEVER sings a solo and NEVER sings a song WITHOUT singer A. Singer C, is just like singer B. You can barely hear singer B or singer C whenever they are up on stage with singer A. It is obvious that singers B & C are simply shills for singer A. If this were to happen at your show or at a show that you frequent; would you do anything about it or say anything about it to the KJ? Would it bug you at all that Singer A sang 3 songs in every rotation while you only got to sing once?

I used to have a group that would come in. Maybe four to five people. Each person would turn in a song under their name but all five would come to the stage. They got me two different times trying this. Each time i would call the second person and all of them would come up. I would then group all the names together and only call one of the names per rotation. Of course they stopped coming when I was on to them from the get go a time or two later. They would come up and ask when I was going to que their song and I simply told them that groups can only sing once a rotation. You've already sang this round. I can que your's for you next time but you won't be able to sing with the group on another song. i would get a, "it's my song but i don't want to sing alone deal". I would say something like, then I should que your song next for the group? They would get huffy and leave.
I later changed things so that a singer could sing twice in a rotation. Once by themselves and once to help out another singer. I don't know how I would have handled this group if they had come in at that point. I would probably call it a group and let them sing once per...

I've posted my approach before, but I like it and I'll do it again. My rules state "One Free Duet". You can be on the stage two times in a rotation, but only one time per night. After that, if you are in a song be it in a group or by yourself, you have used up your turn.

Once I had a large group of nurses from a local hospital. I swear, at least twelve, and they all came up on a pretty small stage to sing. I litterally had boobs poking me in three sides of my head, and neck, as butts squished my torso like a contourtionist. Between the pressure and perfume, I could hardly catch a breath. When they finished the song, I quickly got on the mic, and was able be to convince them to stay put, and sing a few more songs....

Oh the sacrifices we must make.. Oh well, the show must go on.
As far as what I refuse to play.... I had a new singer ask if he could do "The Rodeo Song" last Saturday evening... When I told him I didn't allow it at this venue, he simply said "OK, then how about Somethin' 'Bout A Truck?" No problem at all.
