Vince Prince wrote: How many here get people that come up to you and ask questions about your setups because they want to be a KJ? It happens to me all the time. This happened recently. After told him my song library alone cost over $60k the look of disbelief & bewilderment follows. “Really?? Why so much? This other kj said it only cost him $10k for complete pa system, with laptop of 100k songs”. Well wtf, obviously he’s a pirate host, an overnight illegal kj. I chose to operate legally & play by the rules. And to this day I’m still spending money for songs & system upgrade. If you want to go that route, go ahead. Be sure to set aside more $$ because you’ll need it when you get sued in criminal court by karaoke manufacturers. You can tell that same thing I told you to that other kj. (no mean to turn it into legalities, just describing what actually transpired).

I certainly don't have not invested what Brian A has invested, but mostly because I am only 3 years in and bought 99% of my karaoke music via Craigslist or eBay.
But I have had the OP's question come up and I have estimated that replicating one of my rigs would cost about $20k including all of the music. Could certainly bring the cost way down by being more selective with the music, but I like having the variety and it works in my area.
Like most of the other posters, the look of astonishment is priceless.
Interestingly, when haggling recently with a bar owner about the price of a gig, I explained to him the cost of the music. His reply, "Why don't you just download it like everyone else?".
The mentality of "free" that the Internet has given to people, and in particular the Gen X, Gen Y, and upcoming Tweeners is something that has and will forever change how certain industries distribute and sell their IP.

Lonman wrote: I understood what he meant. I get that question on occasion, asking what it would cost to duplicate what I have - they always look shocked, but I explaing to them 'good' sound actually costs money. You can shortcut stuff and get sound, whether it will be good or not is debateable. I don't know how many times i've had kj's invite me to their show because they tell me their sound is 'top notch' or 'sounds great' only to get there & have it ear piercing loud and distortion, lack of bass. Too much effect or none at all. It's like watching Kitchen Nightmares - the chefs all claim their food is a 9 or 10 but when it actually gets sampled, it's more like a 1 or 2. They need a Gordon Ramsey of the karaoke world. Thankfully, I know what music is supposed to sound like, and I am very good with an equalizer. My system has reasonable bass, (will be better when I can afford a sub, but is pretty good for a pair of 15's), no distortion even when cranked, (especially since my speakers are matched to my board), and I don't over-use my effects, (although I do like to play with the voice changer.....heheheeeee). Does it sound like a $10,000 system? No. I won't pretend that it does. But I can tell you that it sounds better than most of the systems I have heard around my area. That said, I have every intention of upgrading stuff, as I can. BTW, since I fixed my speakers, I have had NO clipping problems, whatsoever.

Song library of $60k invested over 20 yrs is actually a conservative estimate. I'm like Lonnie & others who started 20 years ago with Pioneer Lasers @ $150 a pop, SC @ $32, then along with others @ $25. Of course, prices went down as a lot jumped the bandwagon to be kj's, but mostly dj’s. Oh how I wish we started in an era of laptops, hardrives & downloads, our hosting years back then would’ve been much easier.

Brian, not to mention backs with the advent of much lighter, better sounding speakers. Yup, the number one problem is that people think we get our music for free or we should. Gotta love that "you buy music and don't download it for free? I wonder if anyone asks anybody else they do business if they get their equipment and tools for free.

I was a mobile dj/kj back then using Cerwin Vega Sub model 36B?? can’t remember the exact model but it was dubbed “junior earthquake” weighing 130lbs, JBL concert series tops at 100lbs. I was young then, can’t do that anymore.

excuse me i met my now current wife at karaoke!!! and i'm thanking the host for that.. oh wait i was the host.... I did not say they wouldn't be certain exceptions to the rules, I was talking about in general MightyWiz. You did not abuse rule number 4 you managed to work it into a long term permanent relationship, and I am happy for you. What I was talking about was the misuse of the show and trying to date a different woman every show. The worse case scenario would be hitting on others that are currently with others. This will cause nothing but problems for the host and the venue he or she works for. I hope this clears things up. Have a nice day.

Honestly, this hasn't happened to me yet. However,,,,I've been on the other end. Once I caught the karaoke bug, I started asking the hosts where I would sing, all those typical questions. I remember them telling me they had about ten grand in their system. I think back now, they were full of baloney! They had vocopro mics, peavy pa's that were cracking and vibrating, no sub and last but not least, they bragged about how they got their library of songs and how they kept it up to date. I remember they had roxbox for their software. I bet they didn't have 4 grand in their "system".
I wasn't surprised when they told me what they had in it, I just used it to learn (and hooked up here months later where I really learned the trade) because I knew I was going to get in the business. But I could see how people would freak out, after all, you can buy an ipod for a few extra bucks. How much more could a mic and speakers cost?

Let's See.... Shure Super 55 - $200 - $249 VocoPro Wireless Mics + Receiver - $350 A&H ZED12FX - $425 2x EVELX115P - $1100 2x EVELX118P - $1300 Speaker Covers - $200 Stellar CAP - $3800 SC Cert - $125 SC Discs - $2000-$3000 CB 12000+ Drive - ~$3000 Cabling - $200-$300 Lights/Fog/Cabling - $1500-$2000 Books - $300 Odyssey Case to put it all in - $450 Laptop - $300 - $500 Mic Stands, props, Misc stuff - $300-500 So about $15000 Minimum for a rig. And I am not even using an EQ, or a compressor, or a BBE or some of the other goodies that many KJ's use. Like I said before, the cost of the music could be trimmed significantly by trimming the selection, but I am not going to compromise there. For the folks that have been around a while and paid top dollar for new discs, disc players, other goodies that cost a lot more when they first came out, I consider what I have invested to be cheap. Take the above and multiple time 4 and that is where I will be in a few months. Karaoke is not for the faint of heart.... -Chris
