After each rotation I now play two songs as filler before starting again so people can go out and smoke.

I like to use the vocal tracks on multiplex discs so the shyer "chair singers" can sing along from the bar monitors and hopefully gain enough confidence to give the mic a shot.

Some, like Medacy's Karaoke Party discs can be played in mixed mono. Some, like Chartbuster, must be played in right side mono. I never have any problem with any brands, except.......

Then there is SC. I had a request to play Dominick The Donkey ( who added the "K"?) which I have on a Star Series SC2418 ( in case you're wondering, I've never found it on another brand..).

Tried mixed mono, right side, left side, and stereo. It would seem they completely separated vocals and music by side, left or right mono blanks one or the other, mixed mono makes everything sound like crap, and stereo sounds like I described, with vocals from one speaker and music from another.

I had the same result on 3 different systems. Here's what's even stranger. If I play it on a VocoPro Duet all-in-one it sounds........kind of OK, yet this would be mixed mono.

Note: This is NOT an SC knock- I am simply trying to figure out what I can do to make it work.

Any help or information greatly appreciated- no debates please, just maybe an answer?

If they recorded it with the tracks panned that way, there's not really a mixing trick to get the summed audio coming out of both speakers. The old Mackie 1604 mixers had some crazy cool routing options that could have summed everything together out of the group outs, but I don't know of any current small format mixers that have those kind of flexible routing options.

I've noticed this kind of tracking as well, and it always bothered me on my monitor speaker, which is used to run out of one side of the booth out. I ended up just getting an XLR Y cable to sum the mono send into my monitor.

If you really wanted to and your mixer accomodates it, you could run your system in mono, run one side out of the main outs with one of these XLR Y cables, then run your other side out of the booth out or AUX sends with another XLR Y cable. That would sum both channels on both sides and, coincidentally, give you independent volume control over each speaker (for whatever that's worth).

That is very strange. My GEM copy of that song is not a multiplex version. Just a straight ahead karaoke instrumental with typical background vocals and "hee haws" in both channels. No mulitplexed lead singer.

Are you sure there isn't a component in your system somewhere that is out of phase?

Just curious. Why does the entire bar need a break to go smoke? Can't they go smoke anytime they like while others are singing?

Any mixer that has subgroups should be able to sum the channels the way you want.

Hmmm, probably ok to do if it’s not too busy, otherwise, that could equal to 6 or eight more singers added before closing. but that's just my way of thinking, no offense intended. :)

Bars around here just have the rotation list available for people to see so the people know if they have time to go smoke without stopping the show for those who want to.

I have the rotation list on screen tv - six singers at a time, just scroll one after another. If they see their name below, they have approx 25min for bathroom/smoke break.

Silly question, why don't you just play some regular music, if you are going to have music breaks? It's easy enough to make some mixed CDs. A friend of mine does that. She takes a 10 minute break halfway through her show, and just throws on a mixed music CD.

Your Gem version is probably the one from SC8780 which is a Spotlight Series, and not multiplex. The Star Series are 8+8s, half performance tracks, half with vocals.

Normally, I have other go-to discs, but again- I can only find D the D on SC, and it's highly requested.

SMOOTH: In answer to your question, from my OP:

"I like to use the vocal tracks on multiplex discs so the shyer "chair singers" can sing along from the bar monitors and hopefully gain enough confidence to give the mic a shot....."

JCLAYDON: I can sum my channels any way I wish, hence my OP:

"Tried mixed mono, right side, left side, and stereo. It would seem they completely separated vocals and music by side, left or right mono blanks one or the other, mixed mono makes everything sound like crap, and stereo sounds like I described, with vocals from one speaker and music from another.

TOPHER M: Thank you! Your suggestion works! The only thing is, I don't know if it's worth it for the one song. Either way, now I know how it can be done- thanks again!

Yup, as far as smoking, they can come and go as they please. Many would simply rather not miss anything during performances..... This is at the customers' request, not my idea...

Thank you all for your input- this is what a forum is all about!

send the vocal channel to subgroup one, send the music to subgroup two. Sum both channels and then send them back to your mains.

Problem solved

Geez, that works too- and I don't know why I didn't think of it first  Can I claim extreme middle age? Thanks! I still wish I could figure out why it won't work in simple mixed mono though. Weird....

But thanks again :D
